Custom Soil Map....
The overwhelming majority of you wanted the projects soil map to be designed the same way that they were on Medicine Creek for FS19. As you can see, that project is complete. I think the way this is set up add a ton to playability of the map. If you aren't familiar with how this was set up on Medicine Creek, here's a quick rundown.
Instead of treating the soil types like "soil types" I treat them like "yield ranges". In real life, every field has locations that are both productive and unproductive comparatively. Sometimes this is due to the soil type, but oftentimes it is related more to things like trees around field edges, ditches, low spots, high spots, etc. So, I paint each field with these ranges and make it so that, no matter what you do, some parts of the field are just simply not going to perform like others. Silty clay ends up being the lowest yield range and can be found around all field edges and in what I felt were the least productive area of the field. Loam is the second lowest yield range and is usually found in your next couple passes through the field. Sandy loam is pictured in green and will provide solid yields. Loamy sand ends up providing the best crops of all. On top of the benches you will see significantly less of it than in the fertile valley along the rivers.
Setting it up like this allows for much more realistic gameplay and opens the door for other things like individual pricing of land parcels according to the amount of high yielding soil comparative to other areas. The numbers will still need tweaking, but the map, though it was time consuming to tackle, is complete.
As for the project as a whole, I still plan to release by the end of the month at the very latest. I keep hammering away at things on my punchlist. Thanks for sticking with me, the project is really starting to take shape!
