Damn I really appreciate the thoughtful answer about fantasy races being not inherent to myth and folklore, but moreso to Tolkein's interpretation of 19th-20th century race science. I love lotr, and I appreciate that we can acknowledge not all of Tolkein's contributions need to be carried forward by default in any fantastic or mythic story.

I feel like I have such affection for the main trio + DM that I would be afraid a guest who wasn't incredibly familiar with the pod might take things in a wildly different direction or do something that felt tonally out of place

Re guests: I think what makes the most sense is having guests join for one shots and interludes. Not that aren't some amazing people in actual play spaces but as long as y'all are in WWW the triad, as Erika put it, is the strongest shape

The thing Brennan talked about with tying fantasy species to evolutionary quirks was a thing I was super into when I was younger. In my first DM 1-20 campaign of 5e (I had done others), I set commonality points to basically core evolutionary ancestries. So basically, Giants, Fey, Mortals, and Dragons, and then tried to map it out. For example, Elves (eladrin, technically) were mortals born of fey parentage. Dwarves were born of giants with mortals (making Dwarves the "small" race of the "giant" vertical). Halflings were those born of Dwarves and mortals, Gnomes were fey influenced Halflings. It was a fun experiment at the time, but it does get weird on a sociopolitical level. Like, even in fiction, it felt like measuring the purity of each origin, which felt yucky.

I saw this comment on YouTube and wanted to make sure someone here might see it, but can we get a WBN Reading List? We’ve heard about various stories and books that the world and characters are inspired by. Things like the nature of witches, what it means to set foot on the road, the nature of magic, etc… are connected to “other stories,” on occasion. I just want to know what these stories/books are or perhaps essays/videos that break them down.

It is really really cool that they decided to reach outside of the typical High Fantasy for world building inspiration. It feels really natural and intuitive in a way that I would have a very easy time recommending this to newbies to ttrpg as well as seasoned players for a breath of fresh air. This is the most relaxing AP without ever being boring for a even second.

While it is true that Brennan has a track record of playing PC's that die, have died or start out dead, it is important to note that Citizen Doctor Abraham Merhermblur is an outlier who dies multiple times per D&D Chaos and shouldn't be counted.

I love Brennan's answer about how he wants WBN to have multiple tones throughout the campaign, depending on what best suits the story in particular moments. One of the things I think separates WBN from a lot of Actual Plays I've come across is this exactly. The WBN crew can be very funny when it is called for, but also can be serious or sad, whatever depending on how the story is flowing. I don't personally know of another Actual Play that has such funny comedians who also can just completely drop the jokes and be serious when the time comes for that.

Haha to be fair to Ame, I think of it as City, Country, and The Wilds. Unless you REALLY wanna be dat suburban witch. 😂 Because there’s a kind of country town that’s just on the edge of the wild. Where cows and sheep outnumber people, and there’s a few old folks who know all the history of the land, and the people who live there have small talk like “oh the frosts came back in unexpectedly this year, I bet Old Jim is gonna have a tough apple harvest come September”. And they all like, lean back on their porch chairs and say “Yep, maybe so.” That’s the kind of place I grew up.
