I’m a bit late to this one thanks to a busy few days, but I finally got around to watching it—and once again, a fantastic reaction. One thing I really enjoy is how quickly you pick up on things before they happen. “It takes blood” right before the special wand literally draws blood, “the giant” just before Hermione leads Umbridge straight to Grawp, and “it’s giving prophecy magic ball” moments before the prophecy reveal. Watching those connections click in real time is such a big part of why your reactions are so fun to watch. Something that always stands out to me on rewatching this movie is how stark the contrast is with the third film. Back then, Harry blows up his aunt and Fudge waves it off—“we don’t send people to Azkaban for blowing up their aunt.” Now, only two years later, he’s trying to expel Harry for defending himself. It really highlights how much of this film is driven by fear. I liked your theories about the Ministry too—whether they were playing some kind of long game to protect Harry, or actively working with Voldemort. The reality being denial and wilful ignorance is… uncomfortably familiar, and it’s wild how relevant this movie feels in current times. I also laughed when Umbridge interrupted Dumbledore and you immediately said, “I’m gonna have beef with this woman.” Yep. That’s universal. She’s genuinely one of the most hated characters in the entire series—honestly, more than Voldemort for a lot of people. If you’re ever interested, there’s a YouTube channel called Cinema Therapy that does a really good breakdown of her character that’s well worth a watch. A couple of smaller things you touched on: yes, James absolutely was a bully at school, though it’s generally implied he grows out of it and changes a lot later on. And the voice in Harry’s prophecy was Professor Trelawney. The books go more into the idea that while she mostly comes across as a fraud, she does occasionally make genuine prophecies without realizing it—you’ve actually already seen one before. Dumbledore hiring her is partly about keeping her safe because of that. Another great reaction overall. Only a few films left now. This one’s always been a favourite of mine—though it’s hard to choose when Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 are so strong. The next film is… a bit more divisive. Still good, just a frustrating adaptation in places—but I’ll leave that for after you’ve seen it. Now onto Ant-Man.

Some more spiler-free lore for those interested! You asked about Neville's parents. They were Aurors (Wizarding FBI Agents) who were part of the founding of the original Order of the Phoenix along with Dumbledore and the Potter's. The full prophecy that Voldemort wanted says; "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...Born to those to have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies." AKA Voldemort believed that a child of one of his enemies born in July would be his downnfall. So he found out which of the resistance had kids born in July, and it turned out to be both the Potters and the Longbottoms. Voldy chose to target the Potters first because they were half-blood, and the rest is history. Unfortunately, four Death Eaters (including Bellatrix) captured and tortured the Longbottoms anyway, using the Cruciatus curse primarily. They were tortured beyond healing. They were sadly admitted into long-term care for the rest of their lives, in a mostly vegetative state, and Neville was sent to live with his grandmother. In the book they go and visit Mr Weasley in the hospital after the snake attack and while there they run into Neville visiting his parents and he finally opens up and tells them the whole story. Personally, out of the entire series its the one scene in the books that they left out of the movies that I lament the most.

Do you need more Gary Oldman (Sirius) in your life? == The Fifth Element (1997), Air Force One (1997), Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy (2005-1012), Slow Horses (episodic 2022-2025), Sid and Nancy (1986)

Thank you for this, Eralia! I really needed this today. Also, I’d highly recommend that once you’re done with the films, it would be great to see a reaction to the HBO 20th anniversary reunion which brings back cast and crew to discuss making the films and telling stories about their experiences. It’s a really lovely ensemble of closure. Good luck with your move and excited for whatever comes next!

In regard to your comments on the progression of the movies, something that I realized over time is that these novels, and by extension their films, encompass an entire generation's worth of adolescence. And as the films progressed from whimsy and wonder to darker and more mature topics like relationships, political turmoil, fear, and even death, it mirrors what the audiences would have felt as they continue to grow older year by year with the characters. As children we view things through a decidedly rose-tinted innocence, and as we mature and learn more of the world, we're forced to confront the darker and more complex aspects of the world we live in. In the first film, Harry defeats the villain simply by existing. In this film he really has to struggle to find something worth fighting for. But one thing that continues to endure are the messages, themes, and qualities of the protagonists we've come to know and love, and their courage and resilience even after their lives have been irrevocably altered, not by a world that they asked for or deserved, but that they were given. I've absolutely been loving this watch along series and I can't wait to see you finish out the series. Happy you're home, and catch you on the next one. ❤️

Once again you expressed my exact same feelings about hating Umbridge and my frustration about Harry not turning her in. Thank you for giving me a voice.

N
Niklaus · January 7, 2026

If you think the atmosphere in the movies is dark and depressing sometimes, I can tell you the books were ten times worse. The whole Snape training Harry to protect himself in the books felt like he was torturing him, even with good intentions. And Umbridge, I think they captured the essence pretty good but Harry was actually in detention multiple times, going through the same thing every time. Umbridge really really hated Harry. I actually felt bad watching the reaction on couple occasions because you were saying you dont want to watch it. Mrs Figgs, the old lady who saw the dementors, is actually character who was mentioned much more in the books, she was basically Harrys neighbour who watched over Harry when he was a child.

I love the duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore in this film. It's never really expressed how powerful Dumbledore really is in the movies and how Voldemort fears him.

PRE REACTION - "took a pause because I was in emotional shambles" oh no... 😂 AFTER REACTION- Yhup I knew it tears 😂 BUT I do not blame you in the slightest haha and YES who ever is hiring these teachers needs checked lmfao and sirius calling Harry James really caught me in the feels man then to see him die like that 😭 Also it is never mentioned any further so I'll say it here Nevilles parents aren't dead they are in a psychological unit Bellatrix tortured them that much that they don't remember anything not even Nevilles that's why he lives with his grandmother like Sirius said "suffered a fate worse than death", can't wait for the next one 😁 RIP SIRIUS 🙏💐
