I remember only getting to catch this randomly on HBO and I didn’t realize all “the good stuff” had already happened. I was super zoned in on the tv, expecting one of the girls to be showering and got greeted to Bacon’s dong. Also watched all of Meet Joe Black expect the first 5 mins, waiting to see when Brad Pitt would get hit by a bus like I heard about. I was bad with timing.
Just chiming in on the "warfighter" talk. I was in the Marines from '99 (peacetime!) until 2004 (as soon as I could get out). I did a deployment to Iraq for the invasion in 2003. I was an infantry scout with 2nd LAR (8 wheeled armored vehicle). That's not to brag or ask for platitudes. Just to establish my bonafides. So warfighter is a term we'd use with each other and with internal manuals and documents. Like one of the books I had to read for promotion was the Warfighting Manual. And like most of us were down to earth enough to know how corny all the oorah shit was. So we'd use it tongue in cheek calling each other "warfighter" or "devil dog" or whatever. But using it externally or with civilians is goofy as shit. Hegseth is dick-hole and the whole Dept of War shit is so fucking stupid. -sent from Americaticut, New America (formerly known as Connecticut New England)
They pull it off. Voice was Harvey Keitel from Reservoir dogs Stanger.
Growing up in the 90s, I got my brother and sister calling guys in socks/sandals German tourists, and I thought I’d made it up
Rogers - you should check out Gatorland in Orlando. My wife’s from there and every year we’ve to visit family, I’ve gone. The animals are well looked after and the people watching’s great. They have a strict no kids on shoulders policy.
Same guy that made Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (great flick) and also The Borrower, not a great flick but at one point the weird alien main character walks around with a dog's head on and fucks up a shitty punk band so maybe he has the juice after all
I just wanna meet the dude.
Winked. The baby winked at Ralph hahaha sorry to be that fucking guy
At the time, the hot girl-on-girl scene in the pool was everything for yours truly, and subsequently memory-holed the rest of the movie.
I paused when it said The End to read about the movie and then someone commented "make sure you stick around", almost missed that whole part
My third favorite Bond is now Bronson.
RIP moneypenny if Bronson is Bond
"Nobody buys this trash hope Nolan paid you well because nobody will ever believe you again" gotta be one of the craziest takes ever. This pod is my only source of truth
Hope you got paid well
Here’s a little movie trivia about this film: there is a pretty famous scene that takes place in a pool
For more 90's Florida Noir there is the thoroughly average Blood and Wine with a pre-fame J.Lo. and Jack Nicholson; and the slightly better China Moon, with a young Benicio Del Toro and smokeshow Madeline Stowe. These overlap with their discussion of "sweaty" movies. Anyone else got any recommendations?
There should be some Elmore Leanord ones but I can’t think of any that fit exactly
I saw two of my teachers drinking and smoking cigars at a Bills' tailgate. Blew my teenage brain lol
GO HOME BENNY! We grew up being told it stood for Bayonne Elizabeth Newark and New York. So it was also racist and classist coded.
I grew up near the Jersey Shore (LBI area) and we used Benny for New Yorkers and North Jersey people, though I never heard the acronym before. Shoobies were anyone who looked like they didn't belong at the beach (wearing socks with sandals/not tan or farmers tan). All definitely class coded
Another Action Boyz movie with Morphine on the soundtrack. God, I saw this in the theater with my ex wife when I was 23. Didn’t remember a thing about this flick.
was it on a Thurdsay a Thursday? BTW, what was the other soundtrack they were on?
My Dad was fortunate to avoid the Vietnam draft by enlisting in the Army National Guard. (I think he had a letter of recommendation from my grandfather, a state rep at the time, that helped, and a cousin that was already an officer or something). He was in an artillery unit, and I think he had already been to business school, so his mission was clerking and filing papers. And when a call went out they were forming a computer unit, he applied and got into that (artillery was loud, he didn't care for it). He will accept that what he did was military service, and I think he is proud, to a point, of getting through that to get through that period of time (and acknowledges the privilege of what being able to opt into that got him out of the risk pool of) . He never calls himself a veteran or describes himself as having served in Vietnam, as he never got anywhere near there. He rarely ever brings it up, outside of immediate family, or in service of a funny story about how poorly he fit in there, other than when it was time to do office or computer things. This my long way of saying that I think he would agree with you that 'warfighter' is way too broad and inaccurate of a term to cover all the different ways one can serve.
I do love that Stanger describes a Debbie Does Dallas scenario with the weight and reverence of James Lipton recounting a guest's past work.
So as per my usual MO I’ve been relistening to older eps and just finished Carlito’s Way. While discussing the movie The Boyz bring up the insufferable movie podcast hosted by Adam Goldsmith and it reminded me of one I remember being quite funny which is his attempt to interview Bobcat Goldthwaite. It’s supposed to be about Bob’s then new movie God Bless America but Goldsmith keeps asking him questions about the talking horse movie he did Hot To Trot. Bob got so pissed off and it’s pretty funny http://www.theqandapodcast.com/2012/05/bobcat-goldthwait-god-bless-america-q.html?m=1
Anyone watched any of the three sequels this movie had
I say teeva but having friends who work for the brand it is supposed to be pronounced Te-Va
there is no going back once you feel the rush of that long e
Crap I accidentally watched Charlie Sheen come out to pitch
Another fun Matt Dillon movie: Over the Edge - fun teen crime drama about kids who have been pushed OVER THE EDGE. One of the few movies where teens are realistically represented.
Very good movie, and supposedly Dillon was discovered while he was sitting in high school detention?
The image of Dillon getting filthy and pouring the champagne on Richards is etched in my mind forever
I worked for EMS in 1998-2000. After school/summer job. I was fired for telling the punchline to the Kids in hall sketch the “Running F-word” with Scott Thompson. I was mad at the time, but see it from my lesbian managers perspective now.
I remember seeing this when it came out… totally forgot it took place in Florida and completely forgot that Bill Murray was in it! I might have been distracted by things!
Welp - quality cinema - got myself a new fav
I was ten years old when this came out and my mom’s boyfriend wanted to go see it so bad. Instead, we watched Man in the Iron Mask (Leo DiCaprio).
Hey Action Boyz and listeners! My feature film “On Borrowed Time” that I originally shot 20 years ago in Louisville, Kentucky, sadly abandoned but finally got my shit together, shot the ending last year and finally finished editing it, is playing at the TCL Chinese Theatre 6 within Ovation Hollywood September 14th at 12pm for the Indiewood Film Festival. I shot it with no crew and no budget like Robert Rodriguez’s “El Mariachi” but also star in it. I also gained and lost 80 pounds for the role!! I hope you locals can come by and see it! It’s also playing in Las Vegas September 11th at the Las Vegas Premiere Film Festival at the Galaxy Theaters!! Here are the trailers for it!!! https://youtu.be/Dk4nFx0cTlo?is=ZsMVrR2WTi5654uP https://youtu.be/qoSRUl7ie20?is=ay-5806S7Wxi1RHn
Congrats
Rodgers bringing up the burned kid, makes me think we’ve either seen the same kid in Florida, or there were more in the 90s. If that is the case, what was happening to kids back then that would cause them to be caught, and scarred in such a way? Because it feels like I don’t see kids like that anymore today.
I am hoping for a new tier where we learn about Stanger’s paper plane recipe.
This podcast is dedicated to a genre whose heyday is long past so it's rather poignant that they are also covering a neo-noir erotic thriller. At least Hollywood is still churning out Jason Statham and Gerard Butler action programmers. Movies like Wild Things are dead and buried today. I loved Bill Murray's performance as a sleazy ambulance chaser who is revealed to be fully in on what is happening. His other work with John McNaughton is well worth tracking down. I'm sure that most people here would have seen Mad Dog and Glory. But Speaking of Sex of sex is an underseen comedy where Murray and Cathrine O'Hara play very well off each other.
How is this episode not over 3 hours? How much of Stanger did you have to cut from this episode?
His mom is listening bro!
Took my high school girlfriend to see this. Didn’t go great.
I once brought a girl I was super into to “The Road”. Didn’t go great!
I used to have a VHS of Empire Strikes Back recorded off The Movie Channel and a trailer for The Flamingo Kid played before it started. I've seen that trailer 200 times. And eventually watched the movie.
Expecting a very normal comment section
WE'RE GONNA GO NUTS IN THERE!
