The Black Adder - S1E2 'Born to Be King'
Yep, we're idiots... We'll get back on track next week. We know there might be some who will want us to just continue from Series 1. We've really messed this one all up, but our plan is to carry on to S2E2 next week and come back to Series 1.

just realised the actor who played richard IV is also grampy rabbit in peppa pig😂 i knew i recognised that voice!
Don’t do S1. It isn’t funny in anyway.
Oops
Oh dear. The colonials cocked up again. At least you have the chance of uploading to YouTube in the correct order of series and episodes you started watching this show. We'll see...
Should do men behaving badly instead of this. Much more funnier and more you I think
Leading the sheep to the slaughter
The Lion King was stolen from a cartoon In the 70s called Kimba the White Lion
Eek, yea I'll pass season 1
Haha you guys, this made me laugh 😂 easy mistake to make!
S2 is better and 3 is relatable
It was good to see Mike less confused than normal. lol. ONLY JOKING MIKE!! I love the reactions. S2 continuing next week is good. Rowan Atkinson also did a great series called 'The Thin Blue Line', about the police. It's hilarious. Some great characters in it.
Can't wait to see your reaction to 'The Tall Guy' (1989) next week x
It’s refreshing watching series 1 as we all know the others line for line. Glad you enjoyed it
I'm not gunna watch as I don't like the first series, but how long did it take for penny to drop that they were watching the wrong series lol?
Season 1 is fine, but it doesn't exactly do the show justice. I always told my US buddies to watch 2, 3 and 4, and maybe 1 at the end if they really want.
King Brian Blessed turned 90 this year 🫶🏼
As different as the first one was, I liked it in it's own right. But it is true; it is very different!
I have no desire to revisit The Blackadder. Ill see you when you get back to Series 2.
Next week then. They only watched this by accident 👍🏼
Who knows what we'll get next week. Johnny English? Mr bean? Blackadder series 4 episode 3? 😂 Don't worry guys easy mistake haha
Bit of a mistake, but on the plus side you got to see Tony Robinson in a dress two episodes in a row 😆
Wonder when they clicked? I was waiting for it the whole time - “geez it’s like a totally different show” 😅
Hope you'll give the thin blue line a shot after this.
Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson and the other principal performers generally regarded the first series as the least successful. The biggest difference was the characters themselves. Edmund Blackadder was originally a rather foolish, cowardly prince, while Baldrick was often the more intelligent of the two. From series two onwards, those personalities were effectively reversed. What the actors actually said. Atkinson acknowledged that the first series was extravagant and visually impressive, but said: "It looked great, but it wasn't as consistently funny as we wanted it to be." He subsequently praised the bold decision to make Edmund more intelligent, cynical and sophisticated. Tony Robinson was particularly critical: "We all knew from the beginning the first series was pretty dire." He believed Blackadder needed to be the clever character, surrounded by fools. He credited Ben Elton's arrival with helping transform the programme. Just the official view from the actors involved.
If you are going to do Series 1, you would be advised to do 2, 3, 4 and Christmas Special before coming back to it. It has it's funny moments but it's a completely different vibe to the others. The fact is the BBC was very close to not commissioning a second series. Ben Elton was drafted in and they moved to being recorded in a studio - rather than chunks on location.
so amazing that you're watching blackadder now! i've been looking for these for years! (i was a child when i saw these) I've absolutely love these and cannot recommend them enough! You're in for a treat! Hope you enjoy these as much as i did! Love to both of you! you make my day most of the time!
What a pair of plonkers, series 1 was a bit cack but also had some real good bits, at least your cock up has given you an insite to series one.
Series 1 was filmed and aired first, but not many people tuned in and it generally wasn't seen at the time as good enough for the BBC to do another series, but it had promise, so they told them to go away and have a think. They came back with Blackadder the II a few years later and a completely different format, the BBC gave them another chance and it was a hit. Series 1 is funny, but it's very slapstick, silly, and the dialogue meanders sometimes, a lot more so than the rest of the series which relies more on the clever dialogue and is much quicker and well done. You need to be in the mood for it and take it for what it is, so as others have said, I'd advise you come back to it after you finish Series 4 and the specials.
I'm confused (maybe they explain at the end, not there yet) - did they accidentally watch S1E2 thinking it was S2E2?
its there in the caption =]
You're right Brian Blessed is brilliant as the king in S1 😁
Ow no that is literally how Brian Blessed( the king) is in real life lol
Brian Blessed who played the king, isn't much different to the character he plays in this as he is in real life. He's attempted to climb Mount Everest three times without oxygen, acted in numerous films and television parts and is still alive at 90. You should look into him, he's incredible.
Season 2 and 4 are great Season 1 is meh but less funny, more on site filming than actual comedy. Season 3 is alright just a bit hard to follow, just my opinion But 2 and 4 are classic Blackadder, the classic one liners and amazing acting.
This cock up is hilarious, still here for it! I actually enjoyed season 1 cos then it makes it just get better and better You guys are so funny 😂😂
No no no . Skip to series 2
Did you read the caption? They watched this by mistake 😂
The Witch Hunter Pursuivant is my favourite from this series. I think this series hasn’t aged as well as the others and probably requires a bit more historical knowledge to get some of the jokes, but it has its own charms, but is definitely written in a different style to the later seasons
This is Episode 1😁
I'm a fan of all of Blackadder but I think the character is best realised from series 2 onwards when Ben Elton was brought on board as co writer
I'd actually love a reaction to series 1, but dipping in out of sequence, while these guys haven't twigged, feels weird. I'll happily come back if there is ever a full run through of S1 though
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣🥰
I knew there was a reason to be wearing my Brian Blessed Punching a Polar Bear t shirt today.
Sorry for another comment but we got a rescue puppy on Friday and I’ve called him Eddie after Edmund Blackadder and Eddie in Bottom. My Dad passed away and they were two of this favourite shows
When I saw Brian blessed live he quoted the bit at the beginning about the Turks and it made my bloody year 😂. It was an audience with type show and I asked a question about it so then he quoted it. I have it on a voicenote on my phone I was beside myself 🫠😂
Doh! Well what a pair of per-lonkers, LOL. At least you've had a taster of Series 1 and Rowan's character. I'm a fan of it, some don't like it but that's their problem. This was set about 60-70 years before Season 2 in the 1480's and covers the alternative Wars Of the Roses timeline where The Tudors and Henry VII (The House of Lancaster/Red Rose) failed to topple the reigning King Richard III (House Of York/White Rose). Brian Blessed plays the King's son (The Duke Of York) in episode 1 and Blackadder plays his youngest son The 1st series was written by Atkinson and Curtis whereas the remaining 3 series and specials were by Curtis and Ben Elton who was introduce to add more funny/sarcastic/cynical lines for Blackadder's next 3 iterations.
The bbc and the principal actors didn’t like it either.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this, despite getting the two episodes entirely out of synch. So many people disparage Season One and I love it. It IS funny, and with a terrific cast (Brian Blessed is a tremendous Shakespearian actor) but as it is set in Mediaeval England (circa 1485) and contains a lot of Shakespeare in-jokes a lot of people just don't get it. Each season is set in an entirely different historical era and the later seasons do get funnier. Season Two is set in Elizabethan England, at the court of Elizabeth Ist, played brilliantly and capriciously by Miranda Richardson. Season Three in Regency Times at the home of the dim-witted Prince Regent played by Hugh Laurie, and Season Four during World War One, in the trenches. Each season is a story in itself and gives us the descendants of this, the first Lord Blackadder. He is a lot cleverer in the later seasons, and Baldrick gets dumber and dumber. It is wonderful comedy and I really haven't given you any spoilers - I just think you will understand what is going on better, knowing the above. You did seem SO confused watching this, but I'm glad you laughed a lot.
The guy from house is in season 3 and 4
He's also in series 2.
I'm all for the crazy jumps between the BA timelines. Can we have series 4 episode 3 next week? :)
Ummm something wrong here.
Ah, no! Was looking forward all day for reaction to Se2 Ep2. Never mind, happens to the best of us, but pls 🙏don't make us wait a whole week for the next episode. I don't think I can take it, Tuesdays have now become my favourite day! The silver lining of course is that going forwards you guys will have a much better appreciation of the superiority series 2-4 has over series 1.
They enjoyed watching it. Series 1 isn't as bad as the rap suggests.
Season 1 and 4 the best
I’ll pass until we get back to season 2 I think
Bloody punk rockers!
The King (Brian Blessed) is the same in real life, the oldest man to have climbed Everest, a monumental character in the UK. And.. I always thought the first series was underrated , different but still funny.
This reminds me of when I went to the video library to rent The Omen. I was looking for it, saw the word "Omen," took it to the counter and paid my money. Got home and put it on to find out I'd rented Damien: Omen II by mistake.
Cheers Keith
You may know Brian Blessed from film 'Flash Gordon' -Prine Vultan, also Disney Tarzan 1999 and Star Wars 1 as Boss Nass. He voice and mannerisms are a wonder of amazement
No definately not idiots..... doing the right thing. Do series 2-4 then maybe try 1
I'm confused. You've gone from series 2 ep 1 to series 1 ep 2. Am i going mad :)
Because somehow they thought this was 2nd episode of series 2. Even though it said S1E2 and the show had mysteriously changed a large amount, neither of them was able to sniff out that there could've been a slight cock up. I don't know how they managed that either.
Series 2 is the only one worth watching anyway.
No it isn't the only one worth watching at all.
Glad you enjoyed this one. Just goes to show, you should ignore any suggestions you see in these comments. Err... including this, I suppose. Not sure where that leaves you.
Is this the very first episode where Baldrick utters the immortal phrase - I have a cunning plan. Or does he say it in Ep1?
Looking forward to season 3, episode 3 next week!
Personally i’d continue with the rest of Series 2 ,move on to 3&4 & then series 1
Never understood the hate for series 1. To me it's on a par with 3 and far funnier than 2. But every taste is different
I love it
Not sure who told them to start from season 2. But they should have started from season 1, as the principal setup of the show is generations of Edmund through key historical periods. They should just start from Ep1 of season 1. Not doing this will miss the core element of Edmund evolving through time. Like if you agree.
Disagree. Growing up, we only had the VHS of series 2-4 so I never even looked for series 1 until I was much older. Everything you just said is apparent to the audience even if you start from 2.
Seems like they enjoyed it which is good. Can't believe they watched the whole episode before realising the mistake lol
Oh my gosh! It's so sweet how shocked Jess is at "the queen of England's t*ts line. Over here in the u.k. that's so innocuous.
I’ll be 100% missing this overrated nonsense. My opinion.!
100% nonsense opinion
Doh!
One of the best episodes of series one ❗
The Spanish Infanta is my favourite of this season, but I like them all.
You plonka's 🥰
Brian Blessed unlocked, unexpectedly. Also, I was surprised to see Angus Deayton as one of the jumping jews.
Series 1 is very different from the other series and I don’t think it’s nearly as good as series 2-4.
I’ll give watching episode this a miss until they get back to season 1
Hey guys, do NOT go back to Series 1 after Series 2. Run thru Series 3 and 4. Then go back to Series 1 if you want to. Because Blackadder in Series I is NOTHING like the character in Series 2-4.
This was very amusing - main thing is you enjoyed both episodes, even though they were from completely different seasons 😂 Oh, and it's great to see Brian Blessed on the channel (The King).
Having said all that at least you enjoyed it and will go back to it👍🏻
I was hoping the moment of realisation would be on camera. 😂Still, it bodes well for when you eventually circle back to series 1.
I like series 1. I think all of the series are made better by some knowledge of British history, but S1 more so. A lot of jokes also rely on knowing Shakespeare, especially in S1E1.
Yes, knowledge of British history is needed to really appreciate the humor.
Does anyone actually want to watch season 1? I love Blackadder but season 1 is completely unwatchable. Its like a different show. The only upside to this season is Brian Blessed
I like series 1, it's the first series I saw. The haters just don't get it.
What a mess up🤦🏼♂️😆😆😆
Seasons 2, 3 and 4 saw a switch in writing team from Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson to Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. A massive improvement. I like season 1 but only as a Blackadder completist.
Funny you should mention The Lion King - Rowan Atkinson was actually in it!
For a second I thought I was having an aneurysm. Never mind. Shit happens.
I look forward to an episode of Mr. Bean next week.
YES!!! 🙌🏼 🥳
Ah thought they realised they were watching season 1 😂
Watch this, next week it'll be S04E03, the week after S03e04, then one of the specials, and then the pilot.
This reminds me of the still game incident
Season 4 is by far and away the best. The rest are pretty meh
Disagree.
Realise it was a mistake but I think I'll give this one a miss. I've never enjoyed series 1 anyway. I know you said you'll return to series 1 at a later date. I wouldn't do it until you've completed 2-4. As you can see, each series is set in a different period in the family tree, but series 1 is just too different - as per the advice you listened to.
I didn’t enjoy S1 to start with but after watching the other seasons, I came back to watch it and now think it’s hilarious.
I think that's what's called a 'senior moment' guys, and as senior moments go this one was a belter 😂
The Blackadder character is completely different in this series compared to the rest. He is more of a loser, compared to the smart witty character in all the other series. Series 1 is filmed inside of an actual castle and outdoors, so the sound and lighting is different, as the other series are on a set. Series 1 and 2 were filmed 3 years apart too
Think the chap from ‘House’ turns up in series 3&4
Hugh Laurie is in Series 2 (I won't say when) and when he appears he is in Blackadder thereafter.
Long Live King Richard the Fourth!
at least you got a chance to see what everyone talked about with how different it is - so, every cloud....
Wtf? Was hoping for episode 2 season 2
Assuming you didn't read the description
So next week will be the pilot? 😅 (there actually is a pilot, it was lost for decades but found a few years ago. It has a different cast, except for Rowan Atkinson and the guy playing Percy)
You've had what you will soon come to know as a 'Baldrick moment' 🤣
At least you appeared to enjoy, maybe you could have started with this one from the get-go after all! At least you're willing to come back to it though! :)
I'm hearing Dr. Ian Malcolm right now. And that..that ..is chaos theory.
Chronological order ... uh .... finds a way
Happy with this little gem of a throwback.
FREAKYYY!
FUNKAAAY!
My favourite bit about s1.. brian blessed 🤩..
Gordons alive!
🙄
I would watch series 2, 3 and 4 and then go back to series 1. Series 1 has no relation at all to the other series where Rowan Atkinson plays a useless brainless fool. I watched it once and that was enough for me, I've watched the other series multiple times.
Oops! 😂 Oh well...
We've all been there at some point lol
It'll be interesting to see what you make of this. If nothing else, It'll give you an idea of why people have said to start on series 2. Obviously, having grown up with Edmund in the proper order I do like series one but it is miles away from what it became.
Well that was a confusing notification I just got, thought I had a memory lapse haha
I've been waiting to watch Head 😞 I guess it's a bit confusing as you don't normally start with season 2
I'm sure we'll all get Head next week.
😂😂
I love series 2-4, never been drawn to watch series 1 , this gives me a reason I guess ! If it’s terrible then at least we all know don’t we 😆
wrong series guys.
Pinned comment 👍
Hope you enjoyed it. A very different vibe from the other 3 main seasons and, for me, this season is best enjoyed after season 4. It sounds an odd way around but it really is a very different beast.
I agree
Well this is freaky…
Freakay
