For me, James Brolin’s best role is Max in Ted & Venus, the insane Bud Cort movie from 1991. He is a proto-Lebowski in it and he’s fantastic. Highly recommend T&V for a WTF experience. IRL IMO it’s LMFAO but very NSFW, TTYL. Dios mios! TLDR.

I think Gabrus and Rodgers can live the life of their dreams in Lake Worth Beach, FL. You deserve to be happy, fellas!

Woody Allen is the Juggler, got it! I received the subconscious messaging loud and clear, boyz!

I grew up in the neighborhood that this movie was filmed in The Bronx..love that it’s caught on film, cause I tell people all time The Bronx looked like a war torn country for awhile

The kid's line reading of "why did you do that?" Felt too real

On the frozen dessert topic: here in Australia, it’s swung back hard to frozen yoghurt. There’s a place called Yo-Chi that has been popping up everywhere the last 3 years and is always busy.

Every time they say Boyd, all I can think about is boy, which we all well know is slang for H.

A Gabrus divorce confirmation? Reddit shall be pleased.

This was completely new to me. Great New York sleaze, great energy, frequently funny and has a very real/improv feel to a lot of it, lots of real people in small parts, even if the 'NYC = hell on earth' bit gets pretty exhausting after a while, some real reactionary shit sprinkled throughout, not sure I fully agree it's a love letter to NY even if the city is ultimately redeemed at the end. That initial car/foot chase is intense. The kid could've fought back more though tbh. Speaking of porn star Sharon Mitchell, the lady in the robe at the peep show --she's the subject of Juliet Bashore's very interesting faux-doc Kamikaze Hearts (1986), it's on the Criterion channel periodically, highly recommended. And yeah, James Brolin looks so much like Christian Bale here, it's eerie. In The Amityville Horror (1979) he's basically a dead ringer.

Fort Apache The Bronx and this would be good, to keep it in the same time capsule of a haggard era. Capricorn One is fun vintage Brolin, he's an astronaut(with OJ and great cast) faking landing on Mars or something, but he wont do it! Takes a moral stand not unlike Boyd.

Obviously the next great ice cream phase will be dippin dots the ice cream of the future. Then in about 10 years when we all have amazon spaceships the big thing will be astronaut ice cream. Then we will all be dead not too long after.

Mandy Patinkin as a Puerto Rican cab driver in this and Inigo Montoya in Princess Bride. Dude had the Hispanic roles on lock in the 80’s. What a shame you see some actual Latinos in movies these days, Italians and Jews do a much better job. (Yes, this is sarcasm)

Do the video store!!! There’s an awesome non profit video rental store in Seattle called Scarecrow Video, you should check out their website for inspiration/ideas!!

Liz Thompson · June 2, 2026

It’s HUGE, two stories big, has VHS, DVDs, blu rays, 4k, even some laser disc! Also has some stuff for sale - a super awesome place I love to support/spend time in. I’m sure yall could get some awesome donations due to being in LA.

In Night of the Juggler, James Brolin is frantically looking for his abducted daughter. In ‘Weapons’, Josh Brolin is frantically looking for his abducted son. 2 out of 10 find that interesting.

O
Oldmancoyoteface · June 1, 2026

I fucking loved this one! The diner scene telegraphed so much about the character without really any dialogue. Thank you ABZ you have earned your $10 yet again!

The thing to know about steam is that it's hotter than boiling water, and it doesn't have an upper temperature limit. That's how much of a stud Boyd was.

B
BA Metts · June 1, 2026

If prefer to be a DeVito over a Brolin.

J
Jonny · June 1, 2026

Never heard of this one before and had a blast watching it. It's wild that the villain is a crazy pedo killer and Dan Hedaya playing a cop feels more unhinged at points.

G
Gil Slits · June 1, 2026

Best ABZ find in a while. Lots of Die Hard With a Vengeance vibes, fun little details and some of stunts are so sketchy even Friedkin would take exception.

The Mr. Show kidnapping sketch is like one degree of weirdness away from the Juggler's ransom calls in this.

M

yes! Immediately thought of that sketch (one of their best)

Would definitely shop your physical media store whenever I'm in town. I live 15 min from The Archive in Bridgeport, CT which is almost exactly what you're describing. This one is owned by vinegar syndrome. They have VHS, Beta, DVD, Blu-ray, vinyl, etc. as well as some books and vintage magazines. And they have a shelf around the perimeter of the store with vintage toys and shit. https://www.instagram.com/thearchivect?igsh=MWhpdmZqZjhuNHQ2Nw==

The closest gas station to me (East village/Stuytown) was $8.00+/gal before current mid-east crisis. Even with the congestion charge, it’s better to drive to queens.

W
Wesley Dolan · June 1, 2026

To use a much abused cliche, New York really is a character in this film. Loved the seedy atmosphere of the period and there are so many compelling character actors who pop off the screen. Also that was a nice runner about the cop who is simultaneously juggling a kidnapping with his daughter's wedding. I found myself getting surprisingly invested in that subplot.

M
Mitch Kapa · June 1, 2026

I watched this with the captions turned on and when the bum says "share and share alike" the captioner struggled with that and went with "chinchilla".

T
Toon Of The Year · June 1, 2026

The moment Dan Hedaya reveals that he's consumed by seething hatred for our hero and gives zero fucks about the kidnapped kid really kicks this movie into overdrive.

A literal whos, who of many of some of our best bit actors. Also a cavilcad of people from Hotel.
