Only Fools and Horses - S7E5 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Uncle'

Seeing them go from not being sure about OFAH at the start to Jess being sad at it ending soon is so heartwarming!! 🥰
Uncle Albert is jacked as hell
Maybe the Confederate flag in Boycie's office was something to do with the Dukes of Hazzard? They had it on the roof of their car and I can remember watching that show as a kid, back in the '80s. (I would post a photo, but I can't work out how to do this in a Patreon comment.)
The 'Trotter's Trembler' joke was cut.
It wasnt. Its in the "Heroes and Villians" episode.
Oh Paul McCartney, say no more !! My ears are bleeding
Paul McCartney is a genius. Listen to his track Yesterday.
Jesus what a hideous song !
From 1960 to 1980, 80% of the docks in London closed. A whole way of life gone almost overnight. London went from being a port city to, well, not being one in the space of one generation.
Just joined the Patreon after nearly a year of watching your YouTube channel and I’m so glad I did. This might have been suggested already, but maybe once you have finished Only Fools, you could watch Goodnight Sweetheart. It stars Nicholas Lyndhurst and is about him becoming a time traveller and going back to London during WW2. I won’t say more, just in case you decide to watch
there's a spin off series called: the green green grass you should check out after
You should sing along to the theme tune for the final OFAH reaction
Does anyone know if Tobacco road used to be like what Uncle Albert said? or just made up?
I couldn’t find anything about the workers’ two up and two down houses (I can imagine they were needed for the dockworkers), but there is certainly info about Tobacco Dock: https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/collections/london-stories/london-dock/ http://stgitehistory.org.uk/tobaccodock.html https://www.londonshoes.blog/2024/02/01/tobacco-dock-london-e1-open-day-visit-jan-24/ https://c8.alamy.com/comp/RJADH7/an-engraving-depicting-the-london-docks-covering-100-acres-they-could-at-this-time-accommodate-500-ships-the-warehouses-could-hold-up-to-230000-tons-of-goods-and-the-tobacco-warehouses-alone-covered-5-acres-dated-19th-century-RJADH7.jpg https://londonist.com/london/features/secrets-of-tobacco-dock
The Christmas Specials are arguably some of the best episodes.
🦁awwwwww
We know that you are gradually moving towards end but you have some brilliant episodes ahead. It's been awesome watching you move through the gears from a a show about a cockney wide boy from Peckham doing some ducking and diving to being thoroughly invested in this amazing show.
@52:20 That's exactly how London is all the time...
Are you planning to watch 'Rock and Chips'?
It would be sad if Mike and Jess missed out on that!
Ironically he was a boxing champion in the army. Lol.
"Who's there?" "Knock Knock" Chef's kiss
Cassandra calling out Mike’s Del Boy starter kit 🤣 Also have we ever seen the corridor outside the flat before? So strange for them to show it for such a brief moment
Yes. Lots of times, mainly in the early series.
Never judge a book by its cover is the lesson learnt here
the show was doing so well viewing figure-wise that they could afford an actual Paul McCartney track 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' (you only hear the Uncle Albert bit in this and yes it has a telephone ring on it). It's from his 1971 solo album 'Ram'.
I wonder if it was part of the writer's inspiration for Uncle Albert and him being in the navy?
The uncle Albert song is actually a song that was released by Paul McCartney in 1971
I like the talladega nights reference there, Mike
Did you know there is also a spin off show "The Green Green Grass" with Boycie and Marlene.
Prob the worst few months for OFAH, this episode, next and the 91 special. Picks up again in 1996 though. Think it needed that break
Crazy talk
Putting up your style of car plates is quite popular here, usually in car dealerships, bars, man caves etc...they look much cooler than ours!
There's a line that Rodney says on this episode I've always found strange and it's when him and Del are looking through Albert's old photos and letters and he says something like "They all say the same thing, Albert Trotter lost at sea..." and then Raquel comes in and changes the subject. It just sort of highlights to me that Del and Rodney really don't know anything about Albert at all they just accepted in series 4 that he was related to them and was Grandad's brother but really at no point in the series do they actually know anything about him to be true other than what he's told them and we know from the first few episodes he appeared in that he's no stranger to lies and cons to try and get what he wants 🤔
You should watch a clip of uncle Albert's real voice....really posh sounding guy.
I feel stupid. I’m only just realising that Cornflakes were designed to be sweetened to taste and it was normal for people to add sugar. Even today, a portion of Cornflakes needs 2 spoons of sugar to be equal to a portion of Frosties. That explains why I never liked Cornflakes and I loved Frosties. Nobody told me about adding sugar.
We've still got lots of episodes to enjoy together yet! 😁 And afterwards is the prequel show 'Rock and Chips'. It follows young Del and his Mom/family. It's only three episodes long and is a lot of fun. Also written by John Sullivan who wrote Only Fools.
Don’t think of it as seasons & specials. There are 11 episodes and a lot of great moments still to come.
Love how in Albert's speech at the docks john sullivan scripted him saying "during the blitz" Instead of "during the war" . Its a small but MASSIVE detail. "During the war" evoked a laugh for years, but this wasn't the point of the scene. John had the foresight to change this just. Absolutely genius
Ive seen this episode more times than i can count but i swear this is the only time ive seen knock knock arriving outside the flat
Wouldn't say it was del fault anyone would do the same thing
The Prospect of Whitby (at 45:00) is believed to be London's oldest surviving pub.
In dominoes, when you don't have a valid piece to play on your turn, it's known as "knocking", hence the guy who kept losing being called "Knock-knock".
I really wished they didn't waste Rodney like this in series 7 as he's a real downer the whole way through. I really liked him when he was out of the way doing his office job thing. This could have been the series where he and Cassandra were starting a family. However I just do not see them as a good couple, there is never any joy between them. I cannot remember what happens as it's been 30 odd years since I saw when it turned to specials, but I don't remember much joy at all in their relationship. Maybe there is? The last episode I watched was the 1996 one as it felt like the natural end, I never watched the specials they did after that.
Another good episode from John Sullivan and even better to come. Episode 6 is Great and can't wait to see Jess's reaction to it :)) .... and then ofc we have Miami Twice " The movie " :D Sunday mornings here in Ireland just can't get any better. Have a Great week everyone!!
You know times have changed when laughing at Skoda sounds weird now
The "Who's there?" "Knock Knock" is pure writing genius
Del's French phrase about half way through is "Après moi, le déluge" - predictably it's nonsense and translates as "After me, the flood"
The main reason the series proper ended (though there were other factors too) was because the main cast were extremely busy. David Jason (Del Boy) was in a popular detective series A Touch of Frost and another ITV series Darling Buds of May, Nicholas Lyndhurst was in various things including ITV sitcom The Two of Us and then The BBC sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart (among many other projects). Even Tessa Peak Jones (Raquel) was starring in her own BBC sitcom So Haunt Me. So across the 90s people kept asking the show to come back. And the BBC loved the ratings. That's why they ended up doing several specials for the Christmas schedule
I imagine Buster Merryfield did draw on his London roots for those scenes as much of London but specifically the docklands were converted into ‘posh’ apartments and commercial space such as Canary Wharf where many of the big banks are now located in the 70s and 80s. According to Wikipedia he was a Millwall football supporter who were based on the Isle of Dogs right in the heart of the docklands.
During the scene where they are looking for Albert del comes out of a building with big blue doors seaman's mission, my dad was working on those doors at the time repairing them and he had to stop so they could film that scene for only fools.
I feel like you should end Only Fools after ‘Time on Our Hands’
Bro, no.... people act like the final trilogy is the worst thing since the holocaust or something. They are absolutely worth a watch
Theres a brilliant documentary from about 1982 with bob hoskins walking round that area of london.. talking about gentrification and chsnges to working class communities. Really good..moving.
Do you have a YouTube link or is it on iPlayer, please?
Please watch rock and chips when this finishes, short spin off
I love when Del comes back in and shouts 'Oi, you stay right where you are' like he's a Dad telling off his son😂oh and damn you are fine jess, Got a twin maybe? 😅 jk, Jess is a Stunning, contagiously charming✨woman.🤦♂️✌️She's not like some woman out here...
lol one thing ive seen in this episode is multiple reactors not like how del spoke to albert, its like they completely missed the dialogue with rodney before hand lol poor del, rodney got him into trouble with reactors on that one lmao
Man, Uncle Albert had a set of guns on him. Don't remember that at all.
There's so many more amazing moments to come. We're nowhere near the end...
As others have pointed out the Albert song wasn't commissioned for this episode but already existed. Maybe Uncle Albert and this episode were commissioned for this song! The Intro/Outro song to part 2 of the upcoming special was commissioned especially for the show though.....
It took Mike to point out to me that No Way Pedro is Del's version of No Way José 😂. Didn't put two and two together at the time, long time since I've heard that phrase
Oh yeah. I never realised that, either. Wow, all these years later and the penny's just dropped!
Don't know if its available online anywhere but there's a documentary called The Story of Only Fools and Horses which would be good to watch once you get to the end.
I second that. It's a really engaging watch.
In real life, the actor playing uncle Albert was a boxing champion in the 30a and was in the war for real as a combat trainer in jungle warefare
I have the feeling that those punches were so bad because he actually knows how to box. It was probably hard for a former boxer to throw a real punch while looking like he didn’t know what he was doing.
It's sad that we're into the final stages of Only Fools now. If you want a few alternatives for when this slot opens up, David Jason (Del) also stars as one of the main 3 characters in Open All Hours, and plays an old man in 2 episodes of Porridge, both hilarious comedies starring Ronnie Barker.
Open All Hours is hardly ever reacted to but for me, it's in the top 5 best written British TV comedy shows of all time!
Buster was a boxing champion as a schoolboy, and during ww2 he became the Southern Command army boxing champion.
No way Pedro is still one of my favourite Del-isms. He isn't trying to get it to stick as a new saying, it's a continuation of the joke that Del gets languages wrong, even Spanish names. He thinks he's saying it right 😂
whilst it's true ofah is almost over it also means we are edging towards the best episode of all time
What's that for you? The next one "three men a woman and a baby" is my personal favourite
Howl every time I hear “Knock knock knocked him out” 🤣 it’s deffo Uncle Albert’s best episode. Up next is one of my favourites 😭
Yay, my favourite time of the week. This is the series that made me sign up to yout patreon account so could enjoy the full episodes with you. So enjoying seeing this with you
Same here
Since you're already thinking about the end - I really recommend taking a second look at the very first episode once you reach the end. SO MUCH TIME HAS PASSED and it's 22 years where society changed A LOT.
They should react to their own reaction of it. They can laugh at how they didn't laugh when Trigger called Rodney "Dave" because they didn't yet know themselves that he was called Rodney. Grandad says cheeseburger too. That was good.
In next week’s episode, please watch to the end of the outro credits
After OFAH I’d recommend Rock and Chip (OFAH prequel series & some actors your recognise 😉) or Green Green Grass (Boycie and Marlene in the countryside with some Greta characters)
Yesss I love the green green grass!!
please make sure to do the upcoming Miami twice episode as one reaction
Hopefully they do it as two separate episodes as it first came out, but if they could do them back to back that would be ideal.
"What's this 10 year gap in your employment history here?" "Oh I got lost "😂
Cup of tea. In the queue for Glastonbury tickets. OFAH with Regeneration Nation. Almost perfect (perfect if I actually manage to buy tickets 🤣).
It’s funny how, with all the music they used in the show and then having to cut later for home media because of copyright, the fact that ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’ still manages to stay in is a miracle. I guess Paul McCartney really loves the show.
The song is a real Paul McCartney song Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey , fits perfectly
The song is called "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" by Paul McCartney - It's not actually made for Only Fools, but perfectly fits regardless!
The Christmas trilogy in 1996 is the real end of the show.
The show in everybody’s hearts ends with the Xmas 1996 trilogy, and that was the end….it was only huge pressure from the public to bring it back after 7 years in 2003
you guys should definately do the miami episodes in one, like a movie, without a week break
See I hated the Miami twice, was the only one I ever disliked and thought the whole thing was cringey
I loveee the Paul McCartney song in this it’s such a perfect feature
They were yesterday’s newspapers😂
Just a heads up, there should be a small post credit scene at the end of the next episode.
I'm not sure there is?
Like the reference to that song, a reference to the fallen soldiers in the Vietnam War
Granted theres about a dozen specials after this season, but the fact we’re into the final seasons of OFAH, Peep Show and Gavin and Stacey simultaneously 😢
Still some excellent episodes after series 7, especially the 95 Christmas trilogy
Greetings from Zante. “Who’s there” “Knock Knock” 😂😂😂😂😂
Zante. My favourite place ❤️
"Who's there?" "Knock knock" and "Knock Knock knocked him out" are such great lines 😅
