About Chapter 15 (Dev Diary)

Following up on the reflections I shared about the difficulties and challenges involved in creating Chapter 14, I also wanted to write a bit about how I plan to approach Chapter 15. My main concerns are two: increasing the release cadence and moving the plot forward.

As I mentioned, one of the main difficulties in releasing Chapter 14 was delivering a coherent narrative unit within such a large event, with many characters and branching paths intertwined through sequential and alternative events, which made it hard to cut the content at any given point.

The narrative structure I’m planning for Chapter 15, and possibly beyond, is different, focusing on smaller, more self-contained events for each character. Also, given where we are in the story, there can be multiple relationships and plotlines running in parallel that are mutually exclusive. With that in mind, I want to establish a central narrative thread with independent, character-specific scenes orbiting around it. This should allow me to break the chapter up more easily and release smaller chunks, or even standalone scenes.

The main drawback of this approach is that updates will be less meaty, but I don’t want to go back to taking 5–6 months to release new content. As a result, a given update might not include content for the characters someone is particularly interested in, or it might offer a somewhat shorter, more linear narrative experience, one that’s best enjoyed by exploring different paths and scenes across multiple save files.

In the end, my main goal is to make the overall structure of the game and the player experience as solid and enjoyable as possible, even if that means individual releases are a bit lighter. At this point, the branching nature of the game pretty much requires it.

To speed up development, I’ll try to apply some version of the 80/20 rule (more like 70/30), focusing on limiting the elements that add a lot of workload without significantly contributing to the progression of the story. One of the things that took up an enormous amount of time in the last chapter was animations and cosmetic variations, so I’ll try to be more restrained with them whenever possible (of course, I’m writing this while working on several new animations for the next chapter). I’ve been wanting to add cosmetic variations for Ian (beard, tattoos) for a long time, but now I’m actually glad I haven’t done it yet—and I’ll probably implement them later on, retrospectively.

I’m also going to try to make better and more deliberate use of ellipses. I almost always feel compelled to include the ‘mandatory scene’ with this or that character in every new chapter, since I know many of you are looking forward to interacting again with your favorite characters, and I myself have plenty of ideas and illustrations I want to include; after all, it’s an erotic game.

However, the scenes keep becoming more ambitious and complex, and more possibilities keep opening up. The game could go on indefinitely, but I want to move the story forward. So I’m going to focus on scenes that are new or that significantly advance the plot, and give those the time and attention I believe they deserve. I have some ideas in mind that I think will both satisfy and surprise you, and right now it’s more important to reach those and do them justice than to add more casual scenes with characters who have already had their fair share of content, even though it’s quite hard for me to hold back and cut ideas as they come up (this was especially difficult and painful with Chapter 14).

Anyway, I hope that with these general guidelines, development of the next chapter will be faster and more manageable (though I’ve already started writing and I’m already facing the narrative complexity it’s going to require).

I’m really looking forward to continuing to share this experience with you and putting Ian and Lena’s fates in your hands.

I'm so looking forward to chapter 15. Chapter 14 was wild, but I really missed Holly and Cherry. Looking forward to seeing both of them. Also eager to see where the Gillian thing goes.

Also, now that Lena's broken her MMF cherry, looking forward to to more Lena sandwich threesomes (and foursomes, I'm sure).

As a fan of the saga, I hope this project can continue to grow. My hope is to see a development of Ian and Lena's relationship with various facets, including the “homewreckers” one. The story lacks a real character (perhaps female) who can put a spanner in the works of the two protagonists' relationship. It would be a rather intriguing and “spicy” dynamic.

Ivy can be that spanner, and she is already trying to get Ian away from Lena, or break them up so she can have Lena to herself, but just my opinion

Thanks for the inside-view. Interesting how you are juggling the ideas and paths. And your 70:30-rule sounds very promising. If they were for free, I would take a lot of modifications or, much better, chlothes-selection with impact on the story. But yeah, your novel has to offer so much more that having a tattoo, expecially a meaningless (not the current one for Lena) does add almost nothing but takes up a lot of precious time. This really sounds good. Glad to see you make some needed cuts. By the way: ORS is still the benchmark for a real-impact-choices-game. It also excells in a usually boring theme - real life. Where others need orcs and super-sexual aliens, you work magic with "just" regular people's problems and wishes. Love your game!

You're doing a stellar job with this game! Keep up the good work, and at a pace that is sustainable for you!

Wait what do you mean Bearded and Tatted Ian? Cause I’m all for it I fear that would make him way more hotter in my eyes and more deserving of Cherry lmao😭

In the gamecode there are yet unused variables to those things for Ian. Holly also have several free 'slots' for tattoos.

Your line of reasoning sounds logical. Ultimately, it has to work for you as the creator. As a fan, I support it! ⚜️

You're doing the Lord's work over there, I can't imagine holding a whole world like this in your mind. I hope people will be kind, but you can't please everyone, so in the end, you have to put yourself and the story first and the audience will follow. QUESTION: how does this level of narrative upkeep compare to creating GGGB? Especially at this latter point in the story? (Obviously GGGB had only one POV and less characters collectively, but still...)

Well I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with for chapter 15. I hope you keep chapter 13 in mind though, which can be a really short experience for certain versions of Lena and Ian if they don't have many partners, or in Lena's case, haven't pursued certain types of content (like going all out on StalkFap. So you should consider how you balance the chapters so something interesting happens both for players with many sexual options and a very sexual playthrough, and players with more restrained choices. In regards to retroactive content like the Ian visual additions, I hope you keep this in mind for sexual content too. You don't need to go overboard or anything, but I still feel like there could be some retroactive additions in that regard as well. For example chapter 14 could still use a sexting scene with Lena and Holly I feel, since that romance is new and it blocks many other sexual options in that chapter and we haven't really had any lesbian sexting opportunities. When will be the next time Holly and Lena are really apart for a whole chapter, right? :D Have fun developing ch. 15, I'm looking forward to see where the story takes us from the McMansion. <3

This is a very interesting and reasonable post that I probably wouldn't have published on April 1st
