TS4 Troubleshooting - Disabling Platform Cloud Sync

Author Notes:

  • Jan. 4, 2024 - I'm likely going to redo this post completely using the Image post template. I'm currently poking around in S4S and troubleshooting in r/Sims4 but I'll get to this soon.

  • Dec. 28, 2023 - I want to overhaul this. Stay tuned!

I've been loitering in the r/Sims4 for some weeks now, totally being respectful while trying to pick up PlantSims.

After about five hours of assisting with troubleshooting a help request I had a "Eureka!" moment.

The problem was legion:

  • Unable to place sims on lots.

  • Unable to progress to world selection after sim creation.

  • Failed to save the game errors when trying to load a save.

  • Residential lots turning into non-residential lots.

In a last ditch effort to stave off reinstall I asked if their Origin Cloud storage was enabled and that very moment Mjolnir flew into my desperate open hand, I tightened my grip and I swung with all my might and smacked The Mad Titan upside the nose! How's that for a bed time story, you !@# $%^&*()?!

In layman's words, what this means is the Origin Cloud save data was possibly corrupt so no matter what we did locally, the corrupted data just synced back every time they launched the game. This doesn't necessarily mean the local save files were corrupt so you can restore your save files from your old Documents\*\The Sims 4\saves folder into the new Documents\*\The Sims 4\saves folder after troubleshooting.

So here are the instructions for Origin:

  • By default Cloud storage is enabled. Verify by clicking on Origin (top right) > Application Settings (first option) > Install & Saves tab (third tab) > and it's the first setting you'll see.

  • Disable it, restart Origin and verify it's disabled.

  • Rename your Documents\*\The Sims 4 folder, launch the game and see if it resolves your issue.

If you bought The Sims 4 on Steam you might also need to disable the Steam Cloud. This can be done one of two ways:

  • Globally by clicking on Steam (top right) > Settings > Cloud > uncheck Enable Steam Cloud sync* > OK > Restart Steam > verify it's off by repeating the first 3 steps.

  • Per game by right-clicking The Sims 4 in the Library list > Properties... > General > uncheck Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud* > Accept (if there's any accept / save setting option) > Restart Steam > verify it's off by repeating the first 3 steps.

  • Then follow the instructions for Origin and your Documents\*\The Sims 4 folder.

I have no experience with the EA App or with consoles, I'm sorry.

I truly hope this helps someone else.

If you're suffering from the "Groundhog Day" save bug or similar time / save rolling back bugs and you try this, please post a comment stating whether it helped or not.

Try it even if your issues don't seem related to the issues mentioned. Post a comment if it helped and state what your issue was.
