Gavin & Stacey - S3E1 'The Christening'

Just want to throw Marion and Geoff hat in the ring. Rob Brydon is hilarious and I reckon Jess would get it, Mike maybe not…
To see/hear Robs ‘pipes’ in action, have a look at this clip of Mr Brydon singing at an Elvis convention… I’m sure Jess will love it 🥰 https://youtu.be/wlAlMTWUKuo?si=vgqkfhdPOgOhgJ4l
https://youtu.be/IUavBwwQjeg?si=6ZFCCi8q24KCGENP
Try watch the trip if you want some classic Rob Brydon.
'Dolly Parton sings Jolene in Gibberish (Welsh) in recording released after her death' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw8d3ddpz8dlo ''"Some of my mother's people, the Owens, are from there [Wales]," Parton later told Wales Online. "I've been there about three times and it always feels good because it feels like family."
The church vicar in this episode is the barman who lifts the bar that delboy falls through in OFAH.. just a little fun fact
Smithy's mum is played by Pam Ferris, who also played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda
Fun fact, there were three babies playing Neil in this series (due to filming regulations), and one of those babies went on to play him as a child in the 2019 special and then as a teen in the 2024 finale! I think knowing that adds a lot when watching those specials. Also at the end of the third series, I hope you appreciate the 10 year wait we had before the 2019 special, and then another five years for the finale!
Fun fact they use the same baby through the series including the Christmas specials years later.
meeting Smithy's mother lowkey always makes me sad, like no wonder he imprinted on Gavin and the Shipman's in general
This whole show is such a comfort watch for me, must have seen so many times, but I adore these characters they're all so full of heart
You guys really should watch Fresh Meat! I think you’d love every episode
I know they're playing up the Welsh/Rugby thing but Barry is a football-centric town so Gav was unlucky his work colleagues only play 'touch-Rugby'. In reality there's a good chance there would be plenty of lads playing 5/6-a-side Football. 'Touch-Rugby' is rare. No-one should get the Owain Hughes/No I don't joke because the writers made it up as Welsh in-joke, which in reality doesn't mean anything, which excludes Gavin and makes him feel isolated
Just got home from a full day in Barry in the ambulance, now to do this ♥️
I’m just here to see who is today’s national treasure in Britain. 😂. I’m not sure it has the shine it used to have. Not when about 83% of folk appear to be one.
Man I can't believe I never gave this show a chance. When it first come out I watched a few mins and switched off, didn't understand what the fuss was about. Now I love it and I'm tempted sometimes to just watch all episodes one weekend but I like watching it with regenerationaltv and trying my best not to give in
Make sure you wait 10 years between the end of season 3 and the 2019 Christmas special like we all did 🤣
If you like Rob Brydon, you need to check out Marion & Geoff. Not too well known, but a really good show.
Only Jess would get the subtleties
The wait between these reactions videos is too long 🥲
Although not as long as the wait we had between this series and the 2019 special and 2024 finale!
Doris is a legend. She used to live down the road from my mother 😊
For Bryns song Maggie John was meant to be keeping time on the drums but she couldn't do it. They kept her drumming in as it was funnier than doing it properly.
The Owain Hughes joke was a Red Herring to confuse viewers - after hearing it, everyone was asking about it for days/weeks after. 🤣
It's a generalism but the Welsh are renowned for their singing voices and choirs. Seems that there's something in their mix in the Welsh Valleys.
And here’s 20 minutes of Rob talking mostly about Elvis and from a show he did in the US if you want to watch it in your own time https://youtu.be/pHgrVTLHeSQ?si=ok7cDFhaK8yNLk2O
One for Jess, Rob sings Elvis… https://youtu.be/wlAlMTWUKuo?si=iCG2GZbS-wABHblP
I think "There's the salad 🖕" might be the best bit in the entire series 😆
The song Bryn sings is a famous anti-apartheid song about the South Africa apartheid - which is why the others in the church share some strange looks. Its a bizarre choice of song to choose to sing at a christening. Even more strange is "Barry" from Extras sang it at a bowls championship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr7WChCUAXI
I'm so happy they're liking this show I was worried we were gonna get Father Partridge'd 😂
Shout out to the lads at 5* Fish Bar for the chip shop scene with Smithy
You guys should see if you can find the 12 days of christmas mini doc about the first christmas special 🙌
But Stacey turned the TV on and *didn’t* get Pobl y Cwm…
Rugby in Wales is traditionally the main sport whilst in England the primary sport is football.
Owain Hughes sounds like Owe Wayne Hughes a little. So do you Owain Hughes?
The joke doesn’t have a punchline. Its a red herring designed to frustrate Gavin and the audience.
Where’s the salad? Where’s the salad?…
Doubt you noticed that Smithy's mum is Pam Ferris who played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda.
“Why is he wearing a dress?” “I don’t know” - I don’t know why but this always kills me 😆
Every American reactor needs to look up Noel Edmonds and Bill Oddie before watching any British comedy.
B Oddie? That’s Bill Oddie!
Oh my that whole scene with Doris and Bryn by the buffet was brilliant
This is my favourite Patreon day of the week. So glad you are enjoying it.
Jess is slowly turning into 1960s Ed McMahon with all the 'Hey ohhhhh's 😂 I guess that makes Mike Johnny. and the Welsh impressions are still distinctly Indian. I'm here for it.
Much better to hear unfiltered Doris in this one, unlike the version we had last week 🙂
32:00 It's normal to refer to a hymn by its first line, although the vicar used the first two which is a bit unusual. Most hymns don't have titles as such. Although the tunes do, they can be paired with different hymns if the words scan. That particular tune has an interesting history, it was originally a Welsh folk song which was appropriated by the church and turned into a hymn. God clearly isn't bothered by YouTube content matches 🙂 https://hymndescants.org/st-denio
Smithy's mum is Pam Ferris, something of a 'national treasure' actor in the UK; been in lots of things.
And another week to wait for the next ep! My favourite day of the week this is! Im so glad you guys decided too react to this show! This is a true depiction of British family life compared to other shows, this always feels way moe real! 💚💜💚💜
The photo of Gavin by the bed is amusing . I’m so broody but I’m too old and poor 🤣. I miss mine being babies so much 💔I am also bereft.
I bet Rob Brydon couldn't wait to sing, just surprised he didn't pull out a Ronnie Corbett impression.
The vicar, who’s been in a few episodes of the show now, is the same actor as the barman when Del Boy falls through the bar in Only Fools and Horses.
How have I never noticed this?!
Can't wait to tell my grandma she's fluent in Gibberish 😅😉
My girlfriends Welsh, I need to say that to her 🤣
Neal Noel Edmond Smith. Just realised that his initials spell out Nes 🤔
There’s a good 56 minute programme called Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell I hope you watch when you’ve finished the series. Similar to the Friday Night Dinner one you watched
Jumping the gun a bit, they’ve only just started season 3 🤣
Are they hinting that Ness’ Dad had something to do with Princess Diana’s death? In the first ever episode Ness talks about dating Dodi Fayed and then her Dad says he’s not seen Bryn and Gwen since Diana’s funeral and has to keep a low profile?
I’d never thought of it like that but it wouldn’t surprise me 🤣
Pam Ferris who plays Smithy mum was Trunchball in Matilda, She is a brilliant actress, I also loved her with David Jason in the Darling Buds of May
She’s also in Harry Potter as Aunt Marge
In the UK "having a slash" is slang for taking a pee. Urinating. 😁
Royle family soon please
I find most American reactors struggle with that show.
Please watch the documentary about the finale when you’ve finished the series, I promise you’ll love it!
Agreed it's a really good watch
“I prefer it in the back, anyway!” PAM-LAR! Is that a double entendre? And does Mick know about this? 🤣
Where's the salad? Where's the salad? THERE'S THE SALAD, now leave me alone. 🤣🤣
It’s the Trunchbull from Matilda (smithy’s mum) 🤣
Maaaate, 32 years old and watched it so many times and just put 2 and 2 together
Rob Brydon is a national treasure i think.. i enjoy everything he does 😀
Me and my family still quote "There's your salad, now leave me alone!" whenever we can 🤣😅 Margaret John, absolute legend ❤️
Going into school after this episode aired, it was like a shared experience. Everyone was yelling ‘You slag!’ to each other in the corridors all morning.
Yeah, it's a shame that nobody watches the same stuff anymore. When I was at school it was Monty Python and the lack of that shared experience has to be a bad thing for the unity of people.
Gavalaaarrr
One of my fav eps coming up this season 🌊☀️🩳🏖️
Try and avoid filtered versions of things You missed some great lines in Xmas special
I think this might just be the US version, hopefully there’s a link out there for them to watch the UK version!
I love how the update pings at exactly 7.01am every single Wednesday when I'm on the train to work...perfection 🤭🥳 Jumping in now
Season 3! Cough cough please watch Him & Her cough
Him and her ain't bad, very good, I prefer to go further back, and see 2 pints of lager
FIRST!
I wonder who will play you in the live action adaptation in the story of commenting first
