Gleb kept everything he had on Valery a secret. He loved him and, for some reason, genuinely believed that Valery was still a vulnerable, gentle man trapped in a cruel world, a man who needed Gleb more than anyone else. That illusion lasted until Gleb accidentally discovered that Valery had been using him as nothing more than a courier the entire time.
By then, about six months had passed since the Academik death. Valery had maintained close contact with the Academik family and, on his own from inside prison, rebuilt the supply network while avoiding direct contact with couriers. Instead of relying on individually recruited prison employees to smuggle contraband inside, entire cargo trucks operated by transportation companies and long-haul drivers became the couriers. The operation had expanded far beyond the prison system. It was more successful and larger than it had ever been under the Academik 's leadership.
There were only a couple of months left before Valery's sentence was due to end. Outside prison, everything was already being prepared for his release. That was when Gleb finally confronted him, telling him that he knew everything, and that he had proof. Proof of the drugs being smuggled into the prison, proof of the Academik 's murder, and proof in the form of the video recordings.

I cannot put into word just how much I love Valery's story. The characters are all so interesting to me, and Valery's magnificently written bad guy (villain? Big evil?) I'm excited to know more and mord abt his lore 🙏
