That's so kewl! I am reading these too, on the Marvel app.
What a graphic and novel idea.
LMAO oh boy you really did get sucked in didn't you sweet lady.... Keep in mind these were written for children so dialog was usually pretty simple but they were designed to encourage reading and literacy in young children. Also grammar was different in those days when I was growing up so you may trip over some of it even in the simple forms presented in older comic books. When I went back to college I had to relearn grammar because of the changes and while some changes do make sense the Internet forms accepted now in schools make society less educated not more it is the dumbing down of America and that makes me sad. I went to Kindergarten already reading at an adult level but even back then I was unusual and learned to resent the phrase "you can't do that I haven't taught you how yet" . Yes this was before advanced placement courses were even considered or I might have had a Masters before I turned 18.... Oh and by the way you can still buy actual comic books on sites like poplifeshop.com or ebay.com. Don't worry about spoilers from them the movies and TV shows drastically change the scripts and often use only the characters (heroes and villains) and not even all of those or the budgets would explode. I used to have a lot of those old comics but made the mistake of leaving them at home so my mother just gave them away. Some of them would have sold for thousands apiece to collectors being first printings (I recall a first edition first printing Superman comic that was falling apart going at auction once was sold for over a million). Yes everything was drawn by hand and then colored by hand by artists back then.
This is an awesome idea. There are channels out there like comicstorian- sadly Benny passed away a few years back but he was a vet and built an amazing platform. Comic pop, and a few others but those are all people who know comics. This is cool because we get to experience a newbie walk into this space. I hope this becomes a series. And thanks for sharing this. Also there are a few documentaries out there about the history of comics that are pretty good. Sometimes the the real life stories are more interesting then the ones in the panels.
Grinding through the comics will definitely be a big challenge! After a while it'll easier to focus on an arc at a time. Like Civil war, or the death of gwen stacy.
That was fun. Narrate as YOU. I think it is safe to say we all enjoy your personality so I would not change a thing. Whatever comes natural for you will work. 👍🏻
Continuing with ‘The Chameleon’ with the Fantastic Four WILL NOT SPOIL “The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)” since the film’s not an origin story. It does bring us up to speed, though. If anything the comic will PREPARE you! It’ll segue perfectly. I say absolutely continue reading to us!
Comics are still pretty much drawn and inked by hand. Even digital comics. There are a few comics that use 3D models and even fewer that are starting to use generative AI (unfortunately). So Stan was a writer who was very verbose even back then, when comics were known to be very wordsy. Steve Ditko, one of the great comic book artists also eventually took over plotting spider-man for Stan (plotting is basically planning the story and layout before dialogue/script). This was a fun idea. I’m glad you gave it a go.
How long does it take Eralia to go from Spider-Man to Berzerk?
Wait until she meets Johnny Blaze....
WOAH, you are reading comics now. That is a crazy step in to nerd-dom that like 99% of people dont take. These old 60s comics are fun but they were very much written for little boys in the 60s lol. If you want to read more, id recommend checking out some more recent stuff. Particularly ultimate spiderman by brian michael bendis from 2000. Its a bit more mature and timely, and it has story arcs that extends over multiple issues to give the story more room to breath and give characters more depth
It WAS a different time, generation, and country then.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one ☺️
