Walking Mod update, the phone stutter on Wi-Fi is fixed

If your phone camera dropped to 5 fps, froze, or got choppy after a few minutes on Wi-Fi, this update is for you. It also smooths out the camera motion when you start walking, stop and run.

What was going on

Every time the Wi-Fi hiccuped, the mod opened a new connection to the phone and never closed the old one. The phone app sends every motion packet to every connection it has, so after a while it was building the same packet up to 19 times. The logs you sent showed it: on 12 of 70 PCs the phone's packets were arriving 2 to 19 times over, and the worst one was getting 1,140 packets a second instead of 60. That phone was so busy sending copies that the picture fell to 5 fps.

Now there is only ever one connection. When it drops, the mod closes it first and opens a single new one. Closing the app and opening it again also reconnects by itself, no replay or game restart needed.

Also in this update

  • Video now gets its share of the PC first, and the picture stays at 30 fps or more. When the Wi-Fi is tight it gets smaller before it gets slower.

  • The bundled ffmpeg is back on a build that runs NVENC on NVIDIA drivers from 570 up. The previous one needed 610, so on older drivers every NVENC mode quietly fell back to the CPU. If your driver is still too old, the Phone Gyro tab now says so.

  • Breathing, sway and the walk and run motion are one movement now. The camera used to jump a little when you started walking, stopped, or went from walk to run, and holding sprint while standing swapped it for a different sway.

More fixes in this update

  • Getting out of the car no longer freezes the game for a moment, and the view stays in first or third person, whichever you were in.

  • 6DOF: walking up a slope with the phone no longer puts the camera into the road, and CENTRE keeps the camera where it is instead of jumping back to the body. Phone Gyro > 6DOF has a Ground clearance and a Lock height setting for it.

  • Looking around with the right mouse button no longer stops at the edge of the screen or sends the cursor onto a second monitor.

  • While the phone drives the zoom, the 5x preset no longer cuts it short.

  • The Eye Height slider stays where you put it, third person no longer changes your first-person FOV, and the avatar picker shows the body breathing instead of frozen.

How to update

The Walking Mod installs and updates through the russozl hub from now on.

Already have the hub? Close Assetto Corsa and open it. It updates the Walking Mod by itself.

No hub yet? Download the zip attached to this post, run RussozlHub-Setup.exe, sign in with Patreon and click Install on the Walking Mod. It finds the copy you already have, updates it and keeps your presets. Windows may show a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen the first time: click More info, then Run anyway.

Privacy: from version 1.4.2 the russozl Hub sends us a short report when one of our mods or the hub fails on your PC (the error, the lines before it, the versions, your Windows build and graphics driver), and our apps' logs when we ask for them. It never sends your files, saves, passwords, licence keys or your Windows user name. Error reports and logs are deleted from our server after 60 days. It is always on; uninstalling the hub stops it.

On iPhone, update PhoneGyro in TestFlight to the newest build, it has a fix on the phone side too. On Android there's nothing to do.

Still stuttering?

Check the Phone Gyro tab first. If it says the picture is being encoded on the CPU, update your NVIDIA driver. If it's something else, post a screenshot of the tab in #bug-reports on Discord and I'll read your log.
