The worst part is that when you try to unsubscribe they route you to their retention department, and those bastards ARE THE WORST!
Well, as you've been signed up for capitalism again, I guess I'll have to kept my Patreon subscription going! Maybe next year you'll forget to tick the box :-)
This may be where Jeph is going, but in real life when rich people donate to charity, they usually create their own "charities" which they retain control over. A big part of that being the tax loophole. I wouldn't be surprised if her legal people did something like that. Seems like the obvious thing to do would be to set up a local program to pay for AI in need to get preventative checkups & repairs done at their shop. Help people in need, and get money to her friends in a way they'd feel good about.
100% this!!!

Worst. Gift Subscription. EVER.
A measure of human nature is that alleviating human suffering doesn't happen because people would suffer to make the change. You know, the *wrong* people. "Us."
Damn. Signed up at birth. Still unhappy about it.
Can't tell if religion or capitalism...
Nice to finally learn about Hanners' financial situation, since I've been wondering about it since she started working at Coffee of Doom... what about Marigold though? She does have that kind of money (if Hanners' reaction to her finances is anything to go by). She could invest in Union Robotics (I wonder if Momo might be the one to pitch that to her). Have we seen Marigold yet since the time skip? I wonder if she's bought a house. Or mastered Downward-Facing Dog
Maybe Hannelore can invest in Union Robotics.
But my plans to find a time machine relies entirely on capitalism being a thing! Step 1) Find a time machine I conveniently left for myself Step 2) Use time travel to manipulate the cash markets to unlock infinite wealth Step 3) Travel to future to buy the time machine Step 4) Send the time machine I just bought back in time for me to conveniently find
Look up the story "Dominos" by C.K. Kornbluth if you've never read it. :)
"I like the way you think and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter..."
Capitalism has that pesky auto renew on
The speed at which I would delete that email, and block the sender so I never have to participate ever again
Gig economy, very similar to frog gigging.
Good thing this is a comic, and doesn't reflect the actual crash of employment and eventual revolt of the 95% unemployed population that's coming, maybe within our lifetimes.
There's a lot of folks that predict ultra-high levels of unemployment due to AI but it ain't gonna happen. Even the 1% of the 1% that have most of the money know that for a functioning society to work you need (1) a functioning economy which you don't have if most people can't afford to buy anything and (2) people need to be kept busy otherwise they're going to have lots of free time to rise up against those in power. Sure, they'll allow a certain amount of unemployment, maybe even 20% or more, but I see a lot of laws coming to stop it getting any higher than that. In the meantime I suggest reading https://marshallbrain.com/manna1.
*sigh* This is what I get for not reading the fine print. Stupid capitalism...
Unrelated to the plot and the discussion, but the long-sleeve under the short-sleeve is a good look on Dora.
I think there is fine print on money that says by using it you agree to participate in capitalism.
I would LOVE to check out of Capitalism.
I thought Capitalism was when you NEVER TURNED OFF CAPS LOCK!
BobC, that was a CAPITAL comment.
Huh,... I thought she was smarter than that. How did she globetrot so hard and log after she cut ties with her mom? what she'd have to spend to travel would definitely buy a coffee shop on the east coast.
Well, apparently one reason she could globetrot was that she worked her way.
Not an email. A little pamplhet that comes with regular mail. A checkbook
At the very least, there needs to be a way to opt out while maintaining a decent standard of living. Maybe a basic income?
I would support that.
I agree with Hannelore
I just want to say I'm really impressed how good Jeph's art has got over the years. Panel four is a really lovely example of close-up face sketching.
This one time on Twitter someone said capitalism is better than socialism because capitalism is voluntary but socialism is coerced. I asked how to opt out but they didn't have an answer.
It feels like, until we violently dis-incentivize generating scarcity as a means of wealth, and subsequently power, acquisition, we'll not hit the post-scarcity society we are capable of and deserve.
There's probably a reason all post-utopian fiction posits that there's some catastrophe that precedes the utopia. There's no gradual path to a post-scarcity society that we can imagine, it requires a violent upheaval first.
Screw Capitalism. Socialism's where it's at.
I'm lucky that way. I've got four people willing to give me a free meal if I need one and I know three restaurants that'll let me "pay them Tuesday for a hamburger today," so to speak.
I saw the title to this and my immediate response was "Oh NO! Is Jeph stopping QC?" Jeph, I need to thank you for getting my heart JUMP STARTED there... :P
Please confirm that Hanners can still request pizzas from space if the situation demands it.
I think she can request an orbital bombardment if the situation demands it. In fact, I think she *has*.
Well that answers what Hanners financial situation has been like. I figured she’d done something like that.
I hope Faye still thinks Dora survived CofD's formative years on a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3585
I'm continually impressed and in awe/proud of how much Hannelore has grown and accomplished and how far she has come since she was first introduced.
Is it at this point that Marigold appears with more money than a Saudi Prince?
I hope Hanners has at least enough for 12 months of rent.
I suspect Hanners has "fuck you" money.
We need to socialize capitalism. So the most people can benefit from a system.
The capitalism GDPR erases you from history and sends the IRS after you.
This is exactly how I feel about capitalism. It sucks.
Free-Market Capitalism might actually be a good idea. We'll never know for sure until someone actually tries it.
I fuckin agree.
Where can I sign up?
Hey everyone, look at Mr. 'I assume I'll be a winner' Tannerbot over here!
