On this day: in 1907, Russia and the United Kingdom sign the Anglo-Russian Convention, by which the UK recognizes Russian preeminence in northern Persia, while Russia recognizes British preeminence in southeastern Persia and Afghanistan. Both powers pledge not to interfere in Tibet.

QOTD: “We are closing the net on Mordisco and his networks,” warned the [Colombian] president, who announced that offensive operations against illegal armed groups would continue. “Any criminal who doesn’t surrender will end up in a body bag.”

RUSSIA/UKRAINE/MIL/TECH - Russia Torments Kyiv With New Tactic of Nonstop Waves of Drones
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/31/world/europe/ukraine-kyiv-drones-russia-sirens.html

Russia has turned to a terrifying new tactic in its assaults on Ukraine, launching nonstop waves of armed drones in recent days into busy areas of the capital, Kyiv. The relentless attacks have left residents exhausted and on edge as air raid sirens bellow nearly constantly.

With Moscow firing drone after drone into Kyiv, including many powered with jet engines that help them fly so fast they are difficult to intercept, many in the capital have begun to accept that they may be facing a new phase of the war.

This period threatens to be more dangerous and unpredictable for Kyiv than any since the first weeks of Russia’s 2022 invasion. It comes as the city already faces increased danger from powerful Russian ballistic missiles as Moscow capitalizes on depleted Ukrainian air defenses.

While Russia has long conducted deadly drone attacks on Kyiv, the weapons have often come in overnight barrages and have not tormented the city throughout the day. Residents long ago grew used to the menacing hum of slower-moving drones but now face the danger of the jet-powered models, which crash into a target before anyone nearby has a chance to run.

ICELAND/EU/POL - Iceland’s parliament will ‘discuss’ withdrawing EU bid after failed referendum
https://www.politico.eu/article/iceland-parliament-will-discuss-withdrawing-eu-bid-after-failed-referendum/

The future of Iceland’s bid to join the European Union will be debated by its parliament after a majority of voters voted against restarting accession talks in this weekend’s referendum.

A tally of votes on Sunday morning, as reported by Iceland’s RÚV national broadcaster, showed Icelanders rejecting the government’s bid to resume negotiations with the bloc by a margin of 52.8 percent to 47.2 percent. Turnout was 82.5 percent.

“We will discuss with the parliamentary foreign affairs committee how best to close this chapter. We do not intend to make any firm decisions on that,” said Social Democratic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir at a Sunday press conference when asked what the results meant for the future of Iceland’s bid.

JAPAN/MIL/ECON/POL - Japan to beef up its defense with drones, AI and missiles, defense budget plans show

Japan plans to use drones, artificial intelligence and new methods of warfare as it adapts its defense strategies to suit changing times, according to details of an 8.9 trillion yen ($55.6 billion) budget request for the coming fiscal year disclosed by the Defense Ministry on Monday.

The preliminary total is only a small increase from the 8.8 trillion yen ($55 billion) defense budget requested for this fiscal year. It will be much higher eventually, but further details will come later this year after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government approves the new security and defense strategy aimed at strengthening Japan’s counterstrike capability.

Under its five-year defense strategy set in 2022, Japan has doubled its defense spending to about 2% of its gross domestic product to build up its Self-Defense Forces’ offensive role to counter China’s growing assertiveness. Beijing has criticized Japan’s defense buildup as “new militarism.”

Japan now aims to “drastically strengthen its deterrence and response capability by transforming its defense capability” by adapting to new warfare as in Ukraine’s deployment of drones, the ministry said in a pamphlet about its budget request.

US/IRAN/MIL/TECH - New US missile appears to have left wide path of death and destruction in Iranian city, report says
https://apnews.com/article/iran-lamerd-us-prsm-lockheed-martin-b4a37c59bcf5d1a11eb87aa79f153648

It has been touted by the manufacturer as the ballistic missile of the future: lethal, long-range and pinpoint. Lockheed Martin’s Precision Strike Missile has the U.S. military investing billions to update its arsenal.

But a close look at what is believed to be its first use in combat — on the first day of the Iran war — highlights the potential peril of deploying this weapon near population centers because it appears to spray pellets over a wide area, according to a review by the conflict monitor Airwars and interviews with weapons experts and former defense officials.

Three missiles that struck the southern city of Lamerd on Feb. 28 killed civilians as far as 50 meters (164 feet) from where they detonated, and caused damage more than three times farther away, Airwars found. The missiles detonated above a sports complex and two residential neighborhoods, Airwars found. The blasts killed at least 21 civilians, including seven children, according to Iranian officials.

A key leader of the dissident factions of the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia who operated in a volatile area in the country’s southwest region was killed Sunday during a military operation, said President Abelardo de la Espriella.

The president said the death of a man known as “Felipe” or “Arcadio” was a “crushing blow” to the dissident faction led by a man who goes by “Iván Mordisco.”

De La Espriella posted a video on X presumably showing a person in a body bag near a weapon and ammunition seized by authorities during the operation […].

He said “Felipe” was responsible for multiple attacks on police stations in Valle del Cauca, using explosives dropped from drones. He commanded a unit within the Jaime Martínez faction, part of the dissident groups of the defunct FARC that refused to join the government’s 2016 peace negotiations.

ISRAEL/GREECE/MIL/TRADE - Israel signs €3 billion arms export deal with Greece

Israel and Greece signed an arms export deal worth around €3 billion (roughly $3.48 billion) on Monday, Israel's Defense Ministry said.

"Israel will build Greece a comprehensive, multi-layered air defense array, drawing entirely on Israeli-made systems," a ministry statement said.

The statement added that the systems would draw on the "extensive operational experience Israel's defense establishment has gained during the war," in seeming reference to the conflict with Iran.

UAE/IRAN/MIL - UAE says it intercepted an Iranian drone after weekend US strikes on rocket launchers in Iran

The United Arab Emirates said that it intercepted an Iranian drone over its waters Monday, an attack that comes after the United States and Iran exchanged fire over the weekend for the first time in a month.

Iranian officials said that two people were killed and several others wounded in the U.S. attack Sunday night on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded by launching missiles at U.S. sites in Jordan, which were intercepted.

During the lull in fighting, the U.S. has been ratcheting up economic pressure on Iran with the hope of forcing concessions out of Tehran, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

After the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, Iran established a chokehold on the vital strait, though which a fifth of the world’s traded oil passed in peacetime, slowing ship traffic to a trickle. That has roiled the global economy, raising prices worldwide for energy and other goods.

NIGER/RUSSIA/MIL/SEC - Niger mutiny puts Russia’s expanding role in the Sahel to the test
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/31/niger-mutiny-puts-russias-expanding-role-in-the-sahel-to-the-test

Niger’s military government has contained an attempted mutiny in the capital, but the uprising has exposed tensions inside an army struggling to contain persistent attacks by armed groups.

It has also highlighted the changing nature of Niger’s security partnerships, with Russian personnel helping government forces contain the unrest.

The mutiny began on Saturday at Base 101, a military installation at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, before fighting spread to other sensitive sites, including areas near the presidential palace and the state broadcaster.

Niger’s army said it regained control of the base after hours of fighting. State media reported that dozens of soldiers were killed or arrested, although Reuters said it could not independently verify the figures.

Russia’s Africa Corps was involved in the government’s response.

Russia’s ambassador to Niger, Viktor Voropaev, said Nigerien authorities requested the force’s assistance to neutralise the mutineers. The Associated Press reported that Africa Corps provided ground and aerial support to forces loyal to the government.

The intervention is significant because Russian forces were helping Niger’s military government confront an armed challenge from within its own military.

INDONESIA/FIRES/MÖNKE - Orangutan rescued from fire zone in Indonesia's Borneo, battles respiratory illness
https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/orangutan-rescued-fire-zone-indonesias-borneo-battles-respiratory-illness-2026-08-30/

On Sunday morning, Jais, a farmer in Ketapang, West Kalimantan on Borneo island - the province hardest-hit by raging forest fires - was en route to his farm when he found an orangutan writhing on the ground ‌in a weak state on a palm-oil plantation near the fire site.

"It was very weak, then I gave it water," said Jais, who only goes by one name.

Indonesia has intensified efforts to contain haze from forest and land fires across six provinces in Borneo and Sumatra islands after smoke triggered respiratory illnesses and forced thousands of schools to move classes online, including in neighbouring Malaysia.

Wildfires burned at least 202,010 hectares (499,177.58 acres) of land from January to July, according to Indonesia's Forestry Ministry, increasing from 107,465 burned hectares from January to June.

After finding the orangutan, Jais and other residents immediately called for help.

Some two hours later, a wildlife foundation - Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia - arrived with a veterinarian to provide the animal with treatment. It had fainted by then.

So Iceland will do what EVERY other EU country has done. Hold the vote again and again until the EU wins and then never allow another vote. Total contempt for their own people, like every EU country, like the U. S. The Missile the U.S. just deployed has a 'peril' only if you imagine the U.S. gives a flying fuck about killing civilians. This entire century proves it does not.
