💬 This post was initially published before I went "full nightmare" in that other "BRUNO" post, so the original thing seen below is a little less... offensive and unhinged. That might change as we move forward, because it's important that we live in reality if we ever hope to combat this issue effectively.

☢️ While corrupt governments and politicians play the arse with AI regulations and projecting guilt onto minority groups at the behest of religious extremists, child predators and explicit material involving children is spreading everywhere. A lot of these folks are the same folks who have been and will still fearmonger that LGBTQIA+ equal rights equates legalizing pedophilia and zoophilia. They are the very same people who turn a blind eye to the rampant child abuse and child rape that occurs in religious organizations, and the religious freedoms those religious organizations have in countries where they influence or control the government to not have to report instances of child abuse and child rape to the authorities. Scapegoating transgender people ain't gonna solve this fuckin' problem, it will just sweep it under the rug and enable predators to continue abusing and exploiting children indefinitely. Do we care about the safety of children or do we care about our fucking ideologies? I understand that kids get attached to things, and if you take it away without them understanding why, they might resent you and get depressed (especially if that thing was their "safe space"), etc.

I don't have kids so I don't really have good advice here.

Maybe just get involved in your kid's gaming more.

Find out what they like, buy some co-op games and play it with them.

It's also important that you have a good rapport with your child so that they feel safe to talk to you about things. There needs to be a balance between being a friend and a parent, or someone else will fill the gap, and that person might be a predator.

Shirley there are parenting resources somewhere that can provide better advice.

"Ignorance" is simply not knowing a thing. It is not inherently toxic or malicious.

Not knowing "how to parent" while being a parent is not some taboo thing to be ashamed of, because none of us are born with knowledge about absolutely everything. Help exists, from folks who have been through this, who are much more knowledgeable than me*.

Both of my parents are toxic and abusive.

I grew up isolated and not having anyone to talk to about anything.

It's not a good way to grow up. It's not healthy.

I woke up to my abuse and I pulled myself just far enough out of the depression to let the anger take hold - the anger at being subjected to mental, emotional, and physical abuse and manipulation by the very people who were supposed to raise me and look out for me, A.K.A. my parents.

My parents are a product of their upbringing and the societal norms they grew up with, and they are a product of their own child abuse. Being a product of your environment doesn't mean that a person can't change, but they have to want to change, and neither of my parents do.

My personal shit and the way I had to dissect it in order to understand it maybe gives me a unique view from which to talk about certain things. I also don't feel the crushing need to be or appear to be civil when civility is not the required response.

No, I'm not about to plug my non-modding social media accounts, but it means that sometimes I might talk about certain things because I believe that someone, somewhere might be able to benefit from the way I'll talk about it.

It's not always possible to keep these things apart, not when we have malicious companies and individuals targeting us literally everywhere and/or taking massive dumps in our spaces.

Online Child Safety is "complex", except each of these platforms has a "Report" feature.

Why the fuck does it not seem to work?

These companies are raking in hundreds of millions of dollars every year by exploiting young folks' need for validation, but none of them can invest in moderation to keep the predators at bay?

A simple thing like "I report [X], you view [X]'s history and ban their account" is too "complex" for these multi-billion dollar companies to figure out?

"Is too complex" is the excuse we're going with?

Where are the lawmakers and the governments to force these companies to do the bare minimum to- right... for a moment, I forgot we're living in the age where lawmakers and governments are bought and paid for by these companies, and we're also living in the anti-censorship age where we've forgotten that some things are a danger to society.

So here's the next question.

Where is the "grassroots movement" highlighting this 24/7, dog-piling their obviously corrupt lawmakers and governments to force change, and/or suing all of these companies into oblivion for failing to do the bare minimum?

Are we just not seeing them?

Are they hard at work trying to change the system from within?

Are they waiting for their representatives to get off their fucking asses and actually do something about Child Safety?

Are they trusting in the Lord?

Are they blaming the kids for being on these platforms, and well... whatever happens to them is their own fault, innit?

I love that they started by reminding you why your kids really, really need ROBLOX in their lives. Don't fuss so much over those kidnapped and raped children, bro. THEY WERE "ISOLATED INCIDENTS". Is not like we can possibly create a platform where kids can learn STEM skills without it devolving into Predator Paradise, right?

Create a platform for kids, THAT'S ONLY FOR KIDS, with appropriate moderation! Human beings employed to ensure the safety of said kids (even from other kids, because kids can be little shits when they learn shit-behavior from the shit adults in their lives), and then fully vet every older-than-kid-aged developer you let onto said platform for kids.

OR, HEAR THIS NOVEL IDEA!

How about split ROBLOX so that the "adult content" ain't on the same fucking platform where the kids are?

Steam has a serious moderation problem.

Have you ever visited the Steam Discussions for The Sims 4?

I don't know how it is now because I haven't been back in while, but when I was there, it was a cesspool of anti-LGBTQIA+ bigotry. Numerous adults just spewing hate and misinformation constantly, and no amount of reports was doing anything because there wasn't an active moderator - apparently each Steam Discussions needs it's own moderator?

So being me, I decided to do something drastic.

I volunteered my time for free, but I didn't get the part! Pfft!

That's not the drastic thing, I do that regularly, and never get the part. I wonder why?! 😹

I screenshot-ed pages upon pages of comments (I still have them) and I reached out to Steam Support. I got the generic "thanks for highlighting this, we'll look into it" response, but being the impatient arsehole that I am (and having previously reported the accounts months before), I went to Answers HQ and I explained the problem in a post, and I said something along the lines of "I'm not sure what to do anymore. Do I just post all the screenshots everywhere for everyone to see the filth flooding the Steam Discussions for this game?"

Before we continue, I want to point out that I mentioned doing all of this in a thread on Reddit, and the responses I got from folks were that I couldn't expect EAxis to do anything about comments on a platform that isn't there's! How dare I blame EAxis for what's happening on Steam?! <SHAKES FIST AND GASPS> I'm being unreasonable!

And here I am thinking to myself the most obvious thing... to me anyway. 😹

Hear me out, right.

EAxis and Steam has a business arrangement that obviously benefits both of them financially. If I'm EAxis and my product is on Steam and Steam is fucking up, then there should be someone I can contact through our business channels, who will rectify the situation, or else I will pull my product, because I don't want to be associated with this shit, right?

Is that an outlandish thing to think? Is that not how business arrangements work?

I could not understand how this simple concept seemed so outlandish to people!

Then again, we live in an age where corruption and abuse can be rife in a company and folks will go to bat for the CEO claiming they couldn't possibly have known what was happening in their company. <GASPS> Think of the poor millionaire CEO! How will they maintain their lavish lifestyle if they are held responsible for enabling corruption and abuse?!

Is almost as though the folks who go to these lengths to defend bullshit are also doing the bullshit and also don't want to be exposed and held accountable either! Why else would we defend the shit we defend? I digress!

To EAxis credit, they did exactly what I expected/hoped they'd do - they reached out to their Steam contacts and got shit done.

I know it's a bit off-topic (the anti-trans bullshit is related to the issue of Child Safety), but I suppose I'm just trying to point out the lengths at which we have compromised ourselves as a society.

Instead of holding folks accountable, too many of us make excuses and accept excuses.
