One of my favorites, that's partially influenced by my dad status. It's probably reflective of my history playing DnD, but it's an early movie I could share with the kids. It will be a while before I introduce them to Excalibur.
I ADORE this movie, its one of the few modern movies that really harkens back to the fairytale/fable vibe in all its glory. Its whimsical, occasionally dark, with the staples of the questing hero, the duplicitous prince, the evil witch but somehow weaves it together into a world that feels very lived in if that makes sense.
Gotta admit .... I had never even heard of this movie prior to Adam suggesting it. Thank you, sir! Much appreciated! Given how stacked the cast was and the fact that it was based on a Neil Gaiman story, I'm kind of embarrassed it slipped under my radar for nearly 20 years. BTW - Since you mentioned it when looking up Claire Dane's acting credits ...... if you have a chance to check out "Homeland", it is exceptionally good. CIA counter-terrorist agents in realistic non-Jack Bauer-y -type intelligence operations with excellent performances and production value
Never really noticed but there's a lot of "filler" that doesn't need to be there like 2-3 cuts of people racing places at the end but I love this movie anyway. Was surprised to see this reaction was a thing but glad it was recommended/requested 😊
What do you think about, rather than save bringing back the movie wheel until you’re finally caught up on bridge crew requests, that you instead just work a movie wheel reaction into the rotation, say every 4th movie watched? That way, you’re getting to at least one movie wheel reaction each month. To me, that feels more fair to the patrons for whom the movie wheel reaction was an advertised benefit.
This is a good point. I'll do this for May, thanks Matt
I love this movie so much! I actually think it is one of the only movies that I enjoyed more than the book.
Captain Shakespeare is not in the book, making the movie immediately superior.
Glad you enjoyed it. It's a fun modern fairytale, and fun to see Michelle Pfeiffer reprising a witch role after her earlier Suki in Witches of Eastwick with Jack Nicholson, Cher, and Susan Sarandon in the 80s. You raised one query after Primus died - Blue Blood. In European folklore, nobility was said to have literal blue blood. Inbreeding made royalty look sickly with pale and thin skin in the face, and the veins look blue under those conditions. To answer Josh's question why I chose Stardust, I've always been a storyteller and an undergrad double major in Spanish Lit and Anthropology turned me on to Joseph Campbell, the Meta-story, folklore and the structrure of fairy tales. Fantasy and Sci Fi are the fairy tales we tell nowadays, but so few do adequate justice to join humanity's greatest hits enough to be retold. And so many attempts at writing a 'modern' fairy tale tend to feel preachy or fall flat. Stardust tickles my interest because it's a modern fairy tale adapted from a novel which by all accounts is vastly different in tone from the movie. I haven't read it because I know it'll ruin the film, and this just feels like storytelling comfort food. It's involved enough to have a few surprises. The Damsel in Distress rescues herself when the Hero shows he's worthy of her, which goes beyond gender politics if you've studied as much Jung and Joseph Campbell's academic works as I have (for fun, too. Total nerd here, sorry.) But it was that perfect movie, the same but just different enough to earn a spot in the rotation. After all the tech leaps, culture shocks, and Chinese Curses for living in interesting times, as I'm getting older, I don't need the film to be superlative. I'll settle for the rarity of competence. (Yeah, the film could use better editing for time, but the extra bits were the right kind of extra bits for me, and I'm good for 2 hours in a movie before I get twitchy, so this was the perfect length.) So, uh, basically I like it because I like it? I dunno, man, I also like NY style pizza but I couldn't really begin to explain why. LOL. Again, glad you enjoyed it.
I hated this movie when I was much younger, partly because my sisters would watch it over and over. But now, being older, I appreciated it much more than I thought I would. Pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed watching it again.
My wife and I saw this on our first date.
