So Flashheart tweaked the adder's beard. From now, he always shall be single. To fall in love with boys is weird, especially boys without a dingle. Blackadder! Blackadder! His taste is rather odd. Blackadder! Blackadder! A randy little sod. Lord Flashheart! Lord Flashheart! I wish you were the star! Lord Flashheart! Lord Flashheart! You're sexier by far!

S
Scott Andrew Brass · October 21, 2026

Thing is. You could have started with any series from 2 onwards and you would have got the premise and characters in it. My personal favourite is Goes Forth though and I was at a taping of one of the episodes when I was 15.

So glad you’re onto blackadder and starting from season 2 is perfect. It’s bonkers but stick with it you’ll love it!

I'm a long time follower of your channel, almost from the beginning but have always been a lurker rather than a contributor. I recently got one of your free patreon memberships for a month and am so grateful but have been a little disappointed in some of the shows you are being recommended. Shows like Max and Paddy, Green Wing, Alan Partridge and even Derek are a little marmite with lots of people. But then again I've never liked Still Game or Friday Night Dinner and you seemed to have loved those. Not sure if you will enjoy Black Adder or not. I like it but it's not on of my favs like with many other people. Can I recommend This Country, The Royle Family, Dinner Ladies, Mandy, The Good Life, Inside Number 9, Butterflies, One Foot In The Grave later series and Getting On. All of these shows have a real heart to them and I feel you will warm to very quickly. I adore your channel and have particularly enjoyed your reactions to Gavin and Stacey, Only fools and horses and After Life. I am not surprised you struggled with Father Ted as it took me a while to take to it but it's now one of my favs. We're all different.

The comedy bottom needs to be top of your list 😄

J

This show will definitely get the drop

Besides Only fools and horses it's the only decent thing they're watching.

The best comedy in British TV history (imo). It only gets better from here 👌🏼

Yes! been following oyu guys for years and sooo happy you're watching blackadder, It has such a special place in my heart as I used to watch it with my dad who sadly passed suddenly when I was 19. Love you guys really enjoy your reactions

P

Yes, Blackadder is full of quotes I use in life. 😂 Same as Gavin and Stacey.

L
Lloyd Hewitt-Robinson · October 17, 2026

Mike and Jess, you absolutely have to watch Bottom. it has Rik Mayall in it, he was Lord Flashheart. its brilliant, you'll love it.

S
Steve K · October 17, 2026

Fantastic choice. And good to start at S2.

S
Scott Andrew Brass · October 17, 2026

Edmund Blackadder and Mr S Baldrick certainly have the same sort of relationship that Basil Fawlty and Manuel have.

G
Glyn Newcombe · October 16, 2026

Next up should be the Vicar of Dibley or One Foot in the Grave

G
Glyn Newcombe · October 16, 2026

RIP Rik Mayall. Irreplaceable.

G
Glyn Newcombe · October 16, 2026

Stephen Fry once said that Miranda Richardsons portrayal of Elizabeth 1 is one that’s closest to her actual character and personality

E

Who? Miranda Richardson or Elizabeth I.

As a kid, I always enjoyed this show more for all the theatrics and performances, but now I'm older, the writing definitely shines through aswell. M&J, You both are going to have to get extra creative if you choose to dress up for this show 💚💜

A
Ark Raven · October 16, 2026

Definitley recommend you trying out 'Bottom' if you like Rik mayall as flashheart

J

I will thoroughly enjoy watching this with you if you stick with it. Stephen Fry is another relatively well-known name that you might be familiar with.

M
Melinda Bower · October 15, 2026

I was fourteen when this was first broadcast. It was watched by so many people, and all the kids could quote the whole show after seeing it once. I still remember it pretty much word for word.

A
Anthony Renham · October 15, 2026

Black Adder is iconic British comedy.

J
John Farnall · October 15, 2026

I’m glad in a way you started with series 2. Series 1 was very different and very English. I feel it may have spoiled your potential enjoyment of later series. This still may prove a touch too far for you, but stick with it if you can. I think you have been “Anglicised” enough thru your reaction experiences to get it’s humour.

I
Inter Malager · October 15, 2026

Its time to do more stuff with Rik Mayall, I am amazed he has seemingly slipped your net. Id love to see you react to Bottom some time

J
Joe Gilbey · October 15, 2026

Season 1 is nowhere as good as S2, S3 & S4.......You guys have started at the best place, It just gets better from here

K
KoRneliusV1 · October 15, 2026

This might sound dumb... but where's the rest of the episodes... in the collection this is the only episode.. oh and a decent film about Life And Death to check out, 'Monty Python - The Meaning of Life' Its the Weakest film out of all the Monty Python films, but has very interesting ways of looking at Life and Death from all walks of life, as the Film goes from The Birth all the way to When you die... Filled With Slapstick and Humour to make the film less heavy.. And Rest In Peace Rik Mayall... my dad got me watching Bottom when I was a kid.. had the film where They both go to prison on VHS..

E
Emma Edwards · October 15, 2026

They just started Blackadder on Tuesday so there’s only one so far. There’ll be a new episode every Tuesday.

M
Michael · October 15, 2026

Yeah, a nice introduction to Rik, it’s a nice way to meet him - let the floodgate to the rabbit hole open, it’s pointless to resist…

M
Michael Mccabe · October 15, 2026

You dont like Mr bean! The best silent actor who ever lived

N
Nathan Cochrane · October 15, 2026

Ah man. God I miss Rik Mayall. I grew up watching Bottom, the young ones and to this day, they are still my go to shows when I'm sick. It just cheers me up, makes me forget about the world for a while. When Rik died my whole family was saddened by it. Rik Mayall is an absolute icon of comedy for our family, his comedy influenced my personality way too much and for that I thank him. RIP Rik.

J

C
Cadan Richards · October 15, 2026

Blackadder 2,3 and 4 are the best Seasons, Season 1 is good just a bit over produced and less funny. Think you'd enjoy Season 2 and Season 4 the best they are the best loved seasons and time periods.

N
Nik · October 14, 2026

I was around when this series first aired. I can tell you it ruined the life of anyone name Bob for the following year. People would pronounce it just the way Blackadder did

c
chief117 · October 14, 2026

Now you've met the great Rik mayall you have to react to Bottom

S
Stu · October 14, 2026

Relax people let them take it in one episode at a time:

D
Darren Neaves · October 14, 2026

This is in my top 3 with Only fools and horses and IT crowd.

A
Alexander Page · October 14, 2026

Interestingly, the reason why Blackadder series 1 is formatted the way it is was to make it impossible to accuse it of being derivative of Fawlty Towers. This was a real concern at the time, the same way that there was a period there where every animated show was accused of ripping off The Simpsons, even when they were nothing alike.

P
Petter Brads · October 14, 2026

I would avoid series 1 as it was extremely bad and even the actors struggle to find positives of it

M
Martin · October 14, 2026

Flash is played by Rik Mayall from the popular The Young Ones. If you like you'd like The Young Ones. You'd like that show, Mike

S
Stefan spearey · October 14, 2026

If you enjoyed Flashhart played by the legend himself Rik Mayall, then please check out more Rik Mayall. I would say start with Bottom and see how you go. The Young Ones and Filthy, Rich and Catflap might be too much for you but I agree with The New Statesman being another of his you will like. Interested to see your Blackadder journey. Thank you for giving it a go

I
IG:MoreMusicMemes · October 15, 2026

I'm not sure a comedy surrounding the political system would land. I'd even say Bottom wouldn't land either, as much as it's a favourite of mine. I'm not sure they'd go along with the humour

P
PheebHello · October 14, 2026

I haven't watched it yet but I'll be surprised if you like it.

M
Mark Crook · October 14, 2026

The reason most people suggest skipping the first series is because it's basically a different show, a couple of the main characters effectively swap everything about the characters as opposed to how they are in every series going forward and while it's certainly not bad, it's just not as good as any of the following series. Also worth noting, it's one of those shows when the time period for the show changes every series, so if one series doesn't grab you, the next one might.

D
Dan Anderson · October 14, 2026

and so it begins haha

C

I
Ian Marks · October 14, 2026

Also, the queen is played by Miranda Richardson who also played Rita Skeeter the journalist in Harry Potter and voiced the evil Mrs Tweedy in Chicken Run 🤯

D
Darren Neaves · October 14, 2026

And the witch in sleepy hollow

A
Alan Shephard · October 14, 2026

I always struggled trying to watch Blackadder when I was younger, British comedy was a staple in my family growing up, but I could never seem to get into Blackadder, I think it was either the setting, or the silliness (although I loved The Young Ones, which is arguably more silly than this) I don't know, but I have to say, watching you guys reacting to it makes it much more watchable for me! Maybe I will finally be able to appreaciate it now.

J
Jack Mainprize · October 14, 2026

It took me years to get my Chinese wife interested in British comedy. at first she just raised an eyebrow and said " but they're just being stupid all the time." Then over the years, she came to "get it" and appreciate the mix of silliness, clever writing, and brilliant acting. The trifecta that makes these gems work. :-) actually there's a fourth element, social commentary. So that's ruined my trifecta idea. Bugger.

I
Ian Staines · October 14, 2026

You should watch Man down , written by and starring Greg Davies, Rik Mayall plays his father, and Rosain conatry as his best friend, absolute bonkers

I
Ian Staines · October 14, 2026

Rik Mayall, absolute legend, R.i.p.

J
James Rand-Loxton · October 14, 2026

Definitely consider "Young Ones" some of Rick Mayalls finest. Also has Nigel Planter in who you'll see in future episodes and Ade Edmonson who is another brilliant sketch artist. Rik is dearly missed comedian over here

Rik Mayall; legend.

K
Karl Ward · October 13, 2026

So glad you're reacting to this classic series! I think your right to start at series 2. Series 1 was written by Rowan Atkinson and Robin Curtis (of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones Diary), but had a completely different tone until the subsequent series when Ben Elton joined as a Co writer. There are 4(3) series and 4 specials to look forward to and I hope you enjoy them!

K
KC Pawsy · October 13, 2026

You’ll hate it. You won’t see it through. It’s sooo dated and you really won’t get it.

D
Daz Parker · October 13, 2026

I mean.... their reaction to this episode would suggest otherwise

S
Steve Loveridge · October 13, 2026

Everyone needs more Rik Mayall in their lives. Fun fact, Flasheart's was mostly Rik's creation.... "Mayall took the initial script outline and virtually rewrote his entire part, packing it with "loads of jokes". According to show producer John Lloyd, this heavily annoyed the writers (Ben Elton and Richard Curtis), as Mayall basically decided the written script was immaterial and that the swaggering, lusty Flashheart would be entirely his own creation. According to co-star Tony Robinson, as soon as filming finished, a proud Mayall immediately asked the cast, "Did I win?"

P
Paul D · October 13, 2026

Blackadder is a work of genius

J
Joey Martin · October 13, 2026

YOU'VE MADE A TYPO!

J
John · October 13, 2026

Mayall may well be the most naturally funny man in history. One of them, anyway.

D
Darren Neaves · October 14, 2026

That's Atkinson, hence the huge success of Mr Bean where he barely speaks.

C
Claire Reed · October 13, 2026

Blackadder series 2-4 is utterly brilliant. The more you get to know the characters in their different iterations, the more you will love it. Rik Mayall, Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson Stephen Fry and Miranda Richardson are recurring actors plus others you may know, like Miriam Margolyes and Robbie Coltrane. You might have to pause more because the jokes come very thick and fast. Thank you for the free months subscription xx

J
John · October 13, 2026

Pretty sure after filming the scene, rik mayall asked did he win. Because he intended to upstage rowan.

F

Rik Mayall a total legend! I used to watch The Young Ones and especially Bottom when I was in my teens back in the early 90s with a big bag of Onion Rings (crisps green large bag). Really hope we get to watch you react to Bottom although you need to be open minded as it isn't for everyone same with another favourite Nesbitt - strong Scottish accent but really random funny! Rik Mayall (RIP)

D
Darren W · October 13, 2026

I love Blackadder and if you give it time it will grow on you more and more it gets better with every series in my opinion. The one thing to remember is that there are A LOT of historical references (European) so it may be wise to look them up afterwards to get the full context and the show is full of sarcasm. I agree that series 1 is a harder watch but once you get the comedy its ok.

The European adder is a viper. It’s mildly venomous along the lines of a copperhead. You don’t want to get bitten by one, but actual deaths are very rare.

K
Kim · October 13, 2026

Great reaction from you both, I was nervous about this one and was not sure that you'd like blackadder, super happy that doesn't seem to be the case. You will want to listen to the words of the theme tune at the end in this series, as they change to suit the episode. You definitely did the right thing to skip to series 2, and keep going through 3 and then 4 and back to 1 if you want to, but 1 is no great loss if not . I think 2, 3 and 4 are all great fun, will be interesting to see which one is your favourite. P.s Please do also include the specials, including the Christmas carol and back and forth.

Paul Tomkins · October 13, 2026

So glad you enjoyed that. Series 2 is so good. Series 3 is even better, I think, with Hugh Laurie becoming a regular. And series 4 is about as good as British tv gets. I hope people don’t spoil it for you, but series 4 was one I’ll never forget watching at the time, back in 1989. So many of the cast went on to have huge careers, as did the writers. And I don’t think it has dated too much because of the historical setups.

The best thing about this is the ensemble cast of British comedy royalty. They are having so much fun and it translates onto the screen. Many of them had long careers. The actor who plays Percy was Robett Glover in Game of Thrones. Baldrick and Lord Flashheart went on to work with Greg Davies in the future. Hugh Laurie is possibly the best thing in it, when he eventually appears.

As to this particular series - the intelligence of it kicks of in season 2 and grows greater in 3 and 4. I really can't stand the first season and I suspect many who gave the suggestions to start at this point were of the same opinion. Season 1 is sort of just something new for Rowan and it didn't really work for a lot of his fans. It has its moments of course, but in a very different way than s2-4. And if you are a Hugh Laurie fan, well s3-4 are the ones to focus on for sure =D

A
Andy Roberts · October 13, 2026

So glad you enjoyed this episode. I’m hopeful you’ll watch the remaining 5 episodes of season 2, because they are very much in the same vein of comedy as this first episode. The same goes for the writing of the 3rd series, “Blackadder the Third,” and the 4th and final season, “Blackadder Goes Forth.” The genius of this programme is that each series is set in a different time, with the character of Blackadder being a descendant of himself as each series goes into the next. The first series is set in 1485 (near the end of the Middle Ages), the second series is set around 1558 - 1603 (the Elizabethan era), the third series is set around 1811 - 1820 (the Regency era) and the final series is set in 1917 (during the First World War on the Western Front in France). There are also a couple of one off Blackadder TV specials to react to, that will keep the Blackadder fix going for you.

J
Jamie · October 13, 2026

L
Lolly · October 13, 2026

Fun fact for Jess, Rik Mayall (Lord Flashheart) was cast as Peeves in the original Harry Potter film He filmed his scenes abd everything but got cut because he made the kids laugh too much which disrupted the production schedule. Rik laughed it off saying he still got paid his significant salary and is the best film he ever been in because he wasn't actually in it. He didn't tell his children he got cut and they thought he played Hagrid because of all the makeup

B
BigChanChan · October 13, 2026

It's a good show... It's often regarded as a great show, but it's nowhere near close to the likes of OFAH in my opinion... There's a lot of theatre type overacting by guest actors in this season, and S4 carries the show a little... It's a good show, worth reacting to but for me, the more I watch it, the more I think it's slightly overrated by many.

J
Joey Martin · October 13, 2026

Aye, if it wasn't for series 4 and the fact that it stars Mr Bean, this would have been long forgotten.

C
Craig Broadley · October 13, 2026

You need to watch The Thin Blue Line after this with Rowan in. Similar humour as its same writers too

A
Andy · October 13, 2026

You mentioned being somewhat familiar with Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie. Stephen Fry (Lord Melchitt) - now Sir Stephen Fry, was Hugh Laurie's comedy partner in several British comedy shows. You might have seen him in films like V for Vendetta or the Hobbit or heard some of his voice work in Video games, tv or films. Tim McInnerny (Percy), has been in many things like Notting Hill, Gladiator 2 and Game of Thrones. You may have also seen Miranda Richardson(Queen Elizabeth I) in the Harry Potter films as 'journalist' Rita Skeeter.

P
Peter · October 13, 2026

Definitely right to start Series 2 it's the proper Blackadder theme. In Series 1 he is a completely different character. So if you like it after Series 2, carry on to Series 3. Don't go back. Then for Series 4 it is a classic, especially the last episode. But a long way to go yet.

Thank you for starting at S2. I know it sounds mental and there will still be people that aren't happy but S1 is sincerely a load of crap. They didn't know what show they were making, it just wasn't good. You would not have wanted to continue and I wouldn't have blamed you. If you are really intrigued, watch S1 after you've finished the other seasons, but I really wouldn't advise jumping into it after S2.

K
Kathy Hills · October 13, 2026

That's a bit harsh. Series one was definitely NOT crap. It had the legendary Peter Cooke and Brian Blessed in. Just because some people don't know their history they don't get the jokes. There are a lot of references to Shakespeare plays, especially Richard III. If you know the history and like Shakespeare you will get the jokes. Don't disparage something you just don't understand.

I'm so invested in the reactions from you guys watching Blackadder! It will be interesting to see whether an older show with a different comedic style translates across the pond! For context, Rown Atkinson, Stephen Fry and Rik Mayall are comedy titans, especially if you grew up in the UK during the 80's and 90's. Stephen Fry actually did a really good analysis on the differences between UK and US comedy which is definitely worth watching! Cant wait for the next episode!

Awesome, Tuesdays continue to be fantastic even after Still Game! Blackadder was one of those shows I was allowed to stay up and watch as a kid when it first aired, and I was 8. Probably seen each series at least 5 or 6 times since then. Comedy royalty throughout, and every series after this is phenomenal. You missed that Stephen Fry is Lord Melchett. Then Hugh Laurie comes in (Fry & Laurie). Some amazing characters to come. Made my week so far. Then more Green Wing to come. Got a cracking mix on the go at the moment. Cheers.

Lord Flashheart is played by the legendary Rik Mayall, who, you'll see more of as you watch british shows. He's a legendary actor and when i first watched it was such a pleasant shock to see him in this.

D
Daniel Davies · October 13, 2026

Rik Mayall famously took the role of Lord Flashheart on the condition that he got funnier lines in his one scene than Rowan had in the entire episode.

Blackadder! CLASS! Glad you have started with S2, as S1 is very very strange and written in a different way. Ever so glad you got it from the start, I dont know why anyone would say it's a difficult watch or difficult to get into. It has some of the best British comedic actors of all time in it and its based in some small parts of historical accuracy

K

Only Fools and Horses won, Blackadder was second. My point is, you guys are in for a treat and I REALLY hope it vibes with you. Also well done for skipping the first series. R
Rob Pitt · October 13, 2026

Never understood why reactors always listen to people who clearly want to express their opinion so hard that you skip an entire series. They NEVER start at season 1 because the vocal lot demand they don't watch it. Which, in my opinion, is stupid. That's the same as if you'd skipped series 6 of TM just because those who don't like it were telling you not to watch it (and you ended up liking that series). You should make your own opinion on a show by watching it - disappointed you decided to skip it

D
Daz Parker · October 13, 2026

Completely different to skipping 6 series of Taskmaster Rob, to be fair, thats a silly comparison. I'm a big fan of the 1st series myself and always have been, but the characters are quite different in it so I understand why its more palatable to go from series 2 onwards.

I
Ishmael Lasting · October 13, 2026

Useless bit of information for you: the opening sequence with the snake is a parody of the opening sequence of the TV series 'I, Claudius'.... Also, I don't think people have advised you to start with Series 2 because it's difficult for Americans to get into. Series 1 is just a very, very different show. Although it has its fans and defenders, most people just don't like it very much.

K
Kathy Hills · October 13, 2026

I watched Blackadder from the very start, many years ago and LOVED it. The only reason a lot of people find it difficult is that most of its humour derives from jokes around history and, in particular, some of Shakespeare's plays. If you don't know the history or anything about Shakespeare you don't get the jokes. It has, truly, a very different vibe from the rest of the series but with actors like Brian Blessed and Miriam Margolyes in it can't fail to be good. I hope they give it a try after watching series four.
