She Mad

This reminds me of when Hannelore was mad at her mom and said she thought her face was stuck like that
Haha, 💯
This strip needed to be at least 4 panels longer, with panel 1 and 3 alternating/repeating 4 more times.
Claire is not a mass effect fan
"Who is the Director?" - "That is irrelevant, you are Number 6!"
I wonder if we'll run into Steve?
Let's not forget that at some point Jeph will have to push the reset button to get Claire and Marten back to the setting of the story. That constrains this arc to have Claire either not be offered the job, or refuse the offer. But there could still be some lasting effects from her visit to CubeTown. Sorta like "The Wizard of Oz": Dorothy comes home, there's one less bad witch, and the government of The Emerald City has a new set of leaders that will do things differently.
There are other options than reset button. - Marten and Claire leave the strip (I don't think this will happen, but a lot of people have worried about it in the comments.) - Introducing a new locale that the comic will sometimes alternate to. Much like Aurelia's place, it's a bit removed from where the rest of the cast hangs out, but it's a bit more definitively stated by what amount of distance. - Start of the transition of the whole cast to Canada. At first this would look indistinguishable from the prior option. Or maybe it would look indistinguishable from the next option. - Providing a more thorough explanation for why Marten appears so infrequently in the comic that initially focused primarily on him and Faye, but he and Claire still do appear from time to time in the strip.
Surely, Claire, you mean “No talking *to* the elevator”, right?
Of course she's right. And don't call her Shirley.
Martin’s clearing his ears every 10m to equalize the pressure. Claire’s flexing her eustachian tubes open angrily. Do QCrobots have trapped gasses they need to worry about?
We know they tend to vent coolant when... excited.
Clair is mad... and SCARY. The director seems to get his ass chewed out by her
Honestly, I hope Claire does get this sorted out. I still believe this entire hiring process has been out of whack from the start, and this result is the culmination of an entire cattle station's worth of bullshit. At the very least, she deserves answers. At most, she could at least be given clear and coherent instructions as to what she is actually needed there for, and decide what she wants to do. Maybe sleep on it and talk it through with Marten.
I would not be surprised if the Director is either somehow Yay or Pintsize.
amgry D:<
Im calling it, the actual cube town is super efficient and logical, but they host a circus up top to throw people off.
The director is a they? Oh dear.
could've been worse could've had to go up like 50 flights of stairs
“Bruno, your room is the WORST!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVHPXG-dTo4
I can see a comic not too far in the future where someone wonders why Marten is so calm surrounded by wacky AIs and also one superhuman intellect. And he has to explain about Pintsize and Melon and Faye's AI girlfriend and Station and .... I doubt Jeph will do that, but it's what entered my head.
Now I'm trying to remember if Marten has ever met Melon.
lot of folks in the comments not getting why a trans woman might have a severe response to employer surveillance...
Or, for that matter, why anyone might have a problem with prospective employer snooping while you're on an island in a foreign country. Apparently, anytime a woman is angry, they are an irrational Karen or an overly emotional bitch. Pretty ridiculous.
I love her... I don't know, Claireness? Her sense of order and propriety *WILL* be respected.
Claire is in a situation where she's interacting with a series of people who, one after another, do not give her that "click" feeling of having their shit tied down. She wants to find that one person who will talk to her and give her the vibe that things are being attended to. And she hasn't found them yet.
Fanny pack going all P
Lots of people seem to think Claire's reaction is a cumulation of everything else we've seen of cubetown so far but IMO it's mostly about finding this random security person lurking in her room. I don't think I would just take that in stride either. I also don't think she's AS angry as everyone seems to be reading it. My take was "VERY disapproving boss mode"
Very good point! Even after my long-@ss posts I think this is probably the biggest reason she's so upset or at least the I-beam that broke the camel's back. The rest of the experience probably hasn't helped but without the 'Evan Event' I bet she would have just chalked it up to being in Marten's weirdness aura and slept on it. 😅
No good comes from staying that angry.
She's giving off Angry Hannelore vibes here.
Claire status: flounce mode jammed, call for backup
I kinda want to pull an Elliot and pat Evan on the head...
Not the dismissive head patting like he did for Yay, more along the lines of how he felt about Brun. Edit: I worry that this could cost Evan her job, and an AI, as we have seen through some of the cases that Roko has taken through the nonprofit, that losing your job as an AI can sometimes also mean becoming disembodied as well.
will this finally mark the triumphant return of 'floating black slab emitting a low hum'??
This is my theory from the start of this arc.
Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.
down.
Is...is the Director that big squid eye Hannelore saw a while back?
I would like it to be :)
She's a bit of a Karen...
Bruh what
Or when she steps in to see the Director it is just a mirror.
oooh, I like that idea!
It is going to be Sara's brain in a tank, controlling a cybernetic allosaurus body.
Who’s Sara?
She had a weird interview for a position that she herself said she was unqualified for. She was warned by two of the most powerful AIs in existence that Cubetown was a "hot mess" that needed "someone with even a modicum of common sense". She was enthusiastically greeted by someone excited to see her. She saw a scheduled explosion. She met a couple of people who work there who were very pleasant to her. She was given a nice tour. She met someone just trying to do their job who, if they’d finished five minutes earlier, Claire would never have known about them. So obviously the only reasonable response is to get stuck in fucking bitch mode. HOW DARE THEY TREAT HER SO WELL, THOSE MONSTERS! She turns up for an interview for a position she has no professional experience for and they TRY TO MAKE HER FEEL WELCOME! Those bastards! Off with their heads. Yeah, sorry Claire but YTA bigtime in this one. I like you less for this story line.
I hope that when you find yourself out of place and in stressful and confusing circumstances, the people around you display more empathy than you are displaying here.
Claire is going to be offered the position of COO, isn’t she?
She has already aced the interview
I hereby note that grammatical usage has been so far: “The Director is” “They are”
I’m convinced The Director is an instance of Yay.
Cubetown attracts/employees two types of people. 1) far out visionaries who have a lot of ideas and innovations but cannot actually finish any of their projects 2) people whose interests/skills make them look like an ideal candidate on paper- but they have little to no actual experience. The overall lack of direction/management means that these two types end up actually being "bad" at their jobs.
It's "benign neglect" to the extreme
Okayyyyyyy
Claire is already in charge, she just hasn't realized it yet... 😈
I'm getting the vibe Claire is taking no prisoners
It's like a kindergarten for supers in desperate need of a teacher that takes no guff from the kids. Yay sure wasn't joking when they said Cubetown needs an adult.
The question is, does Claire have the spoons to be the adult? There's a line between flexibility and disfunction, and Cube Town is well across the line — the energy necessary to bring it back is going to be a lot. Only Claire can decide if she has it, and if the compensation offered will be enough to expend it. I hope however this plays out, she makes the choice best for her mental health. 💜
People who can handle uncomfortable quiet (and use to further fuel apparently justified rage) and people who like things to appear smooth and status quo. Edit to add: I don’t think we know the AI… I mean, I would accept any of the above suggestions! I just kinda think we don’t… I would accept “sibling of Melon and Lemon who unaccountably is not named after a fruit and chose a really strange body/case in order to survive crushing ocean depths” also.
FWIW my theory has always been that Lemon and Melon are part of a set of *color* based names, and it's happenstance that both their names are also fruit names. So the director might be named "Indigo" or "Midnight Blue" or something like that.
And Marten seems utterly non- plussed about the whole affair.
I do think Marten is a bit uncomfortable about the whole situation. I’m sure he understands Claire’s frustration.
Damn, Claire is ANGY
....is Claire going to take the post and be promoted to Director out of sheer spite and rage?
That’s how it happened in the video game “Control.”
Aww I feel so bad for poor Evan 🥺
So do I. Evan was just the final straw but they're going to be the one to blame if Claire doesn't get out of "Bitch Mode" sometime soon.
Definitely in the "I can't believe I flew all the way out here for an interview to go this badly" vibe. I can relate; I once drove for two hours to have an interview so disastrous that it almost ended with both sides calling the police. (After the first utterly miserable hour, they presented me with an NDA. I said I was so disinterested in the job I was leaving instead. They said I couldn't leave until I signed the NDA; I said I was leaving unless they wanted a hostage situation on their hands.) I'll never forget those immortal words: "The candidate is not permitted to end the interview process."
That is terrifying. Geez. Real dystopian shit.
It's the invasion of what is supposed to be her personal space that set her off
I believe Claire may have taught The Voice to Hanners. I'm guessing they at least compared notes.
Not the other way around?
Music starts playing. It's the Muzak version of "Cruel Angel's Thesis."
I missed this one in Mass Effect.
Must be an Easter egg if you choose to add Pte Marten to your party on the citadel out of guilt. He seems like the character you’d hardly ever bring along.
I can hear the missing elevator musak even now, "Da-de-da , de-dum-de-dum-da..."
dum-dum-dum dum-de-da dum-de-da....
So we’re at that Hannelore level of mad where Hanners was afraid her anger face would stay stuck all the way to meeting Hanner’s mom.
I am loving the parallels to that particular arc. Can't wait to see where it goes.
Please tell me the director is Yay!!! Cubetown seems like exactly the kind of hijink they’d get up to and also get a chuckle out of not telling any of the people in their life.
I've been wondering on those lines also
Claire why you surprised
Crushing abyssal depths take FOREVER to get to...
They walk into the office, the chair spins around to reveal the director. Pintsize.
Or Yay. Surprise!
Damn endless loading screens...
Oh, she mad mad.
Oh even worse, she MAD mad.
Evan and Marten just vibing, while Claire is busy fanning the fires of a thousand suns in her fury. This is delightful.
Wonder if there is a sailor/pirate equivalent of the fires of a thousand suns? Winds of a thousand hurricanes? (The storm not the fart after of drinking a thousand hurricane cocktails.)
