The Three Great Evil Yokai are the three strongest Yokai of Shinto Mythology, consisting of Tamamo-no-Mae, Shuten-Doji and Otakemaru, Tamamo-no-Mae being a Kitsune, and the latter two being Oni / Kijin. Their power is beyond most normal Demons (save for Archdemons) and rivals the Gods themselves. Like the Gods, they demonstrate command over nature itself. Therefore, they are also christened as Demon Gods by some, the same title given to the 72 Pillars of Goetia. They christen themselves kindred allies and brothers-in-arms to an almost spiritual level, despite them existing in different eras in Japan and never actually meeting till the present time.
Despite their power, they inevitably had rivals in their era: Tamamo-no-Mae had Taikobou, Shuten-Doji had Minamoto-no-Raikou, and Otakemaru had Sakamoue no Tamuramaro, and their battles would eventually result in their sealing and defeat. Yet, none refuse to go down that easily. Their demonic will, power and essence still linger within the divine blades that seal them, and those lacking a strong will and pure heart will be possessed by them, should they unsheathe, sometimes even just hold any of the swords. And even if access to the swords were barred and sealed under lock and key, its presence, the trace amounts of malice emanating from it will inevitably tempt someone into seizing them.
The Shinto temple holding the swords, despite their best efforts, are unable to exorcise or purify the blades, nor prove strong enough to either resist temptation to grasp them for too long, much less resist their wills being overcome by the Yokai for that matter. Stopping those corrupted by the blades required great amounts of effort, if the hosts did not simply give out from the strain.
Eventually, the swords managed to lull even the otherwise pure-hearted Risers, possessing them and synchronising their essence with the power of the Risers, making them Riser deities as well, and also granting them the ability to finally use their full power in centuries. The temple could not stop them this time, and they fled with their new hosts, to usher in a new age of Demonkind.
Some clashes with the Yokai have shown that re-sheathing the swords, or brief bursts of will from the possessed, can return the possessed back to normal, if for a short while.
