Only Fools and Horses - S7E0 - Rodney Come Home (1990 Christmas Special)

Rodney should be grateful. He wouldn't have a bloody job in the first place he wasn't married to the bosses daughter.
Thank you so much for the membership. Your channel stops me feeling lonely
You’re in good company here 😊 There are plenty of people in the chat who are in the exact same boat and feel like they’re watching with friends when they come here ❤️ Enjoy it, you’ve got soooo much to catch up on.
You can see Derek (David Jason) trying not to laugh during the uuugghhh scene 🤣
Shocked Albert is literally one of my favourite scenes of all time 🤣🤣 even David Jason can’t keep a straight face haha
When I first saw this as a kid I remember crying laughing at uncle Albert's shocked face. So good
This is not 1933. Good shout out to one of Nicolas lyndhursts other programs called - goodnight sweetheart
i hope you guys react to Open All Hours :)
Love rewatching only fools ... but watching it with you 2 waiting for your reactions to what I know is coming .. Albert's reaction lol 😆
Its the little things...i loved how they were playing in the niteclub when Del offered to hold her hand in the dark Lisa Stansfields 'This Is The Right Time.....to believe in Love'
Love seeing David Jason nearly break during Albert's surprised face scene 😂
Paula Ann Bland, who played Michelle, had previously been a regular in iconic teen drama/soap opera Grange Hill, where she was part of the same "class" as Steven Woodcock (Jevon) and Mark Burdis (Colin the mechanic in To Hull and Back).
Definitely Alberts funniest episode imo
Sunday mornings and as a retired bloke watching these two watching ofah for the first time, slightly enjoying the fact that Jess and Mike find it hard to come to terms with an episode end without a feel good factor like they have in the USA is a bonus, they are learning the British way bless their little cotton socks
Please watch Goodnight Sweetheart starring Rodney, I mean Nicholas Lyndhurst straight after you've finished watching this. If Cassandra thinks that Rodders is a two timing cheat whilst Raquel thinks that Delboy is a sexist chauvinistic pig, they both have nothing on time traveller Gary Sparrow 😂
I still can't believe how much Mike and Jess still misunderstand Del. He didn't say we won't tell your dad about this so he could still get the cheap printing, he said it so Rodney wouldn't lose his job.
I think it was a bit of both tbh.
I’m going to find a little bloke, I’m gonna have a fight
On my way home from a super heavy festival, wrapped up in a quilt on the back seat and so ready to chill out watching this speeding up the M1!
First time I have seen Mickey Pearce without his trademark hat and suit. I wonder if they were trying to bring him in to the 90s now it is 1990.
Where the show started leaning too far away from comedy towards melodrama. However still contains one of the show's finest scenes: ("EURRRRGHHHH!")
Going back a bit…Mike have you taken Jess to an opera ?
I love Raquel, perfect match for Del! 🥰 Will always love seeing David Jason try and fail to stop a smile during Albert's "A GIRL" scene 😂
Such brilliant writing and acting that is of the highest level. This took the show even further beyond a pretty funny sitcom to the pinnacle it became. It so lovely re watching it with you guys.
Mike the song Rodney was playing (Rebel Yell) wasnt in San Andreas 😅 but the song White Wedding was (both by Billy Idol). Close! 😆
Cassandra's tantrum might be some of the worst acting ever broadcast
They should never have tried to make that scene comedic.
I reckon Gwneth Strong's best performance was on the casting couch. She can't act to save herself.
Rude
There are some outtakes somewhere but I haven't seen them for a long time, where Del couldn't carry on recording when Uncle Albert was doing his surprised sound! He had to repeat it so many times and you can see David Jason's face (Del Boy) during this episode still trying not to laugh.
Beautiful episode So well written by the genius john Sullivan, how 1 man can make us laugh, cry and then laugh again as it feels so much like real life and not a tv show
Mike & Jess , someone may have said already but this special was in effect the curtain raiser/episode 1 set-up for the next series, the last proper one, which came quickly after when it was on TV early 1991. Strap in.
23:27 Goodnight Sweetheart foreshadowing....
Still lots of happiness and fun to come!
Don't worry, it's OFAH...Who Dares Wins! Believe it or not, you're looking at a pair of winners and I wouldn't have spent my childhood looking forward to this show every week if they wasn't 😁!
I've always liked the reference to Nicholas Lyndhurst's then other show in this episode.
It hadn't actually started yet, it was nearly 3 years away.
This had a very downbeat ending...so British
I think an occasional introspective episode works really well for character development. They were focused on the main narrative rather than side characters, which seems like the right choice. The only strange thing is it’s a bit gloomy for a Christmas episode.
Too many spoilers in these replies GUYZ!!
Definitely not the happiest episode this, but... definitely one of Uncle Albert's best episodes, he is brilliant in this. "AAAAGGGGHHH A GIRL!!!" I don't know if you spotted but David Jason breaks character a little during that sequence of Albert getting the timing wrong oh his reaction, fighting to hold back laughing 😂
This episode never really was ever 1 of my favourites, funny parts bit of drama and story progression but always was left feeling something was missing, either way decent reaction
Quite a serious episode in the show but I really like it. I think it was needed.
Uncle Albert’s finest moment. To this day, I still roll up at him looking horrified. Another great reaction guys 👍😊
Can’t believe Jess managed to get Boy George to record one of these reactions with her
Thank god for Uncle Albert in this episode bringing much needed light to the heavy stuff.
lol like the dolphins
Unusually for a Christmas special, this was a prelude to a series that started a week later.
Watched this episode countless times and first time I’ve realised Del says Richard Attenborough instead of David Attenborough haha Well I guess Jurassic Park could be labeled a nature show - but it of course hadn’t been released yet!
A very good episode, but I think a scene or two with the side characters would have given it a boost.
I don't know what I'll do on a sunday once this finally ends. It's the highlight of my week 😆
they could do Rock and Chips its prequel
Is it just me or are the voices on this episode a bit out of sync?
Not just you, it was the same for me. Not by much but they were out of sync.
Series 7 next, ive not seen that one in years so looking forward to the next couple of months 🙂
Not one of the best episodes but does give us the uncle Albert reaction which is an all-time classic
Awwww… love the intro guys! ❤️
It's probably be said 100 times but, are you guys going to watch the prequel 'Rock and Chips' after you've finished OFAH ? - with James Buckley as young Del 😁
No, don't spoilt it that James plays him, their reaction would be epic 😅☺️
Great episode, but what winds me up is if Rodney is back at the flat with a bunch of roses, after Del told Cassie he'd gone to the flicks with Tanya. How is it that Cassie is not smart enough to figure out there must be some sort of breakdown in communications? If he's getting his card stamped by Tanya, why's he back at the flat!? Jesse is right though, they need ways to keep bringing them all back together, or the main dynamic just fades away.
Have you never heard of guilt flowers? It's midnight Rodney had time to go to the pictures and be back at the flat with roses and champagne
The first time I saw Uncle Albert 'overreacting' to when he hears Rodney is going out became my all-time favourite comedy scene. I laughed so hard. 🤣 You can see David Jason nearly lose it too when he tells Uncle Albert "not yet!" I'm so glad you obviously enjoyed that scene too! xxx
It’s hilarious 🤣 saw this episode so many times and still laugh!
So funny at the point Del saying Raquel will give him a sign Jess is nodding and Mike is shaking his head 😂
Uncle Albert acting shocked , still is one of my favourite go to places if I need a laugh , even Del couldn’t keep a straight face , I wonder how many takes it took
27:50 "No man is an island". Except for Barry. Sorry, reflex dad joke.
And the Isle Of Man.
Del has matured lots by this point. If this happened in series 4 or before, I would believe he only was doing this for Rodney for cheap printing. By now he’s 100% doing it out of love for his brother.
David Jason has " a touch of frost" on his sideburns and Mike says Del looks younger? Damn Mike, wish I had you as a hype man 15 years ago...
Loving the hats and dolphins....great stuff
I feel it's definitely worth mentioning that Trigger's dolphin was not a balloon. He is an Environmental Hygienist so naturally he will be adverse to single use plastics. His dolphin was more like a lilo (or pool float as an American would say) than a balloon.
It’s fair to say that the person who plays Cassandra is not the best actor in the world. All the other main actors are very talented though.
That’s true. But let’s be careful about spoilers here.
Love this underrated episode . There’s a real melancholy and depth to it that you don’t usually get from the show. It feels more human than purely comedic, and underneath the laughs there’s a genuine sadness running through the whole episode. It shows this show could be bittersweet, deep and genuinely moving while still being brilliant comedy. It shows no matter what , Rodney will always have Del Boy . A sad but still beautiful and poignant moment at the end.
What if she comes home with a man 😂😂😂😂 that cracked me up
Cassandra is incredibly selfish. She doesn't see a marriage; she thinks she can be "independent" well... no, not anymore. And Rodney was being childish in his response; he would have had the audience siding with him all the way up until the moment he asked another bloody woman!
They are both childish and selfish. Neither communicates well nor are willing to compromise. Rodney threw a tantrum because his wife is career focused, has an active social life and wasn't at his beck and call. He's annoyed they don't have anything in common when he spent their dating life pretending to like all the same things. Now they are married he expects her career and interests to take a back seat which is not fair. If they were slightly more mature, they would discuss the problems in their marriage and come to a compromise that worked for them both e.g. share cooking duties and set time each week that they spend together.
This episode is a good but sad one for me, but for a completely different reason. My Nan absolutely loved OFAH. She watched it religiously, as we all did in our family. 1990 had already been a terrible year. My Grandad died in August, and my Nan was devastated. They had been together since they were teenagers, so losing him hit her incredibly hard. Then, just before Christmas, she climbed onto a box to get some Christmas wrapping paper down for my brother. She slipped and fell, landing against the radiator. She fractured a rib and broke her ankle. For as long as I could remember, she had suffered with blood clots, but she was never somebody who sat around. Even in her 70s, she cleaned her house every day, cooked for the family, went shopping by herself and carried heavy bags home. She was always on the go. But that Christmas she was bedridden because of the fall. This was the last OFAH episode she ever saw, and I remember watching it with her. On New Year's Eve, she collapsed in the bathroom. She was taken to hospital and passed away on New Year's Day 1991. So this episode will always have a very special, if sad, place in my heart, simply because it was the last one my Nan and I ever watched together. More than 35 years later, I still think about that whenever I see it. As for the episode itself, the weakest link for me has always been Cassandra's acting. I know a lot of people say it was deliberately played that way to show how childish both she and Rodney were being, but for me it was just far too over the top. The bit where she throws her books down and has the tantrum makes me cringe every single time I watch it. 😬 I know what they were trying to portray, but it just doesn't work for me. In fact, I thought her acting throughout this particular episode was pretty poor. That aside, it's still an episode that will always mean something to me for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the storyline. Anyway, great reaction, guys. Really enjoyed watching it. 👍
'.........like who gets custody of Barbie & Ken?!'........ classic line!!!
Underrated this episode, one of my faves
Not the greatest episode but arguably the funniest scene in OFAH history!
That and the falling through the bar scene in series 6 😂
Class! It’s not hard
Wow this is early?
It’s really weird to me when Rodney brags about being successful to Cassandra, as the job was basically a handout from her dad. I suppose that’s part of the problem, that he feels insecure.
Rodney believes he passed his diploma to get that job. Only Del, Albert and Mr Jamille know otherwise.
Rodney is a dick boss. At the same time, Michelle seems like a crap secretary. Hate to say it, but I don’t think Alan is great at hiring people.
To be fair, you can’t blame Alan for the bad decision of hiring Rodney, after all he has no idea that his diploma was essentially purchased rather than earned. On paper Rodney should have been more than capable in that role.
This was actually supposed to be to be the first episode of Series 7, but the BBC had asked John Sullivan that if he were to extend the episode by another 25 minutes, then they could put it out as the Christmas Special, acting as the prelude for Series 7, which began airing less than a week later.
I had a kiss me quick hat circa 86 holidaying in Blackpool. Happy Sunday people!
😂😂
A GIRL 😳
Gonna be in incredible pain at 11am, so I'm gonna make the most of this 💪
Good luck with the vasectomy. It will be fine but I'll be thinking of you at 11am anyway.
7am here in Ireland and what better way to start my Sunday than with Mike & Jess and the best TV show of all Time!!!! Bonnet de Douche :)))
Creme de la Menthe
