Gabrus wants Leguizamo in a big movie assemble cast. Nolan gives us The Odyssey 👍🏼
I don’t recall mention of Spawn the movie but I do remember from Dave Cullen’s excellent Columbine that Klebold and Harris loved Natural Born Killers, Lost Highway, Desperado- this was a great episode, thanks
The Last of the Finest might be the perfect movie
They originally had a puppet for Malbolgia and it looked a million times better. Google it!
It still looks like shit though
daayummmn
Movie was so much worse than I remembered, and I remembered it being bad. First time I've ever started a movie over with the commentary track because of how terrible it was, just to see what they said, and it's an absolute shitshow. It's the director, the VFX head (Spaz) and Todd McFarlane. Director was combative right off the bat, and they got wildly racist talking about casting "Todd wanted Terry to be white because we had too many black people in the cast, but we did audition plenty of blacks for the role"
This episode got me through an unexpected late night drive, I always have a great time listening. Thank you
The prayers of Action Boyz do get answered https://youtu.be/V_g_Ut0jO-0?si=FE_OGWKmwsjOPILL
When ABZ name dropped the VFX guy nicknamed Spaz it reminded me of the doc he’s featured in called Jurassic Punk. You guys seen it? Think it’s still on Tubi. Worth checking out.
Was just relistening to the Lawnmower Man episode, and the topic of suits came up in that one as well, one mentioned in that one that didn't make the list this time was the Still suits from Dune.
I remember kind of liking it and thinking the cape around the motorcycle was cool at the time.
that’s awesome
John Leguizamo is on the criterion closet today… he didn’t choose Spawn.
In the comic Spawn comes back from Hell as a white man, and he's horrified by it. For obvious reasons they steered away from this and decided to make him David Firth's Burnt Face Man instead. This is my important IMDb trivia contribution.
Stanger is correct: Batman uses a machine gun in Batman V Superman. He has machine guns on the Batmobile and then he uses an M60 to shoot KGBeast when he rescues Martha Kent. He also has a machine gun in the future sequence with Joker and whoever else the fuck was with him in the Oscar winning film, Zach Snyder’s Justice League. I hate that I know all that.
This for sure belongs on the free feed
Of all episodes to hear from stanger gorgon, surely this would have been it
During their discussion of "Heaven and Hell shit" in comics I was reminded how, for a brief spell, the Punisher himself got involved in some Heaven and Hell shit during the 90's where he became some avenging angel (or whatever :). This was after his initial heyday but before Garth Ennis took over, and approximately 0 people liked it.
You had Constantine/Hellblazer, Preacher, Ghost Rider, some Sandman stuff (Lucifer is a big part of it) dealing directly with Heaven and Hell, and then characters like Nightcrawler and Daredevil who are explicitly Catholic despite living in a universe with Galactuses and whatnot.
This movie has one of the silliest IMDB Trivia entries I've seen: "This film share several similarities with RoboCop (1987). Both films show the main character working for a government agency. Both films show the wrongful, violent, and excruciating death of the main character. Both films show that the main character's death robbed him of his family and normal life. Both films show the main character eventually seeking revenge for his death. Both films show the rampant city corruption that the main character must contend with. Both films show the advancement of technology that serves a huge purpose for the entire story." 17 People thought this was helpful 24 People thought this wasn't helpful
Now see I found that helpful
The bad guy agency is called Asics, like the shoe company?

https://youtu.be/P3zdMNz1uK4?is=83WvY_pNurXu8kdv The Siskel and Ebert review where Gene gets so mad at everything Rodger says and doesn't give him an inch is one of my favorites from the show.
Ebert being wowed by all the Hell stuff is hilarious.
I must be Spawn / Trenchcoat Mafia "cusper." I was 7 years old when it came out and watched the making-of on TV thinking it looked like the most grown-up film ever made. I ended up watching a pirated copy a year or so later and fell asleep during it too, but saw that as a sign of how brilliant and grown-up it must be. I haven't seen it since but always had in my head it was a forgotten gem with incredible makeup and effects, but the only thing I remember is the maggot pizza and Leguizamo actually eating it. Again, I think this made me think it must be a really serious and important movie.
All this Db Sweeny talk makes me think about No man's land with Charlie Sheen. The 1980s fast and furious.
I worked in a huge comic shop from 91 to 97, during the whole crazy speculator push, with endless new #1's and foil covers and wizard hyping up awful, worthless shit...and then watching it all crumble. Some things stuck in my head, like when shadowhawk meets spawn and says "if you are he, then we shall dance". That's Image quality storytelling
That fucking Pearl Jam song was on the radio so much. Had the same reaction too. Like, is this a fucking joke song or what?
Have you seen the guy that sang the original? His hair is a sight to behold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKDMRZv4SYc&list=RDyKDMRZv4SYc&start_radio=1
Since stanger brought it up, the person at the beginning of HBO Spawn is Todd McFarlane
All of my appreciation of Spawn came from the presentation of the HBO show, and then later Greg Capullo’s Spawn art. The show really doesn’t get enough credit for being part of those late 90s HBO shows that helped pioneer the template for other moody adult crime shows starring anti-heroes that came down the pipe afterwards from the network.
That debuted the same time as HBO's other "adult" animated show, Spicy City from Ralph Bakshi, which would make for a fun Zombie Squad.
I'll second Rogers' shout out to Greg Capullo - guy is still killing it and has legendary runs on Batman. I met him at a con and he just shot the shit with me for a while. Dude likes what he does and appreciates the fans!
Couldn't ask for a better birthday present! Hell yeah!
Um, Rodgersh sir Hearts of Darknish was Ghost Rider with Wolverine and Punisher not Shpidey
This movie only makes sense if the villain is Stanger Gorgon
smart money is on 20 year old letterbox dweebs championing this as a forgotten classic within the next few years
VR suit from Lawnmower Man
Cyboman could take on the Violator
Loose tangent off of 90's comics that are good, I just got into Paul Chadwick's Concrete after having seen the ads for it in the back of all my dark horse Predator comics all my life. It's fantastic and he just started a new miniseries a month or two ago.
The Fragile Creature storyline follows Concrete helping the production of a loosely veiled Master of the Universe starring "Wolf Hultgren." I highly recommend.
Why didn't Cogliostro have a suit of necroflesh? Maybe Malbogia didn't invent the necroflesh concept until the Renaissance
he literally only has one use of his hell powers left and if he uses it he dies and returns to hell. (his powers he does use are unrelated black magic he learned in his life as Merlin the wizard)
How in the hell did they recover Al Simmons body from a destroyed Chemical weapon facility in North Korea? Also would love for an episode of Strange Luck to be covered, we dug that one season wonder show growing up.
I went back and read the first couple of Spawn comics this year, they look great. McFarlane’s art carried that series. I tried to get back into the comics this year (they’re still going!) but they couldn’t hold my interest. Liam Sharp’s Dark Ages Spawn spin-off was good. Anyone know what that number countdown in each issue means?
Thanks to this movie I had a Martin Sheen action figure as a child.
Did you pretend you were in Badlands as a child or play Apocalypse Now with your friends?
RIP Sam Neil. 😢 Damn, damn, damn.
God would love for the boys to do a deep dive on Possession 🤞🏼
Has anyone tried the new acrobat “feature” that let’s you turn a pdf into a podcast, what I’ve always wanted to do with the bills I get online: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/acrobat/desktop/use-acrobat-ai/podcasts/create.html
I got a job at a record store/comic shop 10 years ago and was shocked that Spawn is still going strong and has numerous spinoffs. It’s such a product of the 90s that it seems impossible that it can exist outside the decade.
Looks like I’m listening the 3,000 Miles to Graceland episode after this one
This is right up there with Congo and Spiderman 3 as movies I was so hyped for and then realized halfway through the initial viewing that they sucked. A hard lesson for a young movie enthusiast to learn, but necessary.
Side note: comment section killing it on this one. I’m laughing so hard. Nice job everyone!
i came out as a scorpion guy to my family a few years ago. they said deep down they always knew
The toys for this were so cool and expensive
What a year for Leguizamo this and The Pest!
Somehow House of Buggin didn’t slow him down at all
Oh hell yeah, I love this movie it's so bad
The final 20 minutes are legitimately some of the worst stuff I've ever seen
Better than Deadpool
Unintentionally funnier
This movie made me want to do visual effects professionally as a kid.. I was a really dumb kid
If you have not seen the recent doughboys daily double with Rodgers. He basically makes gabrus nick and Mitch laugh for the last half hour. Dude is so funny, he just lights it up.
Speaking of Doughboys I had a similar experience as Weiger when he saw Congo as when I saw Spawn. Like it had all the makings of what should’ve entertained an 11 year old, but it instead sparked an uncanny realisation within me that a movie could be bad.
My life is a Mort of the Month.
Did anybody catch Gabrus in this for a hot minute?
Loved the comic as a kid. The horniness really captured my heart. As an adult man looking back, having your whole comic hinge on a cucking storyline is a choice.
I was rereading it recently (I don't know why) and it's pretty obvious Todd was just chucking whatever he thought was cool that month at the page and rolling with it as he went along
Do yourselves a favor and check out the animated series, it's on HBO Max. The show itself is pretty good, but the real meat is MacFarlane himself doing a Robert Stack Unsolved Mysteries style intro on what looks like an unused Red Shoe Diaries set.
“Anyway here’s spawn”
There was a scorpion in our Airbnb room in Italy and when I let the host know she was like “ok? we get them all the time?!”
15-year old Me lobbied super hard to rent this at the video store, and halfway through my buddies decided I'd have to forfeit all movie rental input for 6 months. Even after that, every time I pitched a movie slightly outside the mainstream someone usually went "yeah, but remember when you made us watch fucking Spawn?".
This movie was absolute ass, with special note going to the Windows 95 era CGI hell sequences. Incredibly, Ebert gave it 3.5/4 stars.
His review made me want to see this movie with his praise of the depiction of hell being worthy of Hieronymus Bosch. Here's a link if anyone wants to read it. https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/spawn-1997
https://youtu.be/WaJhpqAWjuE Everything you need to know about Todd McFarlane
I can't remember the last time that I saw a movie that was a misfire on so many levels. The CGI vision of hell is like tripping on vomit. The 90's rap-rock music is an aural assault. The only reason that John Leguizamo's career survived is because he was so deeply buried in those prosthetics that nobody could have realised that it was him. I feel bad for Michael Jai White that this was his shot at a big budget lead. Although his pre-Spawn line reads play like an unironic Black Dynamite who isn't in on the joke. But Michael Sheen's hammy baddie performance is fun. At least he had a fun look with his cigars and ridiculous dye job. You wouldn't think that he was just two years away from playing President Bartlet in the West Wing.
Me and my brother saw this opening night, we both entered a drawing at Sam Goody and won, winning 4 tickets. So glad we didn't pay. Soundtrack was pretty cool though
I loved this comic as a teen. Back in the day when theycame with coupons in them. The HBO cartoon was way better and explains more.
What was the coupon for? A free Tool tshirt? Jolt cola?
Is this a first appearance of Jon Legazamo on the pod?
No he told Kurt Russell he had stinky feet remember
Red alert. Holy fucking shjt.
These are far too recent to ever get covered on the pod, but if one wants some pretty good modern Michael Jai White movies: “Don’t Mess With Grandma”, “Trouble Man”, and “Hostile Takeover”.
He really looked like he had clawed his way back to become the new king of DTV action in 2009, coming off Undisputed 2, Blood & Bone and Black Dynamite. And then the world decided "nope, that's Scott Adkins". Tarantino still not putting his scene into the new cut of Kill Bill is such bullshit.
I remember seeing this theaters and finding it to be utter dogshit and it was still dogshit when I rewatched it recently. 😆 But as a year, 1997 was actually a GREAT year for movies overall: LA Confidential, Boogie Nights, Gross Pointe Blank, Good Will Hunting, The Ice Storm, Face/Off, Titanic, Starship Troopers, The Game, Austin Powers, Breakdown, The Fifth Element, Donnie Brasco, Private Parts, Gattaca, AND Jackie Brown! 🙂
Yeah. I think the late 90s gets a bad rep mostly just cause of some huge misfires in the summer blockbuster department. There was usually something awesome out every year.
So my ex-cousin-in-law got a 30ft Flying Cloud Airstream and it doesn’t fit in his garage and we live in a kind of snotty area so he can’t let it sit in his driveway so he found a storage spot about 25 min south of us near this lake where people store their boats for the winter and I went with him to drop it and after a little snafu we got it situated and then decided to stop for a beer or 3 at a little dive spot right on the lake called The Sand Bar. We thought about sitting outside but it was really humid and hot so we bellied up at the bar and after a nice chat with the bartender lady our eyes landed on the muted tv that happened to be playing the classic 1977 sequel Viva Knievel! and let me tell you it was a bad ass stunt extravaganza. So I guess the point of the story is this - Do y’all think The Boyz will ever do an Evel Knievel movie?
