If I ever met the person who decided powers were a blessing, I would let my own power loose without any regrets whatsoever. Although, given the way things were going, I'd probably just end up doing that regardless…
My trigger event wasn't any worse than anybody else's. A situation that worsened a bit too much a bit too fast, leading to me passing out normal and waking up…not. A tale as old as time, only mine differed from the source material.
The first thing I noticed after I triggered was the hunger, a gnawing put in my stomach that encompassed my every thought, consuming my mind with pain and emptiness until little else remained. I still haven't had a good night's sleep since.
My first victim was a good samaritan that had just happened to be passing by the particular alley I was hunched in. He had attempted to help me, yet the moment I saw him the hunger grew immensely, and suddenly I was not myself.
I can still recall the horrified look on his face as I extended my hand, blood red tendrils of pure energy springing forth and surging into every orifice he had, sucking the very life essence out of him until he was nothing but an empty husk of barely warm flesh and bone.
In my frenzy, I took notice of nothing but the fact that whatever I was taking from him was feeding the hunger inside me, filling the monstrous hole in my very being.
I awoke from my feeding horrified and worst of all, still hungry. My soul begged for me to find another like the man I had just consumed and feast until the hole inside of me was filled, and I knew it was only a matter of time until I couldn't resist the urge any longer, so I made a choice.
I decided that if I was going to be a slave to my hunger, I would keep my sights set to those who deserved it. The Asian Bad Boys just happened to be the closest target.
After around a week, the ABB ceased to be, nearly all of those affiliated with the gang either dead or in hiding, including the mighty Lung. He had taken offense to me sucking the life out of his subordinates, and had confronted me one night along with Oni Lee.
Whether he was there to kill me or recruit, I wasn't sure and was even less willing to find out. I had unleashed the full force of my hunger on him the moment I recognized the gang leader.
The Dragon of Kyushu hadn't had the chance to grow more than a few feet before my curse sucked him dry. Oni Lee faced a similar fate, the soul sucking tendrils merely finding his real body using his ones as a jumping point, sending him tumbling down from the roof he had perched himself on.
I had gone on a rampage after that, searching for the dregs of the Asian gang and sucking them dry along with whoever was unlucky enough to have been in their presence at the time. By the time the haze cleared, I had killed possibly hundreds of people, men, women, and children alike.
And yet despite having absorbed the essence of over a hundred people, the hunger had just grown and grown and grown seemingly without end.
It was driving me mad, and I wasn't content to simply lay down and let myself fade away, I was much too selfish for that.
There was only one thing I could do. And unfortunately for those around me, I had just enough strength to do it.
From this high up in the city, everything seemed so insignificant. Everything but the gnawing hunger inside of me.
I took a small breath, apologizing to whoever was listening for what I was about to do, before raising my hands to the sky as if praying to some god despite knowing none was listening.
My curse took things from there, crackling red tendrils expanding with frenzied hunger to find any morsel of energy to consume. I closed my eyes, tears rolling down my face as the first bits of energy reached me, trying to fill the void in my soul.
I could just barely hear the screams of those the tendrils reached, shrieking in terror and futilely trying to escape, before they were mercifully silenced as the life was ripped from their unwilling bodies.
It took several minutes for the deed to be done, and during that time several heroes and villains had flown toward my perch in an attempt to stop me or put me down. They fell from the sky long before they reached me, soaring to the ground like a bird with clipped wings.
I shuddered in revulsion as I felt the increased energy that I had come to associate with parahumans. No matter the power, no matter the skill, it didn't matter. Brute, breaker, shaker, stranger, all of them, the Dark consumed them all one after the other, until finally, I was the only living thing left in the Bay, cape or no.
I lowered my arms slowly, gazing down at the now empty city below me. It was done, I was the only thing left alive for miles. And yet…
I sobbed as the last dregs of energy reached me. Falling to my knees roughly as the ever-present hunger failed to abate even slightly. Even with all the energy I had consumed, all the souls I had sent to the beyond, regardless of age or health…
It still wasn't enough. The Dark still wasn't satisfied.
I wailed to the sky with grief as I realized all my efforts had amounted to nothing.

Wind whistled through the empty streets of Brockton Bay. The previously packed city was silent and eerie, cars laying strewn around the road or burning as they rested against whatever they had crashed into, their operators no longer able to use the controls.
Along the side of one of these streets, a line television was still running, showing the face of a dour news caster as he spoke to an audience that was no longer there.
"This is Harris Gauge here, bringing all of you the latest in important Parahuman updates from the safety of your own home." The man on the television spoke, "Though… I suppose safety is relative now, given all that has happened and is still happening as I speak to you."
He cleared his throat before bringing a hand up to run through his thinning hair, "The most recent S-class threat, codename Scourge, has been been sighted in eastern Europe and has begun to continue their rampage there after devastating the America's. As always, any heroes or villains in their path have been impotent to stop them, merely adding to the death toll."
"Scourge initially made landfall in Dublin, Ireland and the death toll is already calculated to be in the hundreds of thousands. Mass evacuations of Ireland and Scotland have already begun, though most sources believe they are too late."
He sighed despondently, reading from the sheet in front of him like "The Triumvirate has failed to stop them, both Eidolon and Legend losing their lives in the attempt, while Alexandria is nowhere to be found and presumed dead as well. The CUI is in shambles and none of the European hero teams are attempting any defense, not that anybody blames them." .
"Thinkers currently believe Scourge's effective range is increasing steadily, and that if it continues to increase at the rate it has, will likely encompass continents before the month is over." He sighed again, placing the document on the desk and folding his hands in front of him, looking directly at the camera.
"I'm afraid, dear listeners, that this might be the end of all humanity as we know it. I am truly sorry to deliver such news, but I'm afraid there's simply nobody else willing to do it. My suggestion is that those of you who see this go and spend some time with your family before the end. Live your last moments in comfort. Once again I'm sorry, and may God bless you all." He finished solemnly, and the tv screen's light flickered off, never to return.
The Dark consumes all.
