I think when you pause it and spend a few minutes trying to analyse what you think is gonna happen next it kind of kills the buzz, we didn't get the chance to pause the TV in the 90s that's what made the show so special, you just had to go along for the ride .. You never hear about Peckham spring again, these shows are a year apart now, so they are stand alone episodes (well the next few anyways) no need to overthink things 🙂

B
BigChanChan · November 2, 2026

The whole point of a reaction channel is to pause and discuss... Also, they need to pause regularly during shows so that copyright triggers don't get set off for the version they upload to YouTube!

T
ThatITBloke · November 2, 2026

The video you reacted to a few years back I think was Tom Scott's story of the sale of Disani water in the UK. Can't find your specific video though. https://youtu.be/wD79NZroV88

Tom reached out and personally asked us to take it down, and we obliged. I knew I remembered it being mentioned in that video, though.

Three Beatle references in one episode!

S
SomeBSName · November 1, 2026

The UK has some of the safest tap water in the world. When it comes to taste it largely depends on the area. More highly populated areas are naturally worse because there's higher demand. Less populated areas are significantly better, Scotland for example has some of the best tasting, safest tap water in the world.

S
SomeBSName · November 1, 2026

Indeed, cola attempted to sell us bottled water, something happened at the bottling plant (I think a contaminated batch) and it hit the news with the headline being something like "cola sells Peckham spring". Their marketing cannot compete with ofah jokes so they failed to make a come back and stopped selling over here.

Mike and Jess, "Powdered Rhino Horn" is/was a supplement to help men..."perform better". It's just a pseudo-science supplement. Boycie was telling Mike he's always believed in it, Rodney walked in, and Mike shushed him. 😂

Buster Merryfield doesn’t eat it if you notice, just mouths at the raw thing 😅It’s interesting how it’s all made in real time, tho. Must be hard to act and do that. Although David Jason liked to eat in programmes. He’s always eating in Frost.

Plenty of bottled water manufacturers sell mains water. Smart water is one of them. Think it's owned by coca cola. The rest Is marketing. That's where you've probably seen some of these scenes before. If you watched the dasani video about it not being sold in the UK.

M

Kudos to you guys for using the original music soundtrack. I don’t think I’ve heard them since the original transmissions. Fair play. By the way, you’re still not used to how British comedy episodes end are you! 😂

A fair few of those tower blocks here in London have been demolished over the years. Quite a thing watching those Fred Dibnah types go about their business, culminating in 20 storeys being blown up. Pretty impressive in such a densely populated city.

D
Dawn · November 1, 2026

I think back in those days there was a stigma around living in a tower block as they didnt have a great reputation. Alot of them were part of estates that had bad reputations. Alot of crime and they didnt lend themselves to being places people wanted to live. Not sure what the similar thing in America would be. I grew up on an estate that had awful reputation for drug and crime . Councils would often house families in tower blocks or estates so not great if youve got 3 kids and your on the 10th floor with no garden a broken lift and a screaming baby. Very Claustrophobic and you just felt like everybody knew your business. Whether you wanted them to or not.

T

Morning! Viagra wouldn't exist for another few years, I'm guessing Delboy mentioned vibrators, which again was a bigger deal one million years ago, before online deliveries 👀

A
ALW · November 1, 2026

I think half of what makes a place feel like home is the people in it, so the Trotter flat does feel cosy. It also helps that Del Boy is respected locally and that their community seems a very good one. But yeah some of those old tower blocks can be awful places. And some not quite so bad. Depends largely on the people you are surrounded by.

J
Jamie H · November 1, 2026

Very much committed to staying spoiler-free, but as the closing of this episode leaves a lot of unanswered questions I just wanted to jump in now for you guys (and for anyone else who is watching for the first time). The next episode was released (and set) a year after this one, Christmas 1993 and you may not find out exactly how all this concluded. However, based on how things start in the next episode, and the fact that none of this is brought up again, we can probably conclude that: - whatever those chemicals turned out to be, they were harmless (to humans); - because the water board had to close off the supply, no more Peckham Spring was made or distributed beyond this episode; - del's scheme was never fully uncovered and there were no significant repercussions for him, or anyone else.

J
Julian · November 1, 2026

There was a Delboy autobiography which apparently explained it. Raquel went bald after drinking it, Cassandra was suspended from her job, Myles went into hiding. Del was in big trouble. Then after visiting his mum’s grave, the case was dropped last minute and a small earthquake destroyed the allotment.

J
Julian · November 1, 2026

It’s plausible they could get away with it. The water glowing yellow is a problem though. Peckham Spring could be withdrawn from the market for unexplained reasons. The public then switches to a different brand due to the water shortage. If people became ill it would be attributed to the tap water.

J

Dasani water isn't available in the UK because it's been proven to be tap water. I'm convinced someone at Coca Cola saw this episode and thought "What a great scam"

P

That's not available in the uk, but where do you think all the water for Coca Cola (and most other soft drink manufacturers) comes from?

J

Writers room? No British show you’ve watched has a writers room in the traditional sense (WILTY to extent perhaps), it’s one of the key reasons for the difference between US and UK comedy. I know you know this is written only by John Sullivan but it’s such a fundamental difference I think it’s worth at least saying.

Hey guys it was Desani water that failed in part to this episode of OFAH in the UK https://youtu.be/wD79NZroV88?is=2HhLNcGagD1eQVpE

D
Deathdisk Productions · November 1, 2026

Also you're right, to quote from IMDB: 'In 2004, the Coca-Cola company introduced a bottled water product line named 'Dasani' in the UK. Media stories circulated that the water was not actual spring water, as many of its competitor lines were, but filtered tap water. The resulting backlash, and a later find that the product contained higher-than-permitted levels of bromate, led to the withdrawal of the Dasani product line in the UK. Press coverage of the saga negatively compared the events to the storyline of this episode.'

M
Matt · November 1, 2026

fun fact too coke cola actually sold tap water to the british look it up haha dont get any ideas Mike and Jess lol

D
Daniel Davies · November 1, 2026

Where do you find these original broadcast versions? I’m so use to the ones on DVD with the altered music.

A
Andy · November 1, 2026

We have a lot of Spring and Mineral water brands in the UK from natural sources. But in 2004, Coca Cola launched Dasani in the UK, which you have as a popular brand in the US. It is cited as one of the worst brand launches in history in marketing and brand circles. It transpired that Dasani is effectively just tap water that has gone through an additional purification process. The UK media heard of this and it was front page news, presenting Coca Cola as selling ‘Peckham Spring’ and taking the UK consumer as a mug. Coca Cola also discovered they’d introduced bromate(a carcinogen) into the water in their process that is above legal UK levels, in a 500k batch of their bottles. They had to do a product recall. The launch was a disaster and Coca Cola pulled Dasani out of the UK, 38 days after its launch and having spent £7m(a lot) on marketing it. I think that what you(Mike & Jess) saw previously that rang a bell must have been about this.

P
Paul Stacey · November 1, 2026

You know coke still sells tap water to you, right? They just purify it, bung some sugar and so on in it (dropped the charly these days), and package it up as the real thing.

M
Michael K · November 1, 2026

An Allotment is a small piece of land people use to grow crops, usually rented from the local council at a very low price. My parents had one and I believe they paid 30 quid a year for it. I loved it and we produced so much stuff we would share it with the neighbours.

An allotment is a small peace of land where you grow fruit and vegetables on an you can have hens two lay eggs things of that nature

D
Deathdisk Productions · November 1, 2026

An allotment is basically a public garden that you as a resident get 'allotted' a section of. I think you have to apply for it specifically, but this was Grandad's allotment of the garden, which Del and Rodney never bothered to tend to or look after.

J
Jonathan Nicoll · November 1, 2026

It was around the time this episode released that Coca Cola tried to export Dasani bottled water to the UK. It was the timing of this episode that was a significant factor, leading to the brand being pulled. Feel free to look into the story, there are YouTube videos that explain in detail.

A
Andy · November 1, 2026

The episode was in 1992, whilst Coca Cola launched Dasani in 2004 in the UK, but it absolutely was described as Peckham Spring in the media, recalling this episode-as it’s effectively just purified tap water, and Coca Cola also accidentally introduced too much bromate into it during purification requiring a product recall. Despite a big marketing campaign it lasted 38 days in the UK.
