Sept. 2, 2025 - Daily News Digest

Good morning,

On this day in 1945, World War II came to an end as Japanese Foreign Minister Shigemitsu Mamoru and General Umezu Yoshijiro signed Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri.

QotD: “Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses Russia’s key airports: Russian airspace is becoming completely unsafe,” Ukrainian President Zelensky posted on X.

US/IRAN/MIL – US pounds Iran, Tehran strikes back at bases in biggest exchange since July.

Iranians and their Arab neighbours feared a return of war on Wednesday after the biggest exchange of fire between Tehran and Washington since July, with U.S. forces striking Iran's southern coast and Iran firing at American bases across the region.

The United States threatened more devastating strikes. Iran accused Washington of hitting a wedding party, killing ‌four people and wounding dozens.

Asian and European stocks tumbled after the renewed U.S. airstrikes, which pushed oil prices back up to levels unseen since July.

The U.S. military said it struck air defences, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites on Tuesday. Iran reported hits on multiple targets near the Strait of Hormuz.

"Last night was like the end of the world," Mahmoud, 38, a municipal worker in Sirik County along the strait, told Reuters by telephone, describing attacks on the area which includes the city where the wedding was reported to have been hit.

Iran responded by striking what it said were U.S. assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq, and said its aim was now to drive U.S. forces from the vast network of military bases they have occupied for decades across the Middle East.

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier steamed into Thailand's Laem Chabang on Wednesday after more than nine months at sea, including a long deployment in the Middle East marred by reports of sailors' worsening mental ‌health and deteriorating conditions on board.

The 5,000 sailors and Marines on board the ship are headed for the Thai resort of Pattaya, a rest-and-recreation stop for US troops since the Vietnam War.

Tugs guided the huge nuclear-powered carrier, dozens of warplanes lined up on its flight deck, towards the port of Laem Chabang on Wednesday morning, AFP reporters saw.

"Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge," Rear Admiral Robert Loughran, commander of the US Carrier Strike Group 3, said in a statement.

TURKEY/SHIPPING – Cargo ship with 10 crew sinks off Turkey coast – authorities.

https://www.dw.com/en/turkey-cargo-ship-collision-missing/a-78676617

Turkish authorities are searching for 10 people aboard a cargo ship that sank after a collision with another vessel in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul early Wednesday.

"We believe, and have more or less confirmed, that the Tugberk Imamoglu has sunk," Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu told reporters in Istanbul.

Uraloglu said all 10 crew members aboard the vessel were Turkish nationals and that attempts to reach them by mobile phone had been unsuccessful.

"We can say that the sinking occurred rapidly in 11 minutes. No one has been found alive," he added.

The bulk carrier Tugberk Imamoglu and the chemical tanker Alsu collided at around 3 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) off the city's western Silivri district, the Istanbul governor's office said in a statement.

Two helicopters and 12 search and rescue vessels are scouring the area.

UKR/GERMANY/DEFENSE/AERO – Ukraine is finalizing drone deal with Germany, Zelensky says.

https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/ukraine-is-finalising-drone-deal-with-germany-zelenskiy-says-2026-09-02/

"Our teams are already finalising the text of the drone deal, and this will, among other things, definitely provide both Germany and Ukraine with additional defence capabilities," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram app.

The deal will build on existing German-Ukrainian defence cooperation, including a multi-million-euro programme to supply to Kyiv some 15,000 Strila interceptor drones designed to counter Shahed-type attack drones.

In April, ‌German defence technology company Quantum Systems and Ukrainian manufacturer WIY Drones announced the creation of Quantum WIY Industries, a joint venture focused on increasing production of interceptor drones and related air-defence technologies.

Germany is also funding an order for 50,000 Shrike attack drones produced by Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall, one of the largest known drone purchases for Kyiv by a Western government.

UKR/RUS/MIL – Moscow vows to avoid airspace disruption despite Zelensky’s aviation warning.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/moscow-vows-avoid-airspace-disruption-despite-zelenskiys-aviation-warning-2026-09-02/

Russia vowed to head off any disruption to civil aviation on Wednesday after a warning by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that its ‌drones had made Russian airspace dangerous to use.

Zelenskiy warned airlines and insurance firms on Tuesday that the presence of Ukrainian drones as it responded to Russian attacks meant "the war started by Russia is closing its own skies". He said he was not targeting civil aviation.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Wednesday it had also officially notified the International Civil Aviation Organization that Russian airspace was not safe.

While European and U.S. carriers do not fly over Russia due to the war that erupted when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the airspace is used by other airlines from countries such as China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states.

Russia has stepped up its air attacks on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks, with residents enduring the seventh day of intense assaults on the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday.

GERMANY/POWER – Germany investigates suspected power substation sabotage, Russia summons German envoy.

https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20260902-germany-ivestigates-suspected-power-substation-sabotage-russia-summons-german-envoy

German authorities on Wednesday were investigating two attacks on electricity substations in different parts of the country, the latest suspected sabotage targeting critical infrastructure.

Police launched a terrorism probe over the first incident, which saw improvised explosives fired early Tuesday at a site in eastern Brandenburg state, damaging power cables.

In the second sabotage attack, unknown perpetrators allegedly caused a deliberate short-circuit by targeting overhead power lines at a substation in Bergheim in North Rhine-Westphalia state.

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul said officials were probing whether the attack was directed by a "foreign state" or left-wing extremism.

Neither attack caused widespread power outages, although operations at nearby coal-fired power stations were affected.

SPAIN/MOROCCO/IMMIGRATION – Ceuta residents call for calm as Spain rallies over enclave’s migrant crisis.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ceuta-residents-call-calm-spain-rallies-over-enclaves-migrant-crisis-2026-09-02/

Residents in Spain's Ceuta appealed for calm on Wednesday as hundreds of rallies were planned nationwide in solidarity with the North African enclave, which ‌is suffering an unprecedented migration crisis that many blame on the central government.

Nearly five weeks after at least 72,000 people crossed from Morocco in a deadly border surge, Ceuta's authorities estimate that over 10,000 migrants, including unaccompanied minors, remain stranded in makeshift camps or scattered across streets and beaches in the enclave.

Their presence has triggered near-daily protests by locals against the Spanish government's handling of the crisis, with demonstrators calling for the migrants to be sent back to their countries of origin or redistributed across Spain.

"The government has failed to act in a critical situation. It's spiralling out of control. We're tired, just like those who came are getting tired, and tensions are rising. There's a point where this will become a powder keg," said Lola, a middle-aged Ceuta resident who gave only her first name.

HONG KONG/LAW – Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong pleads guilty to collusion.

https://www.dw.com/en/hong-kong-activist-joshua-wong-pleads-guilty-to-collusion/a-78657525

Pro-democracy Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong on Wednesday pleaded guilty to a charge of colluding with foreign entities.

Wong, who is already serving a nearly five-year prison sentence for subversion, was due to be released next year and could face up to life in prison.

Wong was accused of conspiring with fellow activist Nathan Law and others to ask foreign countries, or institutions, organizations, or individuals to impose sanctions or engage in other hostile actions against Hong Kong or China between July and November, 2020.

Wong first became widely known in Hong Kong as a teenager in 2012 when he led protests against national education being introduced in the city's schools.

In 2014, he rose to fame as one of the student leaders in the city's Occupy Movement, during which demonstrators occupied streets for 79 days while calling for direct elections for Hong Kong's leader.

However, Wong's efforts to garner overseas support for protests angered Beijing, which labelled him an advocate of Hong Kong independence who had "begged for interference" from foreign forces.

The political party he co-founded, Demosisto, was disbanded after the security law was enacted on June 30, 2020.

VENEZUELA/US/OIL – Chevron expands Venezuela presence with $7 bn plan to double output in five years.

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/chevron-expands-venezuela-position-plans-7-billion-investment-2026-09-02/

Chevron will invest more than $7 billion through ‌its Venezuela joint ventures to double oil production to about 600,000 barrels per day over the next five years in the South American country, the U.S. oil major said on Wednesday.

Under new agreements, Chevron's Petroindependencia joint venture will expand to include two adjacent areas in the Carabobo region located in Venezuela's vast Orinoco Belt.

"Chevron’s history in Venezuela spans more than a century, and our expanded position reflects our confidence in the country’s deep resource potential and its ability to compete for investment within our portfolio for decades,” Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said in a statement.

The announcement comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled an unprecedented deal involving a fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves, with the American government taking an equity stake in a private oil firm operating there. Chevron's expansion is separate from that endeavour, but it further cements Trump's efforts expand output in Venezuela.
