Soft was “careless,” but I think he may have ACTUALLY been careless. Chances are at least some spirits in The Collection are destructive forces that would kill innocents. And it sounds like he just let them ALL out, which is an understandable reaction to seeing the horrors of The Collection. But what if The Stranger was in there? What if Soft released him? Or some other evil. Grandma Wren took a much more strategic approach. She was surgical. One spirit at a time, likely after some kind of review to ensure she is in fact freeing an innocent spirit. Way better than Soft’s approach

Been loving these talkbacks! I am also very excited to hear Brennan and Aabria talk about the process behind the creation of the citadel. I wouldn't mind giving ten minutes each to how the courts were designed, what the seeds were behind the different archmages, how additional flavor like the unfamiliars and the tumori were invented, where the bloody carnival came from, all that. Also, how do you start making a setting that's clearly oriented at one of your players interesting to your other players? I just want to hear as much inside baseball as I can haha

As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, learning that relationship degradation was a *thing* and that a lot of people naturally experience it changed my entire understanding of interacting with humans 😂

Outer Wilds is an AMAZING video game. For those who really liked Outer Wilds, might I also suggest a game I just finished and loved for the same reasons: Dredge. Very cool, very Maine, very Cthlulu, very thalassophobia. Very similar to Outer Wilds. Highly recommend.

That moment between the three of them in the gallery honestly felt like the kind of foreshadowing thing an author drops in book 1, when book 3 has the former friends tragically leading opposed armies and shouting recriminations at one another from across battlefields. I was like "OH NO STOP FIGHTING BE FRIENDS"

If we’re being honest about rail-based divorces it’s mostly because of the spouses of train crews not being able to handle the terrible hours their partner has to work and the fact that their partner can’t plan events in advance because they’re always on call.

49:40 congrats Erika on the ADHD, lol. A lot of Neurodivergent people forget about people when they aren't there, but feel like no time has passed when you see the again. I and most of my friend are neurodivergent, so we've forgotten about each other for months, then talk like no time has passed. Unfortunately, only my Neurotypical friends have gotten married, so I don't get invited to a lot of weddings: cause I wasn't on top of maintaining the friendships (aka I forgot for too long)

I really appreciate that the prison metaphor for spirits is one of those classic “Brennan does a sort of horror of humanity take, while also pointing to areas of nuance, and the characters being introduced to this situation get to take a stance.” Like as someone who literally talked with my therapist yesterday about “The power of metaphor,” it is a really nice like kneading of the imagination.

Best way to see the Statue of Liberty without a tour is to take the IKEA ferry, you get a nice water view, and everyone else is just kind of there to buy furniture, so no competition to get photos. And then you can get a cinnamon roll at the end. From a New Yorker who never stopped looking up 😊
