Moray is chill af. What is the deal?

T
Todd Ellner · November 26, 2022

Moray has demonstrated all the chill of a hummingbird on cocaine

C
Carl Rigney · November 26, 2022

Moray-21 seems excited. Is anyone else getting that vibe?

U
Ursus Ridens · November 26, 2022

Claire has gotten preternaturally calm.

Moray has a reversed personality.

Moray gets better and better! I still think Cubetown would be a nightmare place to work, but any excuse to see more Moray shenanigans works for me.

S
Stephen Wells · November 24, 2022

There are a lot of things which are fun in fiction and would be terrible in real life, Cubetown is absolutely in that category.

I just might have a new favorite character.

M
Mad Marie · November 24, 2022

“Welcome to Cubetown! It has been [ -002 ] days since a fatal accident.”

M
Miyaa · November 24, 2022

More like -e days. If you know, you know.

S
Shane Wegner · November 24, 2022

I also wanna know if she has one of those armored processor cores in there somewhere, or if her whole body is an info storage lattice that is distributed enough that partial damage could be reconstructed without major loss.

S
Stephen Wells · November 24, 2022

Probably distributed with constant remote backup - if anything terminal happened to the goo body she would download into the next vat. Oh no THAT's why she's Moray-21, she's counting instances and is very accident-prone. That's also why Cubetown has the Do Not Explode sign. Oh NO.

S
Shane Wegner · November 24, 2022

Panel 3 is helping me picture her head rotating 360, since she’s not constrained by a skeleton. And maybe instead of turning around, her body just kind of morphs in a new direction?

C
Carl Fink · November 24, 2022

She turned her head inside the exterior layer of goo. Her "hair" buns are now on the front and back instead of the sides of her head.

Y
YsabetJustYsabet · November 24, 2022

With a heart made of Flubber / Or industrial rubber, / That's our Moray...

B
Bill Silvia · November 24, 2022

Was Moray mostly an excuse to draw a nude AI?

S
Stephen Wells · November 24, 2022

Like Jeph would need an excuse for that :) we've already seen quite a lot of several other chassis types :)

J
Julia Allen-Hesse · November 24, 2022

One of these days I'll get sick of these derpy manic pixie robots, but today's not that day. [insert Moray pun]

C
Clifton Royston · November 24, 2022

"Guess I picked the wrong day to quit manic pixie robots!" [hugs a Moray]

F
Fart Captor · November 24, 2022

WAIT I UNDERSTAND NOW Moray <b>HAD</b> to be made of slime because her enthusiasm would result in too many injuries if she had any kinda ridgid structure 🤯

Z
Zak Reichle · November 24, 2022

So Moray is padded for everyone's safety? In my mind the director is already basically willy Wonka summoning Claire to take over (lead a department) at Cubetown (toy factory). However that'd make Moray... Who Arthur Slugworth... ?

r
runrin · November 24, 2022

i love her so much

B
Bagge · November 24, 2022

Claire's babysitting duty starts now

P
Pete · November 24, 2022

She doesn't have eyelids. Her whole eyeball squishes flat, probably? I chose to believe her teeth are squishy as well. For reasons. Ahem.

C
Creeperkry · November 24, 2022

If Moray is translucent, why can't we still see her eyeballs when she closes her eyes?

K
KiTA · November 24, 2022

Cause drawing her translucent would be really hard. He'd basically have to not draw her in any scene until after the inking / coloring stage. Better to reserve that for gags and the occasional pinup or what have you.

D
Douglas E. Smith · November 24, 2022

Woob

S
SpookyPenguin · November 24, 2022

can AI's be on the spectrum too I'm detecting ADHD vibes from Moray, or am I just catching up because I was hyperfocused somewhere else.

S
Some Ed · November 24, 2022

Are there any AI characters we have thus far seen who do not have any on spectrum traits? That said, the humans in QC tend to have a certain amount of them as well. To be clear, I'm not trying to say that they're all "on spectrum", except in the same sense that everyone is technically somewhere between (inclusive) zero autism traits and every autism trait. But it does feel to me like the AIs are generally between the half way point and the all the way point, and the humans aren't that far behind. (Disclaimer: I'm not a mental health professional. I'm also aware that there's a bunch of spectrum features that can be difficult to depict in a web comic.)

K
KiTA · November 24, 2022

I wonder if what we're seeing as an excitable, er, lets call it "childlike" personality is actually something deeper. Like, what if Moray is post-singularity (likely, but it's still early post-singularity in QC) and having trouble dumbing down her communication skills to human standard? She seems excitable and always go go go because she's thinking several hundred times faster than a human and it's hard to slow herself down.

C
Chris Olstrom · November 24, 2022

Relatable.

M
Mike O'Dell · November 24, 2022

I’m reminded of Dr. Richard Daystrom’s comments when challenged with a question about what became of M3 and M4, the precursors to the precocious M5. “They were not completely successful.” And the line from the great Deano Martino Italiano classic: “What bites off your thumb like a big juicy plum? That’s a Moray!”

C
Constantine Hannaher · November 24, 2022

KIRK: I'm curious, Doctor. Why is it called M-5 and not M-1? DAYSTROM: Well, you see, the multitronic units one through four were not entirely successful. This one is. M-5 is ready to take control of the ship. (via http://www.chakoteya.net/StarTrek/53.htm)

K
KiTA · November 24, 2022

Oh hey, panel 4: She can deform / shapechange. At least a little. So she's not as solid as a human/traditional AI.

Z
Zak Reichle · November 24, 2022

I wonder if she's a non-newtonian fluid, like Oobleck. On the surface I think that's what makes the most sense.

Z
Zak Reichle · November 24, 2022

I never expected to relate so much with Moray of all the characters, but she just keeps getting better. More Moray! Mor²ay!

A
Andy · November 24, 2022

Want to hug please

C
CorruptDropbear · November 24, 2022

I think she may need a little bit of underclocking and undervolting.

M
Mad Marie · November 24, 2022

Or perhaps she’s just amped up.

C
Captain Button · November 24, 2022

She reserved a personality, but maybe it is backordered?

B
Bill Marcum · November 24, 2022

She called herself Moray-21, so obviously there could be at least 20 others.

C
Christopher Burke · November 24, 2022

I wasn't sure she was excited until the bottom text confirmed it

S

D

Only way first panel would have been better is Moray was taller and she shoved her boobs into Clair's face...(I think both would have enjoyed it :3)

S
Stephen Wells · November 24, 2022

Millefeuille already got her ass rebuilt because she wanted more wobble. If she meets Moray she's going to want a full-body upgrade. And then Brun will never need a pillow, or a mattress, ever again. Ah, happy thoughts :)

J
Jay · November 24, 2022

I'm assuming there's only spaces between the words to make it easier to read.

S
Stephen Wells · November 24, 2022

Fun fact - the gaps between syllables are usually the same length regardless of word boundaries - it's our brains filling in non-existent pauses because we know the grammar of the language. That's why learning to hear another language is difficult at first, you have to re-learn how to parse the audio stream into separate words. But separately to that, yes, Moray is basically on fast-forward here :)

A
Andje Lewkowicz-Lalonde · November 24, 2022

As we meet more AI's I'm interested that your concept of an emergent AI phenomena could emerge... with no malice. Don't believe it myself, as these AI's don't seem to be in any way confronting their partial-at-least immortality. But maybe that wouldn't matter to a being who wasn't mortal? But they are at least integrated into a society of mortals. And they are a relatively recent addition to the society... At least I care about the consistency of the lore :p.

C
Chauncey · November 24, 2022

I would say AIs degenerate over time and eventually fail, even if their chassis is brand new. Probably at a rate similar to the life span of a human. A knife can only be sharpened so many times, ya know?

Y
Yelling Bird · November 24, 2022
