IMHO the reason people have a generally negative memory of this movie is that the overly tropey dancing emo Peter Parker was a bit too on the nose relative to the pop culture of 2007, like it was one year after the release of Welcome To The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. I think a lot of people felt it was just too damn cheesy trying to cash in on the emo culture that was in the spotlight at that time. In retrospect, with some distance from that specific timeframe, it's just kinda silly and fun, but too many people who saw it happen in real time back then still carry a bit of a bitter feeling about it. https://youtu.be/RRKJiM9Njr8?si=MBisqcn-oxwj2wqU

I'm glad you liked it! This movie made a lot of money, but it was controversial for a few reasons. Expectations were sky high because the first two movies were iconic. Many people hated the silly, mopey, and cringe parts (especially the emo dancing). Venom fans, who can be very intense, felt let down by his portrayal and meager screentime. The movie was a bit crowded, due partly to studio meddling. I thought (and still think) it's good, just not as good as the other two. They planned to make a fourth one, but it fell through, so they rebooted with The Amazing Spider-Man instead. If you liked Venom, Sony recently made a trilogy of movies with him (but no Spider-Man). A lot of people liked that version of the character, but the movies were not especially well-received, especially the second and third ones. There was some flirtation with crossing that Venom (played by Tom Hardy) over with the MCU, but it didn't really pan out. You won't miss anything too important if you skip those, but they do exist if you're curious.

You have no idea… how INFAMOUS that strut walk was when people first saw it in the movies. They thought this was where the movie essentially went off course and there was no salvaging it. Which sucks, considering there were plans for a 4th movie with a script even written too. But Sony pulled the plug, fearful the next movie would produce worst results. Honestly, fans were pretty harsh with this movie and I believe it was studio interference that really doomed the movie to begin with. The story would’ve primarily focused on Sandman, but I think the studio wanted to throw Venom in too. In the comics, Spider-Man found the symbiote on an alien planet and thought it was just an advanced piece of alien tech. He didn’t know it was alive for the longest time, and that the suit would sometimes use his body while he was asleep. Talk about a violation. 👀 Eddie Brock was the next person to don the symbiote and they were the archenemy of Spider-Man for quite a while until Eddie decided to be more of an Anti-hero, but only after he thought Spider-Man was dead (Peter faked his death). As of now, crazy tid bit of trivia here, MARY JANE WATSON is the current host of the Venom symbiote in the comics, which is wild considering MJ was the first person Venom terrorized in his debut and left her traumatized for the longest time. Oh, and Venom calls himself Venom because he’s poison to both Peter Parker and Spider-Man (at least going by the cartoons). Okay, done info dumping. Glad you enjoyed the movie and thought it was a blast. It’s refreshing to see someone not be influenced by other interpretations and enjoy the movie for what it is. 😌 Can’t wait to see your next reaction!

For me the 3rd movie was a bit cheesy, still entertaining but it had it's cringy moments more so than the other two...

Finally getting to this one. It got mocked at the time for the whole emo-Spiderman thing they had going on here. While I agree with you that Peter is very cringe in this one insofar as his ability to communicate with Mary Jane, I do have to point out that Mary Jane has her own hypocritical issues here - Has a job where she is paid to make out with her coworkers. In the 2nd movie, tried "their kiss" with her then boyfriend/fiancee. I'm not saying anything Peter did regarding their relationship and his lack of respect for their relationship was excusable. I'm just saying he's not the only one with room for improvement.

Another Spidey trilogy wrapped up! And yeah… I can definitely see why this one is the most divisive of the three. I’m usually pretty forgiving with movies, but this one didn’t fully land for me either. Not terrible by any means, just kind of all over the place at times. A lot of the middle section leaned super hard into the relationship drama and “Peter being a dumb boyfriend” energy, and then… Swag Parker happened. 😭 The second-hand embarrassment was brutal. I think part of it is that the symbiote storyline gets introduced so early, but then disappears for a huge chunk of the movie, so it keeps feeling like you’re waiting for the actual plot to kick in. There are still some really strong moments though. The final stretch is definitely the best part of the movie for me. Sandman’s whole storyline actually hits pretty hard, especially with the “desperate parent trying to help their kid” angle. That stuff always gets me. That said, I’m really glad you’re watching these older Spider-Man movies. Even when they’re messy, they’ve all got their own charm and style, and it’s fun seeing where so much modern superhero stuff pulled inspiration from. I can't wait for you to see Andrew Garfield's take. I'm curious who you will prefer; I am definitely more of a SpiderField fan more than SpiderGuire. Also, genuinely, add the Venom movies to your list at some point. They’re their own thing tonally, but Tom Hardy is fantastic in them. I've only seen the first one, but its really good.

"Evil spider, dark spider...." No it is Venom who you will meet in detail in other movies.

l
luanfsp · May 12, 2026

You can watch the Venom movies from 2018 to now. All made by Sony just like the Spider-Mans before Homecoming. Both Spider-Man and Venom will integrate the MCU. Not that highly rated movies but not bad too.

So excited for you get through all these movies! I just want to say again that I think it’s better you watch the animated movies after No Way Home. It’s not an absolute requirement but the animated movies do have some cool nods to the live action movies that will let you enjoy it more and understand their context. And I’m saying that as someone who is most excited to see your reaction to the animated movies because I think those are the best of the bunch

Venom was introduced as the Symbiote in 1984’s Secret Wars comic. I started collecting comics in 1982, so it's one of the first hundred comics I purchased. Wikipedia - “The symbiote was first introduced as Spider-Man's new black costume in The Amazing Spider-Man #252 (May 1984) as part of a story called "Homecoming!" The story takes place after Spider-Man's return from the events of the miniseries Secret Wars, where he first obtains the black costume. The full first appearance of Venom is in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988), after the symbiote bonds with Eddie Brock.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom_(character)

Sandman was such a good antagonist - ahead of its time. A shame that storyline necessarily got put in a corner so they could continue the Harry arc and then shoehorn in Venom.

L
Lizard Ahaz · May 10, 2026

It seems somebody is in a great mood... You will notice that the reason people were o disappointed in Spiderman 3 was the lower quality in special effects and lighting/coloration which is because John Dykstra (Industrial Light and Magic founded by George Lucas) was not involved in #3 after doing an excellent job with 1&2 (His daughter was playing bit parts in 1&2 unnamed in the background) After #2 I suspect you now see that Spiderman is one of the strongest super heroes not in the hulk's class but much stronger than Bucky or Captain America. When you start on the Amazing Spiderman you will be in a different timeline and be introduced to a new love for Peter and reintroduced to his professor Dr Curt Connors. I hope you enjoy that set of movies as much as you enjoyed the first. https://youtu.be/CX45pYvxDiA?si=46hxl_Nfhn8d6ftf

Finally Bully Maguire. Harry took his greens. A jailbird is still a bird. Is this "Enter Sandman"?

S
Sean Dame · May 10, 2026

I guess in the comics there is an arc (there are so many) where instead of being bad (the green goblin) Harry is good and works together with Spiderman, Harry is called the "American Son" but it didn't last.
