Well then.
So Patreon has realized how thoroughly they fucked up, and decided NOT to implement their proposed fee changes going forward.
While that doesn't do much to help with the dozens of Patrons I've already lost as a result of this boneheaded move, I am pleased that my supporters going forward will not be bled dry by incremental fees.
Thank you all for sticking with me through the uncertainty. Onward and upward!

That and the timing was pretty bad. December/January are stressful on a lot of people's finances with bills from holiday spending. (And people who do work under annual contracts often have their current one ending in December and the new ones may not start right at the beginning of January.) Those that might be inclined to come back might decide to skip a month to get that in order. Then they'll just forget for a while .. or forever.
I think the bigger issue than people who aren't going to come back in general is the people who will come back but who are now going to re-evaluate, and in many cases scale back, the number of creators they pledge to, and possibly how much they pledge. That might end up being good for some patrons if it spurs supporters to keep innovating with pledge rewards, but an arms race for pledges won't, in the long run lead to better content, long term support for creators, and/or be good for anyone.
Nice that Patreon realised that creator's need to be the ones making choices about fees, not the consumers.
It wasn't consumers making the choice about fees... it was Patreon making the choice. I understand why Patreon wanted to change things, but they made their change at the cost of the creators and the consumers.
Thanks for keeping us posted on it. Glad to be hanging around :)
FWIW: as soon as this statement came out, I put everything back where it was. I hope others do this as well. There's no reason to punish you for a misstep on Patreon's part. So: you're +1 at least :-D
Again, Tim, I greatly appreciate you keeping us updated on this. I have been following the fallout from this and had not stopped any of my pledges, but I was very seriously considering it. I'm not happy with how this played out and how Patreon handles their business, so I am leery that something like this could come again in the future. I know you have mentioned looking into alternatives, and I would fully support that, as long as it is worthwhile for you.
I think there needs to be a tier between the $1 and $3... make it what it would have cost patrons currently supporting the $1 tier, under the new fee scheme - call it "Stick it to the man!". (Not entirely serious, but I know I'd get a laugh out of it.)
good, I was hovering over the delete account button in patreon settings this morning trying to figure out what to do. I really like the platform and getting my comics emailed to me when they publish. I'd get it if you wanted to change things, but them forcing the change with no discussion was very Verizon of them, and the fact their website keeps popping up a 'save the internet' while they're doing something to trash it was a great non-sequitur.
Thank Bob! I was having a hell of a time trying to figure out who I was going to drop before Dec 18th. Now I don't have to. :)
I saw what they were doing, canceled, and when I saw the e-mail, rejoined! Glad I caught the input before this month's pledge ran out.
While I agree that was a dumb move on their part, especially without asking Patreons, it didn't remind me of the fee structure you have to deal with. So, in that light, I'll be upping my pledge. Thank you for your continued work, Tim!
So glad to hear they're not implementing the changes. Tim, I'm raising my pledge.
I'll come back
Indeed! If you post about this on the site, I'm sure some will return. After all, you put forward a great CAD universe!
Maybe they will return when they learn the fee is no more.
Some of them may. All of them won't. *shrug*
