This episode was better than most of season 3 so far, course that’s not saying a lot

D
Dr. Paul Stubbs · October 14, 2026

The 2020s definitely has an identity as a decade and you will start to see it more clearly the farther it gets from "now". Once we hit 2056, you will see 2026 in old media as clearly as you see 1996 written all over this episode.

S
SWOLEXX · October 12, 2026

it definitely improves a lot in season 4. Season 1 2 and 3 are so mid and cringe that I cant watch most of them anymore... but.. you better believe I will be back.

You talked over it, but you missed a callback to City on the Edge of Forever. When Janeway is trying to use the keyboard, she refers to it as being like working with "stone knives and bear skins". As you've left the discussion for the second part, I'll save my thoughts for that. I think this 2 parter is fine. A high C or low B overall for this half. Not a fan of Silverman, but her character is not Mark Twain levels of annoying. Also they did a good job giving most of the cast a few good moments. Even had a little Resolutions callback when the Chakotay said the woman Janeway mused was her ancestor had her legs. Realistically either Tuvok should have stayed onboard and in command(especially being Vulcan), and Torres does outrank Kim. Then again they were damaged and Janeway no doubt knew Torres needed to concentrate on repairs. Still, nice to see him get to command for once. Love his response when the one officer asked if they should respond to the transmission. Must have missed the part where they were trying to remain undetected. Also. Ed Begley Jr was in Better Call Saul

all imo: It is a funny-ish meme, but I will say I hope it doesn't it doesn't become a recurring thing where you entirely skip discussions for part 1's. I tune in to watch the show with you guys and hear your thoughts, so skipping all discussion is a big bummer. You've said you want to experience it like it was experienced when it aired, and I'm pretty sure when it aired people had discussions after the part 1s. You can speculate, you can trash it, you can share whatever your authentic perspective is. But having 0 discussion really sours the experience for me. As a one time bit it's fine. But I ask/hope you don't make it a repeat thing. An uncut with no discussion loses like 80% of the appeal, and it isn't in keeping with the "watching it just like people watched it when it aired".

You know, I quite like this episode. Starling a bit too “evil billionaire”, tbh if anything he playing it down compared to what current billionaires would likely be like!

i played video games as a kid primarily Nintendo ('88 xmas) and Super Nintendo ('92 xmas). those were a big part of my childhood through high school. messed around a little bit with Playstation 2 but i sort of lost interest in video games in my 20s. i was too busy playing guitar in garage bands and chasing girls. i haven't really had any desire to go back. it's just way too fucking expensive now.

Todd · October 10, 2026

Watching this for the second time ever. I always thought it was odd that Harry was left in command and not Tuvok but it is some nice development for him. A little more insight into Tom here. To me, the script is written well. Sure they explain the bit about the car and don't show it. And the space battle between Voyager and the time ship is not shown, but I'm sure that had more to do with budget since they were filming on location. These are minor quibbles and don't take me out of the episode which overall, has a decent pace.

S
Skye Maidstone · October 9, 2026

I hate this episode but not particularly more or less than I hate almost all of this and the previous seasons. Voyager is ok to leave on in the background while you're doing something else. It rarely sucks me in like some of other (early) Trek series.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong · October 9, 2026

"Woah, Sarah Silverman?!" "Strike Three!!" xD my sides

L
Lovok · October 9, 2026

1984 baby here. Regarding video games: I played them a TON when I was a kid into my early 20s. Grew up on mostly NES, SNES, N64, and PC. I burned out on them. Game stories/mechanics got really repetitive and boring. Multiplayer games became tiresome and stressful after playing semi-competitively (Counter-Strike 1.6 & StarCraft 2 mostly) for so many years. (Predating those games, I lead a "clan" (team) as a teenager for multiplayer Star Trek: Armada [2000 release year].) In effect, I both burned out on and outgrew video games. Haven't owned one or played one for almost a decade now. Don't miss 'em. *shrug*

This is one of my favourite Voyager episodes. It's kind of goofy, but in a fun way. Can't wait for next time!

G
Greg Quinn · October 8, 2026

To respond to Josh's question about people under 50 who don't play video games, I'll respond. I remember playing Atari when I was very little, then Nintendo and Super Nintendo. I got away from video games for a few years, but when the Xbox came out my brother got it. I ended up playing Max Payne. I spent way too much time playing it At one point playing from 6 pm till 7 am the next morning (which is when I beat the game). The "afterglow" was pure regret, as I felt like hell and realized I had screwed up by sleep for essentially nothing. Since than I have only grabbed a controller here and there under unusual circumstances, but have otherwise sworn off video games.

T

L
Lovok · October 8, 2026

These episodes are a fun time. A highlight in an otherwise boring S3. Nothing remotely substantive here, but every now and then it's okay to just sit back and enjoy.

D
Darin Wagner · October 8, 2026

Gotta love the 90s tropes. Ed Begley Jr basically plays Steve Jobs (only not as evil). The Left was concerned with things like the ozone layer and right wing militias, so those things are depicted here. Hilarious how poorly this has aged.

p

it was all Al Gore's fault.

This episode is just exactly how you imagined it would be made, which is not a good thing. Feels like any random bad episode of a 1980s Steven Cannell show, lol.

I

If I realized the runtime I would have waited to binge both back to back ... 😦. Oh the horror !

W
Who North America · October 8, 2026

I love this 2-parter (and didn't like the 2-parter time travel story in DS9). This one was much more fun. Feels more like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, but no whales.

M
Muddyn · October 8, 2026

i love how Alex very meticulously listed everything that he hates in star trek time travel episodes in the last DS9 episode, only for Star trek voyager to use that list like a fucking checklist for LITERALLY THE NEXT Episode. i have a feeling i know how this one is gonna go :D

p
penoyer79 · October 10, 2026

I almost spit my drink out when that same realization hit me during this episode

N
Naglfarius · October 8, 2026

Didn't remember this was a 2 Parter, thought it was a standalone Episode. C Tier for Part One, hope the second Part gives us something.

M
MartyMc · October 8, 2026

So no commentary until part 2? Have they done this before?

R
Richard · October 8, 2026

I actually like these two parters, I’d class them as a B tier.

S
ShazD · October 8, 2026

I don't know why but I really hate this two parter. Just feels sloppy and stupid

C
Cranky Grandma · October 7, 2026

I was six years old when trek aired 1966! 67 was season 2. Seasons always started in the fall. Dang good discussion on this one. It’s how I feel about most of this season.

N
Naglfarius · October 8, 2026

yeah the discussion was on the point.

A
Actuarial Lurker · October 7, 2026

Spock in Space Seed: "Khan Noonian Singh: From 1992-1996 - the absolute ruler of a quarter of your world" McCoy: "the last of the tyrants to be overthrown" So in 1996 the Eugenics Wars had JUST ended...if the timeline is canon and intact

D
Dipper · October 8, 2026

I kinda like the idea that the time ship and sterling are the reason it’s not. Alternate timeline caused by a computer age that wasn’t supposed to happen

M
Matt Moylan · October 6, 2026

S

D
Derek Locke · October 6, 2026

I commented back in TNG days that you should save your discussion on multiple parters for the end of the final show in the arc. Glad to see you took that suggestion finally! 🤣😉

Z
Zenlike Creature · October 6, 2026

If memory serves, isn't the Eugenics War in 1997? I'm very fuzzy on the agreed lore in Star Trek. Anyway, I've always quietly enjoyed this story and now I'm older I get all nostalgic, too. I miss my lava lamps ;)

N

TA: We hate when scripts spell things out. Use some subtlety!" Voyager: Prominently highlights 1967 Starling's tattoo as a hippie, then as his present day CEO self to indicate it's the same person, but doesn't explicitly call it out. TA: 🫩

A
Actuarial Lurker · October 6, 2026

Not only did they go to ST6 for the homage - they STILL went to 1996 to torture Alex. The looks on your faces in the thumbnail is classic...

They "To Be Continued" you! Then you "To Be Continued" us! LOL! Love it. Looking forward to part 2, guys.

S
Steven Linden · October 6, 2026

I don't think the pinball machine in his office is meant to indicate that he's evil, or anything like that - it's more a signifier of "tech billionaire" like a Steve Jobs or a Bill Gates, the "new" kind of rich person in the '90s who didn't wear a suit every day and who had fun gadgets in his office.

J
Jack Mingle · October 6, 2026

Ahh yes the Evil Pinballer trope, very popular.

P

P

No discussion? No part 2? The way my video was looking I thought they were gonna jump right into part 2.

R
Rom Paris · October 6, 2026

Ed Begley Jr. will always just be "Stan Sitwell" to me.

I
Imogen S · October 6, 2026

Seen and enjoyed him in many things but for me it's always the maths teacher with an "expanding butt" spell on him in an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch 😅 Oh that and Pineapple Express: "I will take you outside and fuck you in the street!" while brandishing shotgun. What a legend EBJr is!

T
Todd Miller · October 6, 2026

Did you notice the Talosian on Rain's desk (Keeper from "The Cage" and "The Managerie") or the Botany Bay with rocket boosters in Rain's window?

K
KingPin124 · October 6, 2026

They focused in on his arm tattoo, because at the very beginning of the episode they also zoom in on it while he's holding his radio by the campfire. A very simple way of showing that it's the same guy.

K
KingPin124 · October 6, 2026

I can't stand Sarah Silverman's politics, but thankfully that's not the part of her that I usually focus on. ;)

S
Steven Linden · October 6, 2026

I think I agree with her politics except on the Gaza war.

t
tyranusfan · October 6, 2026

Ed Begley Jr was, among MANY other things, in Battlestar Galactica as a Viper pilot.

C
Cranky Grandma · October 7, 2026

But he was not in 12 Angry Men. Close, though

t
tyranusfan · October 6, 2026

"Every episode is dogshit" should be one of the critics' comments quoted on the box set.

T
TalynOne · October 6, 2026

Still better than Time's Arrow. This episode basically hinges on how annoying or not you find Sarah Silverman. Time's Arrow has a similar problem with their Mark Twain.

P
Philbot · October 6, 2026

I had a thing for her in 1996. She didn’t get really annoying until much later

O
Oberhauser-Blofeld · October 6, 2026

…to be continued on the next episode of “Josh and Alex Trek Talk”.

F
Forbidden Donut · October 6, 2026

I did also find it mildly amusing that they often roast the producers for assuming the audience will miss things if they don't make it very obvious, and yet this episode goes out of its way to show off that guy's tattoo in 1967 and 1996, and they didn't register it lol

P
Philbot · October 6, 2026

Talking over it. 1967? I996 is 30 years later? Get there boys..

F
Forbidden Donut · October 6, 2026

Anyway, I won't re-watch part 2 until they do, but honestly part 1 wasn't as bad as I remember. It's just.... fine.
