Marten's shading is telling the tale.

J
Jim Feldman · December 5, 2022

Not the worst I've seen tatoo'ed across a butt. Could be "Freebird" or "Max load 2"

B
Bill Silvia · December 5, 2022

Imagine having your name tattooed across your butt.

A
Andrew L Butula · December 5, 2022

Maybe it's a nickname? I can't imagine he'd still be Ol' Boaty when he moves on to a different body type.

M
Mad Marie · December 5, 2022

Take some melodramamine, barfy boy.

S
Shane Wegner · December 5, 2022

"A dram is better than a damn!"

U
Ursus Ridens · December 5, 2022

Hey, why should Ol' Boaty give a damn about "real men", being what they are.

U
Ursus Ridens · December 5, 2022

...or what he/she/it is. I just can't get used to using "they are" to refer to one person.

Y
Yelling Bird · December 4, 2022

"And later that day when his lunch he did spray, Came the wreck of the Marten Fitzgerald..."

D
Daniel Drazen · December 4, 2022

Who else thinks Boaty sounds like Quint from "Jaws"?

S
Some Ed · December 4, 2022

That depends. Does Quint sound like KITT from Knight Rider?

L
Leak · December 4, 2022

So is this the real definition of "boatmurdered"?

e
eh eh Ron · December 4, 2022

And we never saw Marten ever again.

B
Brian O. · December 4, 2022

If only.. :p

B
Brian · December 4, 2022

Oh boy 🚩🚩🚩

J
Joseph Bonnar · December 4, 2022

O Boaty.

W
Wayne Farmer · December 4, 2022

What does it say about Cubetown that they subject prospective employees to a conventional boat trip? It just seems low-tech, when a submarine or a hydrofoil would be a lot more comfortable. But maybe it's just a reflection of Cubetown's dysfunctionality that they don't have empathy for the frailties of humans.

J
Joseph Bonnar · December 4, 2022

Mmm, no. I think they did this so that ol Boaty would have a job after being kicked off Station for being space sick. (Hanners named him, btw.)

S
Shane Wegner · December 4, 2022

I spent a week on a yacht liveaboard in the Maldives scuba diving all the amazing reefs. Hard life, I know. Point being, luckily I didn’t get seasick… on the boat that is. Back on solid land though, for the next _48 hours_ my mind was “landsick”, anticipating the sea swells where there weren’t any and giving me the feeling solid rock was gently swaying beneath my feet. I thankfully didn’t barf, but it felt STRANGE.

j
jonesnori · December 4, 2022

Oh, that is odd. Did you look into it at all? Is it common?

Married to the Sea: The Next Generation

A
Ami · December 4, 2022

I'm surprised it took you this long to kill off Marten

D
David Paul · December 4, 2022

I can absolutely relate to Marten. I recently went on a whale watching tour with my girlfriend. I was good for the first 90 minutes or so, but the seas were pretty choppy, and with me darting around trying to see where they would pop up next, I forgot the advice the captain gave us: "if you start feeling queasy, just stop and focus on the horizon for a bit." I also forgot that we had barf bags, but I was quick enough to make it to the rails.

J
Joseph Bonnar · December 4, 2022

Please don't hate me. The time I went whale watching the sea was dead calm, and we found a large pod of whales, one of whom broached (is that the term?) not 10 yards from the boat and got everybody on the boat soaked. THEN it did it a second time. :)

B
Bagge · December 4, 2022

I feel like Marten will fit right in in the corperate culture of cubetown

S
Sleepy John · December 4, 2022

No one has ever died of seasickness. No one's ever been that lucky.

T
Todd Ellner · December 4, 2022

Mmmm, no. People have dehydrated and been unable to keep down enough liquid for survival

O
OldGoat · December 4, 2022

I agree with Marten, air legs are NO substitute for sea legs. I've been a little airsick, but I was please-dear-Gawd-just-kill-me-so-I-can-go-to-hell-it-can't-be-any-worse-than-this seasick.

M
Matthew Van Gangelen · December 4, 2022

I mean, he’s not wrong.

M
Mike O'Dell · December 4, 2022

In my callow youth, I got hideously seasick on a surfboard in the Gulf of Mexico on the south shore of Galveston TX. I was so sick I could not drag the board out of the water and back to the rental stand. i later came to understand the experience as one of those, like really bad flu, where death denied was the worst part.

D
Daniel S · December 4, 2022

I feel Marten deeply here.

P
Pejo · December 4, 2022

I applaud 1. how frame 2 looks like Ol' Boaty is making sound effects as he travels to amuse himself, which I would absolutely do were I a boat; 2. Jeph's selection of color for Marten's face; and 3. how Moray has cleavage now in the life vest.

P
PixelThis · December 4, 2022

I"m thinking frame 2 is the sounds Marten's making as he loses his lunch...

C
Chris Reed (aka Animeraider) · December 4, 2022

He was from California before THE RITUAL. He wouldn't have gotten seasick before...

B
Bill Silvia · December 4, 2022

Do Californians spend much time on boats? I mostly think of it as a New England thing for some reason.

J
Jeremy Westerfield · December 4, 2022

Hey, there... Barfy Boy... Throwing up your lunch and wailing so!

S
Shane Wegner · December 4, 2022

Whaling so?!?!

M
MikeT · December 4, 2022

There had to be one

J
Joseph Bonnar · December 4, 2022

Had I been on that boat, TWO.

K
Ken Carlile · December 4, 2022

it me.

s
skinnybdink · December 4, 2022

what a bold exciting unexpected way to get rid of your former main character this comic is incredible!

S
Shane Wegner · December 4, 2022

Throwing people overboard to their watery grave is rude and they’re in Canada.

B
BobC · December 4, 2022

"Melodramatic" is a tautology. I don't think it's possible to be simultaneously mellow and dramatic. But Marten seems to be giving it a good try!

M
Matthew Van Gangelen · December 4, 2022

Melodramatic from melodrama. Melos (ancient Greek meaning song. Also where we get melody.) Drame (French). The original melodramas all had music.

J
J.R. Murdock · December 4, 2022

Barfy McBarfface

J
Jeremy Westerfield · December 4, 2022

I approve whole-barfedly.

J
John Doty · December 4, 2022

I really like the wind-swept hair on the two of them…

C
Captain Button · December 4, 2022

Of course, "This one's weak." is only the start, Cubetown is an endless succession of deathmatchs to TOS Star Trek music.

S
Shane Wegner · December 4, 2022

Five quatloos on the newcomer.

J
Jeff · December 4, 2022

Marten died on the way back to his home planet.

d
darklion · December 4, 2022

It me

P
Peter McDevitt · December 4, 2022

Marty keeps this up he's gonna be the new broken man on the Halifax pier.

E
EnterTheHero · December 4, 2022

I understood this reference!

o
onecontinuoussigh · December 4, 2022

I'm in another country right now on vacation, but I'm holed up in my room with Montezuma's Revenge, and am weirdly grateful seeing poor Martin in a similar boat as me.

U
Ursus Ridens · December 4, 2022

You're in a sentient if callous boat? Wicked cool? (I hope, though, that, er, everything comes out OK.)

E
Erin street · December 4, 2022

Claire needs a real man. A sea dog, an old mariner, maybe ol'boatey

S
Simon · December 4, 2022

Who would win? Super cool robot Boaty vs One Barfy Boy

D
Dean Reilly · December 4, 2022

Just as long as he did it downwind.

B
Bill Silvia · December 4, 2022

Now headbutt Ol' Boaty in the junk!

a
allanfranta · December 4, 2022

I've seen men so seasick they wished they were dead; but the doc had the cure, and it was the type of medicine delivery that was nether a shot or a patch and couldn't be thrown up.

j
jonesnori · December 4, 2022

Okay, I give up. What was the cure?

L
Lucas Werkmeister · December 4, 2022

from that day, Marten was known as Ol’ Barfy

N
NinjaZaku · December 4, 2022

Damn Claire no mercy

B
Bill Silvia · December 4, 2022

No mercy would have been to agree with him.

M
Michelle Harvey · December 4, 2022

the worst part is, they haven't even left the harbor yet!

C
Clifton Royston · December 4, 2022

I have a friend who will start getting seasick on a large ship still tied up to the pier in harbor. Just knowing there's water underneath there is enough to do it.

M
Miyaa · December 4, 2022

I’ve decided that Boaty is voiced by William Daniels, the original voice actor of KITT from Knight Rider.

Z
Zak Reichle · December 4, 2022

I kind of wanna see the Ol Boaty x KITT hybrid

T
Tudza · December 4, 2022

Let the boy ralph in peace.

M
Michael Boettger · December 4, 2022

Lovely shade of green, Marten.

T
Ting · December 4, 2022

Marten's face looks like a chromatic average between Claire and Moray's face

G
Grace Serenity · December 4, 2022

Claire is not having ANY of his drama!

M
Michael Boettger · December 4, 2022

Yup. Note the patented "annoyed Claire " face.

T
Tannerbot · December 4, 2022

Poor boy has been horked on so many times, he's allowed to do it to somebody else once.

M
Michael Boettger · December 4, 2022

Back in Northampton, Faye's ears are burning.
