I met him briefly at a convention years ago. I was waiting for some friends to meet me, and found a quiet spot out of the way behind one of the big halls in an alley. There was a small table set up with pitchers of ice water and glasses. I was reading the convention catalogue when a door opened up and this older gentleman came into the alley accompanied by a wall of sound, cheers and murmuring from hundreds of people in the convention hall he was just leaving. We looked at each other for a moment, I was cosplaying as an anime character with grey skin, and had been extra careful with painting myself so the effect worked and I wasn’t smearing on my clothes or the surroundings. He certainly expected me to say something, but I just gestured to the water, which seemed to have been his goal. He gave me a smile and poured himself a glass, took a long sip and then asked me who I was dressed as. I told him I was a Naruto character called Zabuza, and showed him the massive sword I had made from cardboard, bamboo and aluminum. He laughed and said it was very impressive. I thanked him, and told him that my girlfriend would have liked to meet him. She had first seen him in Robin Hood: Men in Tights and had loved his brief role in that movie. He said hardly anyone brought up that role, which was a shame as he’d had a lot of fun playing it. He finished his water, we shook hands and he left. My friends showed up not long after and I got the disbelieving envy treatment, but my girlfriend was happy I told Sir Patrick about her love for his role in her favorite childhood movie. It’s easily my favorite celebrity memory.

I lost my dear father in 2010. Today, I feel as if I lost my stepfather. We only actually met once, but Sir Patrick’s life lessons have impacted me since my teen years in the 80’s.
