Behold stranger for I am GLEEP GLORP THE HEARER, and I hear all, not just the sounds of this world, but the sounds of worlds beyond number*. What has been, what will be, what will has been, and what might will have been as well. ALL POSSIBILITIES are hearable to me, GLEEP GLORP THE HEARER. And now for the first time, I will share with you these sounds of strange yesterdays, potential presents, and....OTHER TOMORROWS.
[MAJOR SPOILERS FOR BOOK ONE AHEAD, PROCEED AT OWN RISK]
BEHOLD and BE NOT AFRAID, for these other tomorrows include:
What if Ame DIED in the final battle?
What if Suvi didn't make it to the cottage in time?
What if Ame chose peace for Naram?
What if Eursulon took up the sword of Night?
What if Suvi didn't escape the Palace of Wind and Stars before the end of the conclave?
What if Ame didn't get caught by Keen in Reedport?
What if Ame and Indri voted for war against the Citadel?
What if Eursulon freed Opalthinned from the Kassov collection?
What if the Antivolists won the wizard civil war?
And most of all:
What if Eursulon refused the call and remained a moderately successful regional theater actor?

Okay okay, no wait, I was screaming at my phone for the whole "What if Suvi doesn't it make it in time" section 😭 Why would they go to Eursalon???? If Grandma Wren dies before she and Ame get cursed, she never has/gets to tell Ame that Wavebreaker would break the curse!! I loved what ya'll came up with, but there's even more to that question that we never even got to see!!! In this case, Suvi shows up, Ame gets cursed, but without Grandma Wren there to point it out, she never realizes she's cursed; the Man in Black arrives and Ame makes her bargain, so maybe they start focusing on that instead, and eventually the witches reach out to Ame for the Conclave and she has to attend without her memories or knowledge of her station; also eventually Steel reaches out to bring Suvi back home and compel Ame to trust them; but, unless something else happens that propels them to have to go find Eursalon, they don't go to Silbury, or Port Talon, right?? It's a whole different campaign!!

Dude recontextualizing Gallows as a scary figure crime boss with everything our gang has done since they first met is so fun!
It's fascinating to hear how drastically wrong things could have gone with different player decisions, bc in the moment of e.g. Ame deciding how to counsel Naram or Suvi having the idea to break a fissure in the wall, multiple options seem plausible; it never feels like we're on rails, so the good outcomes feels so much more earned.
The second "funnier" retelling of Eursalon's introduction is somehow even sadder 😂😭
I loved Brennan's description of how witches are designed not to be useful to empire: "How many AOE spells can you lay down?" "None." "Ok who are you good are you at hurting?" "People who've hurt us." "No - what if you're starting it?" "We don't start it."
I admit I was a little disappointed when Eursalon took the safe reasonable route and skipped the center of Haliker Forest. It's such a joy to get to discover what Brennan had planned for that encounter! Honestly sounds pretty dope
Friend of Dorthy goes as far back as the 30’s as the Dorthy is Judy Garland in Wizard of Oz. Gay men and culture has used it in several ways through the decades

The Irish revival is a great example to illustrate the point, prior to independence, the crown had outlawed Irish. Also some of the creole languages and their descendants like that of the Gullah, emerged because of the local authoritarian supremacists dictating language of enslaved people. I love Lou’s commitment to convincing everyone that his character introduction at the theatre is, in fact, not the saddest thing you have ever heard.

I was so happy listening to this, what a fun and interesting discussion! But I gotta say, Aabria mentioning Professor Screweyes from We’re Back! was a crazy moment for me because it was my favourite movie as a kid and I was obsessed with it but whenever I mention it to people now no one knows about it! The scene where Professor Screweyes dies (or whatever that was with the crows at the end) is an image that haunted and inspired me as a kid because it was so chilling yet oddly beautiful

I thought the not going out at night was to hide Suvi from Indri being able to find her through the stars.
Maybe both. My question is that the CA did have her going out at night one time toward the end when the children spent the night at the shrine and caught fireflies. Maybe the players were thinking more about rolling and less about story at that point and just forgot.
Small thing but big for me, what if Ame had gotten to check out the rooms of the witches whose stations died out in Indri's palace?? There was only so much time and other choices were made, but I wanted to see inside those rooms so bad!!

Brennan essentially described Grandma Wren as the liberal reformer refusing to do anything but play politics and decorum and not understand that violence is the release valve. This is sooooooo relevant right now in the US. Her willingness to cooperate with the Citadel mirrors liberal/fascist alignment. It’s so good.
I don't think she was cooperating with the Citadel. She was cooperating with Soft and Stone who thought they were rooting out corruption in the Citadel. You're right that she was doing her best to avoid violence, though.

This whole discussion reminds me of something I've wanted to suggest for a while: I think that somewhere down the line, like maybe before the final book of the campaign down the line, the gang should do a short interlude or multiple episode series where we visit the worst timeline of WWW. But specifically the worst timeline with all three characters still alive at the end of it, being the darkest version of themselves. Does that mean Ame turned down the path of wickedness during her tutelage with Indri? Did Eursalon get the final curse of the mushroom spirit laid on him way back then and is now a monstrous champion of the King of Night? Did Suvi end up finally being the daughter Steel wanted her to be, becoming her successor, ushering in The New World? I'm thinking very "Injustice in DC comics"-twisted timeline here. And you all probably already know what they should call it; The Darkest Tomorrow.

True facts, listening to this made me realize and doubly appreciate all the strong decisions the characters made in this campaign - esp wrt strategic retreat! Much as I adore the D20 Intrepid Heroes, there’s always some amount of ridiculous shenanigans happening just because it’s funny. And when the characters aren’t explicitly designed to be clowns (Fantasy High, Starstruck), occasionally I’m like guys come on - with stakes this high you’re really going to going to do this reckless thing? Like it’s fine, but you’re mostly very aware you’re watching a comedy show. In WWW we get to see characters who think about consequences more. Not that they don’t miscalculate or mess up or do reckless things, but those choices are very in character and part of their arc. I am glad Lou got to have his fun though :)

in the other tomorrow where Steel wrecks the crew, Sly can swoop in afterwards to get Ame, Eursulon, & the Fox's body and get help to resurrect them... but Ame & the Fox's heads get switched in the process. Book 2 has Erika piloting the Fox's body with Ame and Brennan running Ame's body as the Fox. tell me that's not the brightest of tomorrows!

Wait, if The Man in Black Attacked Wren *after* the Children's Adventure but *before* book one, why was Suvi forbidden to step on the road in the Children's Adventure? Cause even in Matsuri they have to prevent her from stepping on the road.
I mean, Grandma Wren's magic was specifically hiding Suvi from Stone and Soft's enemies and the road thing was a restriction on that. It seems possible that The Man in Black, as a member of many pantheons (e.g. The Three) who was fundamentally at odds with the Citadel was an enemy even then, or it might have just been somewhat unrelated.

'What ifs' in fantasy stories (or any topic) are my favourite conversations to hear and have!! Love this ep. Mine would be, what if there had still been a Witch of the Wide Blue Sea when the Naram debacle happened? I picture her surfing up on some driftwood. But not silly like. Very sagely and rising from the depths like a sea monster goddess. Also, I really really want our two gruff hotties (Eorghan and Will Gallows) to meet.

Oh my god. Erika’s story about GATE is almost EXACTLY what happened to me 😭 diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. Took the test when i was like 8; literally could not focus on the test, did not pass. Somehow ended up in GATE later when a teacher was like, “Why aren’t you in this?”
I do not regret not being in GATE, but raise ✋ s for the adult ADHD crowd 😭
Oof "Seeing your own traditions through the eye of an onlooker" hits me *real* hard on multiple levels. --------------------------------- (What follows is my own specific experience with this, so feel free to ignore it 😁) - I'm American (like, since Revolutionary War American), but of predominantly European descent, and everything I know about the cultures of my ancestry has been learned academically after the fact. -- That doesn't even touch the surprise .5% Southern East African that came up in my 23&me, which means I have both African ancestry and Black American ancestry, and I have no living connection with either of them. - I was born in Texas, and both my parents were Texan, but I grew up all over because of my dad's military-adjacent job, so there is a *lot* of Texan cultural stuff that I didn't learn about until I moved back to Texas for college.

I'm curious if Brennan has ever encountered the TTRPG system of Ars Magica, which features roleplaying wizards in the Middle Ages of Mythic, Fantastical Europe. Really rules-crunchy, but a fascinating take on the mechanics of magic, as well as allowing exploration of the politics between different houses of wizards.

The confirmation that it would have been worse for Port Talon if Ame had advised Naram to sacrifice himself is so important to me. It reaffirms that those who have been crushed under the boot of empire have no obligation to stay underfoot for the good of those around them. Accepting victimization only perpetuates its continuation.

It baffles me that these lovely performers and people think that their episode is going too long around the hour mark. Dude, this could be over three hours or more and I would be all over it, multiple times. I deeply appreciate the level y'all respect the audiences time and how difficult it is to put together (especially on the editing side, wow 😥) but I think I speak for many of us in that these episodes are *never* long enough!!
