The Cameras
During the hurricane, some of the prison's surveillance cameras were still working. Not all of them, but a few remained operational. The camera in the Academician's room was one of them. Valery had no idea.
Margo, a prison employee with whom Valery was also romantically involved, was monitoring the camera feeds that day and witnessed everything that happened. She had always seen Valery as a gentle, kind, and well-mannered man. Watching the footage, she could hardly believe her eyes. Believing it had been an act of self-defense, she decided to take a risk: she stole the recordings after first deleting them from the system, making it appear as though the cameras in that area had simply never been working.
She didn't know what the right thing to do was. Should she turn Valery in, or help him hide what had happened? She knew that anyone she asked for advice would tell her to report him, so instead she chose the person she believed would be the most sympathetic to Giers, and therefore the most likely to understand her.
She invited Gleb to her home, showed him the footage, and asked what she should do.
Gleb told her he knew exactly what to do and asked her to give him the recordings. Margo handed them over.
Later, when Margo finally decided she wanted to report Valery after all, she asked Gleb to return the recordings. Gleb simply claimed he had no idea what she was talking about.
He covered up Valery's crimes, but kept the footage as proof that they had happened.
For now, he chose not to tell Valery that he knew everything.
