It could be as simple as he wanted a light source? Or he’s ready to protect Ben against whatever alarmed him?
Hate it when you wake up and have to generate floating arrows when you're still half-asleep.
That's basically just an automatic response by Lucas. He'll have to work on that because it won't do to hurt or even kill Ben when startled...

Where is that arrow pointing at? Maybe it's away from Ben, but the perspective isn't totally clear
looks like a throwing stance to me, like he has pulled the arm back and generated the arrow ready to lob ..somewhere..
