Finger Guns
Yay should not be allowed to do finger guns

I am very glad that Elliot is well-acquainted with Yay's manner of speaking/being at this exact moment, because otherwise it would be disastrous.
This is just delightful 😌
I’m somewhat expecting next week to start with Yay complaining to Rocko, “…and then she physically threw us out of the bakery and left a footprint on our backside!”
No riddle to test resolve, no middle it’s best dissolved. What gets sorted out last of all gets solved. It gets solved.
love the attempt, Yay. Having been in Elliot's position, it will likely not change much. But appreciable attempt. (on another note, some have recorded your glorious exit from twitter, Jeph. Beautiful. 5 stars, standing ovation.)
Smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth.
See Renée's expression? Our multiply-embodied friend is in trouble?
Yay is very probably in for a well deserved tongue lashing, at the very least. But, of course, we won't know because... Cliff Hang er.
I've noticed several comments about how Yay got their name; I thought it might be nice to link to the comic in question. Also Melon is, of course, delightful. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4042
I thought some of the previous strips were especially on-point, given that Jeph has taken up Elon-sniping as a hobby. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4038
Yeah, this set up for Yaay realising she’s inneffectual /and/ also can’t use her fallback of “F it; brain deep dive to force my way” is going to have a fun pay off.
*they But also Yay's had a lot of revelations about the limits of their powers, how they should be used, etc... Honestly this almost feels like a regression after all their lovely character growth -- like their swanning in to help out Bubbles. But we'll see how this pans out
Congrats on the Twitter ban, Jeph. Elon just couldn't handle the fun.
I facepalmed the second I saw the first panel.
Not even I have managed to be quite that clueless. I've certainly pulled off some socially cluenessness in my day, but not this. To be fair, I was accused of this very thing, but at least one of the individuals present was witness to my not actually doing this very thing.
Yay should *definitely* be allowed to do finger guns. They have the moves.
I worry that Yay using finger guns might accidentally result in obliteration by space laser.
Yay: Points for trying. Massive improvement from the first showing. Much better than just telling Eliot to get a grip. Yay Newfriend has a lot to learn about humanity on a personal level.
Elliot's expression didn't move at all. He knows better than to make sudden movements around Yay
More likely not even his subconscious mind has any idea what expression to show so it just didn't change.
Yay does finger guns, forgets they actually shoot powerful lasers, Renee is obliterated, Elliot is sad. ~<3
Renee's expressions in this are the best.
"oh, I'm observing" - great line. picturing the body language beyond the frame. heh. hehheh.
as someone with anxiety and a whole lot of other shit, let me say this approach can actually work (though i don't think it will, and it usually doesn't). the whole executive dysfunction and anxiety merry-go-round in your brain makes a lot of things very difficult, including deciding to get help and then actually getting it. Yay could probably 'organise' an immediate therapist appointment for Elliot and low-key bully him into going, taking over many of the difficult steps of getting there himself. then again, this will probably backfire and make everything worse instead 🙃
Yay, you have somehow managed to create a perfect alloy of omniscient and clueless.
Final panel Yay desperately needs a beret and a Parisian sidewalk cafe to hang out in. I mean, look at them. Look!
I've known people who had the exact same approach to "problem solving" as Yay. Also, Bubbles and Faye probably get someone every week who wants literal fingerguns installed.
Yay should definitely not be allowed to wield those finger-guns. The chaotic, naive, genderless bi energy is far too charming for mere mortals so be subjected to.
One one hand, I think it might work just because of how little Eliot expected something like this. One the other hand, IF it work Yay will be so completely insufferable that I almost wish it won't
But finger gun face was perfection!
I think the subtitle at the bottom right should have followed past, similar comics: “Yay no.”
That this is the therapeutic approach from the combined access of human knowledge is kind of depressing
I feel like it's the therapeutic approach from easy access to the Internet and an unrealistically high confidence the first information found is correct. At least, I've seen this kind of approach recommended a lot on the Internet, to a sufficient extent that there's not always someone who has the time to assert that it's unwise, and most of the time there's no one to explain why it's unwise.
♥♥♥ Renée in 3rd panel ... "sure, I'll watch this crash and burn ..."
The thing is, Elliot could 100% be bullied into getting treatment for his anxiety. Yay's approach is not per se invalid.
Getting bullied into getting treatment can increase the amount of treatment needed / reduce the effectiveness of said treatment. I'm not saying that there necessarily was a better way that would have worked, but in general it's best to explore those first.
Here's hoping Clinton called ahead to warn them.
My ghad. I didnt know someone can be so bad at a thing. Then Yay happened.
I had an inkling. I mean, back in the day I stumbled into making a similar attempt to help someone with a similar issue, and only really didn't fail as hard because I didn't have the confidence and I had a lot more apparent actual concern for the person. Those points were explicitly stated as mitigating factors in the rant I was given by the Renee counterpart.
With Yay's capabilities they could literally absorb all of the available therapy literature in a few seconds but instead their ego makes them think they can just wing it. I'm glad it's just in human relations where they choose to do that and not something like developing nanotechnology...
I get the feeling they might be involved in the origin of Cubetown.
I worry that Yay's "finger guns" are not just duplicates, but enhancements, of Pintsize's original chassis laser...
While I do think Yay with finger guns is adorkable, as my uncle once said before wading into similar drama, "This will not end pretty."
Unfortunately, we humans usually take pride in being help-resistant.
They are my favorite character today. I’m dying laughing at the finger gunz and the whole bluntness of this interaction. I’m waiting for the Elliott.exe to catch up to what just happened to see if crushingDespair.exe fires or if it’s ohOKsure.exe that takes over
Yay really seems to have decided that interpersonal interactions were beneath them as an excuse not to dip into the complex calculations and reactions involved, and that's painfully real.
Yay should solve problems all the time
they tried that when they gave away all their money to charity
Yay needs to do finger guns MORE.
The only way to stop a bad guy with finger guns is with good guys with finger guns
Where’s that stupid big red button when you need it?
I think Elliot's brain is stuck in the spinny loading wheel.
Elliot has not dissolved into a quivering mass. Mission accomplished.
I think he's stunned and he's going to react negatively.
Yay took "Clear is kind" a little too literally while listening to Brene Brown podcasts.
I mean it could have gone worse. At least Yay was direct and to the point.
everything Yay says is correct the delivery though....
yay should absolutely be allowed to do finger guns. and is delightful indeed.
Yay is summoning their inner Cal Carver.
Whew! Problem solved. Job well done!
My worry is that yay fingerguns might actually be functional.... Assuming that, just having them fire bullets or something would be too mundane. So what effect would a yaygun produce, and would Station want to swap out some of his orbital bombardment suites for one?
Yay: "Functioning hard or hardly functional?"
Yay IS delightful.
Also Renee's shade? Best shade.
i don’t think Yay’s technically allowed to do anything
One of those debatable things. Yay seems to be using Roko as a standin for Jiminy Cricket these days, but really hasn't gotten a handle on that whole "personal responsibility" thing yet.
Interesting. It's the first time I see someone open an eye to wink instead of the other way around
I'm confused why everyone thinks this is a bad idea. Sure, Yay is doing it in a perfect dick kind of way, but seriously, they're not wrong. If Elliot doesn't get some counseling, he's going to sabotage any relationship he gets into.
From that point of view it does make sense. But people don't work like that. Elliot has an anxiety disorder that gets in first before he can control it. This is not as simple as it looks from the outside.
It's amazing how someone can be so utterly wrong about doing something, that they might actually confuse the target enough to get a "sure, why not?" result.
I don't want to be the one to tell Yay not to do fingerguns.
Andy Partridge can tell them to melt the finger guns.
Elliot: I think we're about done with your Hercules time, Yay,
I can only hope and pray that Renee explains to Yay the folly of their ways. In detail. With bullet points.
Aaayyyyyy!
Somewhere out there is a Yay with military-grade fingerguns
Even worse: Somewhere out there is a Pintsize clone with military grade fingerguns.
Yay, for the love of all that is sentient, you're not helping! But at least they're being so over the top as to not cause Elliot more trauma
Yet. (Actually, I can see this being so ridiculously unhelpful that it actually winds up helping. Like, Eliot says to himself, 'Oh god, fine, I'll go to therapy if you promise never to try to help again.')
A swarm of networked AI processors, and the best surname they could come up with is "Newfriend". This whole comic could easily have been titled "Adorable Morons". Yay fits right in.
I mean, the entire name is a reference to when somebody else said "Yay! New friend!" It's not as if they were already called "Yay" and later decided that "Newfriend" sounded like a real name that people are called.
comic over, everything solved to satisfaction
Perhaps Yay will have their problems solved instead.
This attitude of Yay’s reminds me so much of Melon with a moustache.
It's probably why they get along so well!
I'm totally blanking on who gave Yay their new name, but guessing by the surname Newfriend, my guess would be Melon?
Correct
Yay should only ever communicate in finger guns
I'm here for it, as you've basically invented finger guns semaphore. And I'm pretty sure Yay already knows semaphore.
Algorithms solve everything!
Finger Guns solve everything!
My wife was a great social worker, but I can't help think she could've been so much better if all her sessions were full of IF/THEN direct orders.
All of life's problems, simplified!
But Yay and Renee rhyme so well!
Yay, do take note of the look on Renee's face. It is not a happy or at all friendly look. While you do that, do consider the structural strength of your chassis and what kind of damage she could do.
Sadly, Renee does not have the ability to set people on fire with her mind. And the harpoon is back in the apartment.
Honestly, that went better than I thought it would...
Well, the issue is clearly not resolved yet. The cliff hanger is quite tense.
Renee get the harpoon.
Yay can and indeed should do finger guns OR winking, but I absolutely forbid them from doing both at once ever again
Spookybot is SO BAD at this and it's amazing. They're just... not even close. Renee doesn't even have to actually facepalm and we all know what she's thinking.
Understandable. Yay is still babby, hopefully they have a learning experience from this and grow as a spookybot. :D
Secret spy AI Yay Newfriend, hacker of mainframes, solver of problems, petter of cats.
This like how you cure people with depression by saying "Just don't be depressed anymore!" it's GENIUS!!
gee i wonder if i could cure my executive dysfunction by just saying "do it!"
Yay is "finger gun" energy.
Didn't they temporarily remove Faye's ability to walk once? The Fingerguns are serious.
Yes, when Yay showed up at Coffee of Dume, they prevented Faye's legs from working, and put Dora and Emily out like lights, reviving Emily to go spelunking in Bubble's core.
I love “Yay Newfriend”, though I also like “Yay Fingerguns” as a last name for her.
Yay uses they/them pronouns
What could go wrong?
It's like watching a train actively leaving the tracks.
The expressions in panels 3 and 5 are *chef's kiss*
Fingerguns are great, but not for Yay. . o O (That... just... INCOMPATIBLE IMAGERY.)
Yay Oy Vey
Oy Yay, in fact :)
Yay: "Stop it. Get some help."
Oh god is this the cliffhanger one
'Fraid so.
with the tact and finesse of a steamroller
Yay is the emotional version of Crushbot.
When's roko going to walk in
Roko's been there the whole time, sniffing the pumpernickel off camera.
I like how Eliot's expression never changes
How funny would it be if that actually worked, though?
This kind of "Tough Love" may be exactly what Elliot needs
Somebody is drunk on humanity.
Omg they actually did it
oh they're about to learn some hard lessons about the difference between knowledge and wisdom huh
I've made the "high INT low WIS character build" comment a dozen times about Yay's antics and they *still* haven't put any points into WIS. And they never will :)
My anxiety is so high just from thinking how this will go that i cannot read this
But at the same time you know it will be so spectacularly bad that you cannot *not* read it, either...
Yay Dorkfriend
YAY FINGERGUNS for all we know they could still be at elliots flat right now
I wonder if Yay's bodies coordinate their outfits to match, or if they intentionally avoid that 🤔
