68 new paid members in one week: how PrintyJay built up to it all year
Maybe you've been posting for a while and giving your community plenty for free. But you're still not sure when to actually ask them to join as paid members, or whether your free work is doing anything to build toward that.
Kasia Grabowska, known on Patreon as PrintyJay, does the opposite of what you might expect: most of the year, she doesn't ask for paid members at all. Then, for short stretches, she asks clearly and directly.
Meet PrintyJay
Kasia designs collectible 3D-printed models: terrariums, aquariums, and ongoing series like Tiny Jungle and Tiny Farm. She left her day job in December, once her Patreon page made it possible to do this full time.
How did she get to this kind of paid membership growth? Through a rhythm: give generously for most of the year, then ask clearly and briefly, twice. This takes the pressure off of needing to see results constantly, and helps put focus on the right times for converting fans.
Build for months, convert for a weekend
Kasia splits her year into two modes. For about five-month periods, she's building: sharing models on MakerWorld (a free 3D-printing platform), posting regularly, and growing her free Patreon audience. For a couple of short windows, timed to her Patreon anniversary and Black Friday, she actively pushes people to upgrade or join as paid members.
Paid membership is always open, and some people join on their own between those two pushes. But the two planned moments are when she deliberately asks.
"Trust is built at the free layer," Kasia says. Everything starts on MakerWorld, where her models are free to everyone. Every one is tested and photographed rather than just rendered. She once spent a month building and photographing an orbital vending machine model to prove her mechanisms actually work. Every post on MakerWorld points back to her Patreon page for people who want more, or who want a license to sell prints commercially.
What free members get
On PrintyJay's page, free membership isn't a waiting room. It comes with:
A genuinely new exclusive model every month, clearly tagged so it's easy to find
An unblurred page, so visitors can see exactly what they'd be joining before they commit
Collections and a welcome pack that orient new visitors and cut down on repeat questions
One piece of a bigger series, free, with a note that paid members get the full set
"Someone who can't pay today may be ready in six months," Kasia says. "And when they are, they're already inside my world."
She treats free members as people who might join later, not a lesser tier, and delights them without expecting anything back.
Anatomy of her Starter Pack push
At the end of May, Kasia ran her Starter Pack promotion, one of her two planned pushes for the year. It had a simple, repeatable shape:
A real deadline. The offer was open for a short, specific window, not "for a limited time."
Exactly two emails: one introducing the offer, one final reminder before it closed.
Real photography of the actual models people would get, not renders.
One audience. She only promoted to her existing Patreon members, since her free tier had already warmed them up to join.
The result: 68 paid signups in one week, more than double her usual pace. Most of those members came up through free membership first, rather than joining as paid from a cold start.
Why the ask works
A short, once-in-a-while push only works because of what happens before it. Kasia's offering is consistent, so members know what to expect. Her page is clear, so no one is confused about what they're getting. And she doesn't expect conversion to paid all the time. She understands it's about building value slowly, then making the ask when it matters.
And by the time she asks, people have already felt the value for free, so they're ready to commit instead of still deciding.
Try this next
You don't need to overhaul your whole page to borrow from Kasia's approach. Start small:
Pick one thing to give away consistently. It doesn't need to be everything you make for free, just one thing on a rhythm your community can count on.
Put your next ask on the calendar. Choose one moment in the next few months, a milestone or a season, and commit to a real deadline for it.
Look at your page through a new member's eyes. Would they know what they're getting before they join? If not, that's the smallest fix to make first.

Ok got it 👍
I think the most difficult thing for me is, I have no idea what my people want. I'll try this though. Give them a something really good for free each month.
If you haven't tried polls yet, they could help with the not knowing. You can ask fans directly what they'd like more of, and the answers can shape what you make next. Here's how they work: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028159232-How-to-poll-your-fans
Thanks for sharing
I really like the idea of having only one or two annual membership pushes! 🖤 It makes signing up seem more noticeable to followers than if the creator is constantly asking. Signing up can be promoted like an event... 🤔 Useful idea! 🫶
NICE COME UP !! Keep it up
Love this example of a thriving STL focused Creator. Such a strong free to paid member support system. Are download limits coming to Patreon? e.g. Members could download X number of STL files per month (from the full library) as paying members. I believe this would help members choose what they want and let digital creators list all of their designs knowing someone won't download all of them (=thousands of hours of work) in one month.
Hey there, we don't have anything to share at this time in regards to download limits, but we would love if you shared this feedback here: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413425955213-Submit-a-feature-request-or-feedback
The “build, then ask” part is so real !!! I started my Patreon with no existing audience and learned pretty quickly that people don’t need more content. They need a reason to become curious about the world you’re building. I stopped trying to sell individual posts and started building an ecosystem people wanted to enter. ❤️🔥
I’d love to see more practical education on how creators can turn digital products and creative skills into consistent income. In particular: • How to research what audiences actually want before creating a product • How to validate and test product ideas before investing time in them • How to package and price digital products effectively • How to improve discoverability and attract new customers • How to use AI to speed up research, design, and content creation without sacrificing quality • Real case studies showing the journey from an idea to a successful digital product Most importantly, I’d like practical, step-by-step strategies that creators can actually implement, rather than general advice.
Can you please increase Quip video lengths to 5mins??? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks so much for your suggestion! The best way to share feedback is by submitting a feature request so the right team can see it. Here's the link: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=28810449009677
Thank you ❤️🙏🏻
As a NSFW creator I can’t make content available to free members. Is there any other way to reach free members?
yes you can, just censor it in your own way
loved this!
I started my Patreon a few months ago. I use paid subscriptions for my snail mail club. I wasn’t planning to make my content paid - maybe someday in the future. For now, I want to share my content for free and hopefully attract new people to my (still very small) mail club.) And yes, I completely agree that someone who can’t afford a subscription today might be able to support you a year from now! I wish all of us new subscribers, more financial opportunities, and, most importantly, lots of inspiration! 💛🫂
What a neat approach! Thanks for sharing.
I LOVE this, and I fully agree. I started a 90 day challenge and I've been posting everyday at 8am for 42 days straight, 43 today, and I see the free people trickle in, but more importantly, people who aren't even signed up will engage and book consults and other services, so it really works!
Interesting approach 😉
I do something similar but not with the same result yet. 😄 I create educational content so my campaigns run in January and in September.
I write haikus for my free members. Which I like cus it gives me a push to write poetry and some times people respond and it makesme smile
I really like this take on value. It’s how I think of intention and energy. Keep at it smaller creators, we got this!
I’ve been consistent for months, offering a minimum of 4 models to my Patreon per subscription, and even some free models for free subscribers. I’ve promoted myself on MakerWorld, uploaded base models and the “premium” ones on my Patreon, and I’ve paid for advertising on Instagram with Reels about my Patreon account. And still, my account has been stuck for months. So I’ve decided to stop. It’s great that some techniques work for other people, but in my case, absolutely nothing I’ve tried has worked.
Unfortunately the economy is horrible for the middle class right now (which were the biggest spenders on entertainment & subscriptions). This combined with the oversaturation of AI slop & ads on the internet has caused many spenders to stop altogether. Consequently, most creators' growth has stagnated.
Thanks for this example, so will consider how I can personally offer all my free members the opportunity to upgrade through email, as had previously thought the automated emails sent out on my behalf would have been enough.
Reading and learning, thanks :)
