Andrew 100% right. Curly fries are french fries. Crinkle cut fries are french fries. Straight-cut fries are french fries. Waffle-cut fries are french fries.
That being said, I still think "french fry" is a legit pick.
Andrew getting so heated over French fry was genuinely baffling to me but then Eric choosing an entire ass type of potato when to that point everything had been potato dishes? Also insane. Geoff had 3 of my favorite ways to eat potatoes though so he wins.
The Picks Per Minute (PPM) usually slows in the middle of the first round because that’s when they make the rules
I’m late on this and seem to be in the minority but Andrew is mostly right on the French Fry and Sweet potato, it’s crazy they’re saying you can draft French fry and then curly fry etc, and I don’t usually agree with him on most things. French fry is the broad category; shoestring, curly, steak etc are all types of French fries. If it’s all French fries it should’ve been the undisputed #1 pick
And it should’ve had to be baked sweet potato or whatever prep
Gavin letting the UK down here. No chippy chips? In the words of Eric, GET REAL
And no goose fat roast potato?!
As an Irishman im traumatised
In order - Geoff, Nick, Andrew, Gavin, Eric. Why would somebody's opinion of another persons pick/picks invalidate or disqualify their own picks..?
This became potato not potato draft half way through.
This got heated so fucking fast. I didn't stop laughing for 20 minutes
Eric's choice was like drafting a pineapple in an apple draft
I've been a fry cook a long time. Worked with every "fFrench Fried" potato known to man. Congrats I paid to hate you.
in response to gavins question, omelette is the escalator of food. when you botch it it becomes scrambled eggs
This might be the most demonstrably wrong andrew has ever been in his career. I love you buddy, but the french fry argument as completely unhinged.
So nobody said Roast Potatoes? Not even Gavin? Also, Andrew is so far wrong with the French Fry discussion.
I sorta get Andrew on fries in that just saying fries would invalidate every type of fry including curly, crinkle, etc but that argument does not equate to different flavors of potato chips. But regardless this whole thing went off the rails
Andrew was correct at first. Eric’s take is like if you were drafting hot drinks and chose “tea” does it disqualify all teas? You need to specify the type. If it’s possible to have a French fry draft “French fry” is too broad a pick.
So annoying when Andrew sets Ricky off early, so he just ruins the whole draft talking over everyone else and shouting how much he agrees with Geoff… can we send this guy to improv classes or something? It’s like every other draft at this point…
I have never seen Andrew so wrong and that's saying something lol
Amendment: However, completely correct about sweet potato. Entirely different family of vegetable.
Po-tay-toes!
This is the funniest piece of content that regulation has ever put out😂
Andrew like….didnt understand this draft at all. I can’t wait for them to argue over this again in a normal vid. How do they do so many drafts but not know how to do it 🤣🤣 I love this pod
Is Andrew always this bad at drafts?
Highest high draft and lowest low draft lol best 10/10 experience vs worst
This is absolutely a goated supp and Geoff takes this one handedly. Andrew is absolutely insane
Man, Andrew was... unhinged is the best word I've seen. I feel like y'all need to have a discussion about how broad or specific a pick can be. The way I look at these drafts, everyone is allowed to present their picks however they want. Imagine everyone in this draft is a chef. Geoff gives you 4 very specific dishes, prepared lovingly, and delicious. Eric presents you with a plain, unbaked sweet potato and says "imagine all the things you could do with this." Equally valid, just different ways to present their boards. More specific picks give more points (figurative points) if the voter likes them, but gives less points if the voter doesn't like that specific thing. Broader picks have more general appeal, but are less likely to be home run picks. Case in point, Eric has an overall solid board of broad picks, but Geoff's picks are clearly picked with so much love and care that I have to give it Geoff.
I agree with Andrew …mashed potatoes are bland
this is the greatest draft ever. of all time
Not only are tots a type of fry but It also has many different shapes like fries that ruins his argument against Gavin choosing French fries
Is Andrew’s fry omission real? Or just a byproduct of building your board and never assuming you get the 1.01?
What am I talking about, why am I trying to give this man the benefit of the doubt from the jump
Initially I thought Andrew was 100% correct, but I no longer understand what he's arguaing. In my world, McDonalds fries ARE shoestring fries, aren't they?? They're the same thing, there is literally no difference... Also French Fry = Shoestring Fry They are also the same damn thing. There are no variations of french fry, there are no variations of shoestring fry. EDIT: Watched more of the epsiode. Eric shouldn't be allowed sweet potato. It's literally a different vegetable to a regular potato.
Naw shoestring fries are suuuuper skinny, like round shoe laces.
Completely on Andrew's side. The common French fry everyone thinks of is called standard-cut. If you're going to pick curly fry, it makes sense to pick standard-cut fry, because French fry is the genre. I would have put it on the board as "(standard-cut) French fries". Each pick should describe the end-product of the prepping of a potato, before any non-essential ingredients are added so that you're not picking stuff like "baked potato with bacon crumbs" and "baked potato with cheese". So different flavors of potato chips aren't eligible but also each different cut of French fry is a different pick.
I’m with ya. Your ruling also means Eric needs to pick a preparation of sweet potato which I 100% agree with. Unprepared sweet potato just ain’t in the spirit.
Can't imagine the top potato not being baked. They argued over tots vs mashed but a baked potato is so essential. It's an unprepared potato, just baked. Wrap it in foil and throw it in some warm embers, you've got dinner. It's the regulation potato meal. In this essay...
Huh Andrew really loves to try to dunk on everyone and argue with zero substance or logic behind it
Geoff won this poll by starting off with mashed potato. French fries HAVE to be at the top because it's a safe pick but that doesn't mean it's the best form of potato. It's just commonly seen everywhere including the frozen aisle of a grocery store. So when people say they're making "french fries for dinner," they mean they're just dumping a branded Ore-ida bag of frozen fries into an air fryer and walking away for 10 minutes rather than making it from scratch. Same logic with the potato chip. Neither of those would be in my top draft picks because there's far better ways to enjoy a potato: you just have to apply the effort to cooking it yourself. Even the twice baked potato is superior to french fries and potato chips.
HISTORICALLY french fry has referred to deep frying- so around the 1850s if you referred to something as a “French fry”, it was deep fried (often precooked/blanched then completely submerging the food in oil/lard); you can french fry an onion or chicken. French fry is kind of a colloquialism for deep fried julienned russet potatoes. So I would say Gavin’s pick of French Fries is specific and valid. The issue is whether y’all would consider french fries a colloquialism or not which I think is the case.
Had to become a comment leaver to say that over the last 3 or 4 drafts, Andrew has had absolute garbage takes. No scrumping was fine, french fries is fine. Andrew has lost draft credability.
literally anyone won this except for andrew so insanely confidently wrong, it was genuinely hard for me to listen to compared to the normal stuff
Andrew was wrong the entire time
Okay Andrew is actually right about the sweet potato pick but everything else he’s wrong
This is fucking insane content. You just knew it was going to be contentious but not like what it was.
mr otatoe would have been really good
Tater tots are vastly better than most fries. But Andrew then buried himself with his insane arguing about other fries. Gavin and Eric are totally right about French fries being a specific thing
I come not to praise Andrew but to bury Eric. Gavin's pick was perfectly valid, but Andrew did have a point that the cut of french fry should be narrowed down, because the differences between them are significant. Eric's refusal to at least consider rewording the type of fry or adding a parenthetical remark to the draft board once they settled on julienne/McDonald's-style french fries is the only foul play during the argument. All that said... fries are a bad pick anyway; Geoff won this one handily.
The utter disrespect in the lack of the roast potato
Mashed potatoes for the win, number one on the board
Absolutely. Mashed potatoes are defs my #1. Geoff has perfect potato taste.
I'm actually on Andrew's side...
its okay to be wrong
So concerning how often I am 100 percent on Eric's side
Andrew just says shit and then hopes it'll make sense after
When he said he crosses by the group scooby-doo door style I better understood his vibe but I'm still baffled by what he says
Eric had a decent board till he went and picked Sweet Potato. Not only is it not a potato he tried to pick all preparations of sweet potato. They are totally right if someone picks russet then nobody would be allowed to pick any of their other picks, like baked potato’s, French fries, tator tots.
Sweet Potato is NOT a potato because they both, sweet and regular potato, come from different plant families
Correct, but it's certainly more potato than "couch" or "shitty tech," right? The problem I have with the pick is it is indeed to broad a category. If he had just taken "sweet potato fries," there would have been no controversy, and it still would have pretty much captured 90% of the value of sweet potatoes as a whole.
I was on Eric’s side until sweet potato holy shit
So I googled different types of cut fries guess what came up tater tot, tater tots are a certain cut of Fries so in that case Andrew's peck of tater tots would not count
for the poll for the winner, can one option be, Not Andrew, he absolutely lost the plot on this one
Nobody said PotaDOS (GLaDOS when she's in a potato) and I'm so angry about that
Goeff had the best picks this time.
Geoff's list all the way. Best picks.
Geoff won by a country mile
Andrew has never been so wrong. If I ordered ‘fries’ at a restaurant and they gave me waffle or curly fries, I’d assume they ran out of french fries
But what kind of “fries” are you expecting? Thin? The crispy kind at bars? The crappy air filled yellow ones?
eating hashbrown rn hope someone picks it
geoff got my vote
By the end of this Geoff is the only one to actually do the draft like a normal human
I've never been angry about a draft until now. French fry refers to the cut just like Julian is a different cut. Sweet potato is not even in the same plant family as a regular potato. So in my mind Eric and Andrew are both disqualified. Eric for his pic of sweet potato and Andrew for the insane argument against french fry. That said couch potato and shitty tech are pretty damn funny.
I googled “tater tots Vancouver Island” and 10 restaurants appeared lol
Andrew was so off the rails with his takes that nobody even clocked him REPEATEDLY saying tots are a type of french fry
Absolutely cooked
I guess Andrew doesn’t season or add flavoring to his tater tots. Didn’t he also complain about the preparation of his example tater tots? The French in French fry comes from the way they are cut and cooked.
and the cut, 'Julienne' is also a french word! So it is still a french cut potato
This is exemplary content
Andrew and Nick are so right it hurts, Eric and Gavin are being insane! The coffee thing is the exact thing!! Andrew said it best with the offensive line comment😂😂😂😂😂 Edit: He may be wrong about the flavor part though
Spoilers but Nick even goes back on being wrong with Andrew later. Because he is SO wrong
Andrew's take is insane. Gavin's and Eric's picks make complete sense.
Andrew missed out on the true Canadian tot. Mexi Fries from TacoTime. And don’t sleep on a tater tot poutine. Fuuuuck, so good.
They handed gavin the poll win. They handed it to him ROUND. 1.
