UNCUT - Prime Factors (VOY S1E10) | Star Trek Journey 354

I love that you get Voyager!!!
Did anyone recognize the main guest star as the guy from the matrix reloaded?
I liked watching DS9, but THIS is star trek, I always thought DS9 was for kids & teens that want pew pew, brain off, space ship action. While Voyager was exploration of planets, worlds characters and what it means to be human (both judgments over exaggerated ofc.) But I will always be a Voyager first guy, never cared about the loud majority screaming from the rooftop that DS9 is the best. Happy to see that you both seem to also rly enjoy it.
most people prefer voyager. ds9 is a more nuanced show with better actors, writing, and a lot more character focus. it's pretty great!
I love Tuvok's line at the end. He is correct. His logic is rock solid but he was still in error. He failed to consider how much value Capt Janeway puts in being able to trust him. And Mulgrew makes that abundantly clear. This is a deep wound for her. At least he recognizes that once she makes it clear and appreciates that he made the wrong call. It wasn't the wrong call for Torres but it was for him.
Voyager really is superior to most of DS9
More of the Mall Planet. More of the crew wasting time. More of Janeway being the true villain of the show. More of why I hate Voyager. (At least Tuvok was willing to take the sanest action.)
I don't know if Tuvok was wrong to go behind Janeway's back and steal the trajector technology. Here's why. If Starfleet principles are more important than returning home to the Alpha Quadrant, then they should respect the laws of other cultures. However, if getting back to the Alpha Quadrant is the highest priority then obtaining technology from the Sikarians through less-than-legal means would be the right thing in my opinion to do.
I know it's the title of the next episode, but this is the S1 episode that most exists in a "state of flux" in my memory. The memory of the great stuff(the prime directive uno reverse, Tuvok being the one to defy Janeway, the final scene, Torres' growth) will be dominant one minute, then be drowned out by al the mediocre stuff the next. I don't adore it as much as you guys, and I still think Eye of the Needle is better, but this is still a B+/A-. I said in my patron take(and Ricky expanded on that thought beautifully) that I think Torres growth is more prompted by loyalty to Janeway than starfleet. The Voyager crew is the first real family she's known. Yes there was the maquis, but let's face it, they'll take anyone willing to fight for them. Granted, Janeway couldn't exactly be picky about who joins her crew either, but she certainly didn't have to make Torres chief engineer either. That showed real trust. Since they seemed to have no issues with the Voyager crew using the trajector to travel, and since it's unclear what would be required to send the whole ship(must be more complicated at least), I had this idea on a previous rewatch that if Janeway kept Gath preoccupied long enough, the Voyager crew could theoretically disassemble Voyager and transport it through piece by piece. They'd want to use more secluded trajector pads, and it would take months at a minimum to put it back together, but well worth it to shave off 40 years travel. Also, they could have approached the other magistrates themselves. At any rate, that Janeway/Tuvok scene is definitely the one that sticks in most people's minds when they think of the good stuff in this episode. With good reason.
for the record, the Mr Kim joke never gets old, I died when Alex said "the solution is obvious..." I died. BTW I knew you guys would love this show... not saying more than DS9... but.. just maybe. Everyone dragged me in the YT comments .... but I knew that if RLM, myself and many people I know think this show is far too underrated.. then TA would too. Here's to another good episode.
Harry takes MDMA and goes back to work
I'll be the naysayer. I'm having a hard time watching these episodes. I never made it through the VOY series past S2 back when it aired, and I'm remembering why I have never gone back. The plots are TNG-lite in many cases, and I'm not taken with Janeway/Mulgrew. It's hard for me to get through some of her acting. Also, Neelix and Kes are just as boring (for me) as they were the first time around. I still love Tuvok, The Doctor, and most of Paris/Kim scenes. Hoping they do more with the Klingon engineer. I'll stick with it to see if the seasons I have not seen yet improve. Like all Treks, they take a few seasons to find their footing. I'm hoping this is the same.
the show is vastly improved after season 4... I used to have a hard time watching anything before that season, but with these guys I have a new appreciation for the earlier seasons.
Josh, by the way, the analysis and critique is the secret sauce around here. There's lots of reactors who covered, sort of, Trek...and they are basically beige boxing it. Complete wimpy milktoast...don't really get positive or negative, just have a reaction that is completely unprovocative and insubstantial...designed to be inoffensive to the broadest number of viewers possible. Watching some people react to Trek is like eating soup with a fork. With you guys we always get a spoon. Sometimes its not the cleanest spoon, but hey, the soup wasn't that great either. Who's to say the dirty spoon didn't improve the flavor. At least there is substance and volition. The analysis you guys do is the best thing about the channel.
Exactly! Other Star Trek reactors are bland, play it safe, and offer very little substance as a result. TA are rare in their depth and sincerity.
"You can use logic to justify just about anything... That's its power. And it's flaw." I'm just going to leave that sitting there on the top shelf.
So glad you guys just "get" Voyager! Great story plots, great character interactions and great acting! Love all of the main characters in this crew! I can't say that about the other Star Trek series!!
It is definitely...surprising...how well Voyager is landing. It's mostly regarded as the ugly duckling of the Big Three. Maybe this phenomenon will continue into Nutrek.
I have to disagree that B’Elanna has not had enough development by this point to justify the change Seska is accusing her of. I think that change has been building in subtle but consistent ways, beginning most clearly in “Parallax.” When Janeway tells B’Elanna that Professor Chapman saw her as a promising cadet and would have supported her re-entry into Starfleet Academy, it completely challenges B’Elanna’s belief that she has only ever been seen as a problem. Coming from Janeway, that moment carries real weight. Janeway becomes more than a captain there. She becomes the mentor B’Elanna has needed, and I think even begins to fill a maternal role that B’Elanna has long been missing. From there, we continue to see signs of B’Elanna growing closer to that command structure, not because she is simply becoming more “Starfleet,” but because she is beginning to feel seen, respected, and included. In “The Cloud,” for example, she is comfortable enough to joke about her own failed animal guide ritual, which shows a kind of familiarity with Janeway and Chakotay that suggests she is no longer outside that circle looking in. “Eye of the Needle” adds even more to this. By that point she is already functioning as part of Voyager’s senior problem-solving structure, working closely with Kim and the command staff on something that could change the fate of the ship. That matters because it shows she is not just aboard Voyager, she has a purpose on Voyager. She has responsibility there, and I think that responsibility is beginning to fulfill her need for belonging. So when Seska and Carey pressure her to go against Janeway’s orders, I do not think B’Elanna’s struggle is about suddenly adopting Starfleet morality. I think it is about the respect and loyalty she has begun to form for Janeway, and the sense of purpose she has found on Voyager, coming into conflict with her old instincts. She may not be fully transformed yet, but she is clearly not on the same path she was at the beginning. Seska’s comment does not come too early. It comes at the moment when B’Elanna’s quieter internal changes have finally become visible enough that they cannot be ignored. It may even be the moment B’Elanna herself realizes she is no longer the person she once was, and that she is finally beginning to grow into someone new.
i agree with this! great points!
Having Tuvok stand up to defend Paris was a good check-in for the character, but him showing up here to do the right thing for the wrong (but still 100% logical!) reasons made me appreciate the character so much more.
Having the Prime Directive reversed on the crew is a great concept and there are some really fantastic scenes and character moments, but I just can’t bring myself to give this episode an “S” because the performance of the lead guest star is just so, so damn annoying. Did the casting director owe this guy a favour or something?!?
I think he was supposed to be annoying. Like a sleazy con artist. I think that gives the audience a good reason for not trusting this seemingly idyllic society, and why the audience accepts that this society can't be a ally going forward. The only reason the casting might not work, in my opinion, is if they are meant to think Janeway is actually falling for him. However, there is a moment after she offers him the Voyager's library of stories where she's sizing him up, which implies to me that she isn't actually smitten with him.
B'Elanna: Rhymes with Nirvana. Memory Alpha or whoever was hilariously way off with that pronunciation. 😄
Hi, Voyager hater here trying hard just to be merely a Voyager skeptic. This is my first rewatch and I'm trying to see it through different eyes as (technically) an adult. The DS9 to VOY letter inflation is real though: by my calculations J & A are inflating VOY episode grades by 2 letters on average. Oh and also this episode was good.
Bay Lana
That theme is how you score for awe inspired. Someone gives you that directive, how do you create something that could encompass such a powerful feeling? Personally, i think this song does a stellar job. I feel the vastness of space, the daunting journey ahead, the intrepid, brave and stoic theme throughout it all. Magestic.
I totally agree! I just love this main theme! My favourite Star Trek one!
A reminder for Alex. You are not meant to sit and watch the intro to old TV shows that would drive you insane, even Netflix has a skip intro button. A minute is a long time when you are standing in front of a microwave waiting for your popcorn, which is where you should be during the intro to this show screaming at the microwave to finish while you spill soda and worrying the show will start before the intro ends. I would very much like to see Josh and Alex get up during the intro and see go pro footage of them getting snacks and drinks etc. Now to the principles of captain Janeway. She is a scientist which is fine for the average Federation citizen who sits around on U.B.I eating replicator popcorn at the end of every day, but she wanted meaning and excellence so she serves in Star fleet not only do those principles matter but Janeway knows their voyage of exploration may be the most important one since Kirk's Enterprise. No ship has been out as far as Voyager. This episode triple S or not is the first Voyager episode worthy of an Emmy!
To be fair, there were also a couple minutes of commercials after the intro back in the day
Angels weep for the state of modern trek vs this.
I just realized, they actually could have had Janeway initially decide to demote Torres. The natural next choice for chief engineer would be Carey, since he was the other contender for the job back in Parallax. Then Torres would have to let Janeway know that Carey was also involved in the conspiracy. At that point, Janeway could reluctantly decide that letting Torres keep her job is the least worst option, rather than having to pick whoever is the third-best engineer on the ship.
Good callout. Could also have been just part of Janeway's lecture: "I would demote the lot of you but then I wouldn't have anybody left to be chief engineer!" Feelsbad for the nameless yellowshirts down there but it is what it is.
The bridge crew is correct in that the first “a” in B’Elanna is pronounced like the “o” in momma.
I loved the episode and great reaction and conversation, but the whole cream pie joke...pause...then realization by Alex made me laugh to much that I hit pause on the reaction screen and took me to long to get the Voyager episode paused that it screwed up my sync to badly so thanks for making my appreciation of crude humor ruin my sync. 😂
The ending of this episode is fantastic but it also points out my main problem with this show and why DS9 is so much better. No action ever has consequences, Tuvok's actions will be forgotton after this episode, nothing will come from it. Just like in future stories the show has one main problem, the massive reset button. It does have great episodes but the charaters don't really evolve, nothing really matters past the episode.
It is more episodic than DS9 but to be fair, there is some character change over time. I don't want to put in spoilers but I can think of several characters who are dramatically different between where they enter the series and where they end up, including some who were there in the pilot (so not just characters that are introduced later).
I had mentioned before that I stop watching Star Trek after, somewhere around episode 7 of Voyager, I just could not get into the characters. except I did like Captain Janeway, Tuvok and The Doctor. I am still not into the rest of the characters at this time, but some are growing on me. Now first time watching this episode, it is an "S" tier for me. and that is because of the 2nd half. This one really drew me in. The acting and the actions of the crew, Tuvok and Janeway, are really great, and how Janway handles it was excellent!! Looking forward to enjoy this series more now.
I felt that the change in B'Elanna was more out of Janeway's confidence and what she saw in her and trying to live up to that, an extension of what we see in Parallax. Being given the chance to succeed and not wanting to to let her down.
agreed! B'Elanna definitely comes across as the kind of person who's like "well if I can't succeed at this thing I don't even want to try it", and she thought she wasn't succeeding at the academy. Janeway is a lot more up-front and ready with her praise and enthusiasm, so I think it's like when a talented person has had shitty managers at their first job and they finally get a good one and are like "ok maybe I'll die for you???" lol
I don't remember this episode at all. But those finale 10 minutes were some of the best Trek I've ever seen, WOW! You simply don't have scenes like this anywhere... the amount of pure emotive acting from physical movements, facial expressions from Janeway in the confrontation scene, what the hell. This was truly spectacular. And the line of Logic being used to justify anything, it's power and it's flaw. God damn, inferno pen.
Yes! The evolution of fire pen - inferno pen!! That’s great, thank you
November and February were" sweeps" months, when Nielsen ratings were figured, so shows stacked new episodes into them. Thus, December and March tended to be a new episode drought because reruns were aired.
No-one ever lied similar to this to the captain in the past but none of them were 70,000 light-years away from home! Now Janeway is responsible for them still being that far from home twice (first time in the first episode and now in this episode).
When I think back to Voyager Season 1, this episode always come to mind. I remember thinking about it when mentioning that I think you guys will really like Janeway (before Voy started). This is an episode in my mind that really solidified Janeway (both the character and the actor).
This is why I love watching your reactions, I don't like this one for the main reason I don't like Gasrn "how ever you say his name". but you point out things about star trek that reminds me why I love star trek. You remove that guy, and I love the story and character development there's great stuff in this one
Oh so funny! I love that actor so I quite enjoy his smarminess.
This would be S tier if the entire episode was just the closing ready room scene. Bujold is a fine actress, but having watched this whole series I just can't imagine her doing *this* role justice at any step of the way. Agreed that Gath is the weak link here...that role was very miscast. It should have been a Devinoni Ral type.
I really thought the guys would see the wall of writers and decide they hated it whatever the episode was like, so glad they kept an open mind. This is a tour de force performance from Kate Mulgrew, you can see every emotion playing out in her mind. An absolute acting masterclass.
Exactly, you can see like 3 distinct emotional states in 1 second of acting
Am I the only one who finds it weirdly off-putting that Harry's defining character trait is that he avoids sexual encounters? This episode starts with everyone laughing at him for "falling" out of a boat during a romantic encounter with one of the Delaney sisters. Then a hot, hedonistic alien woman takes Harry to a planet with literal orgasm wind and he finds the first excuse he can to get out of the situation once she initiates physical contact. There's no timer, Harry. You can have sex with the hot alien and THEN tell Janeway about the warp technology. It's extra weird given how sexually liberated and self-actualized the rest of humanity, or at least Star Fleet, is portrayed across TNG, DS9, and VOY. To be clear, it wouldn't be weird if Harry didn't want sex. O'Brien has turned down multiple potential romantic partners in DS9 due to his committed monogamous relationship with Keiko and it's never weird. It's that within 10 episodes Harry has established a clear pattern of putting himself into romantic situations and then bailing on them once sex becomes an option. I know Harry is supposed to be a bit green and naïve, but he's still a Star Fleet officer. I feel like he's not being honest with himself... which is not very Star Fleet. In Picard's own words: "...The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth: whether it's scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based." I see more demonstrations of personal truth from Maquis characters, like B'Elanna and Chakotay, than Harry. And it's weird. It's like the show itself doesn't realize that Harry's sexual behavior pattern isn't a joke... it's fundamentally at odds with his role as a Star Fleet officer.
I read Harry is one of those really friendly, open people who is constantly thinking they're just being nice and making friends and other people think they're flirty. I think it fits with his overall "confident, personable, but a bit naive" character...but I do agree that they are leaning a bit hard into this one facet of that.
Easily the best EP so far. I can't believe this is only a 7.4 on IMDB wtf really? not enough phaser battles i guess.
Nothing bad happened to Harry? He gave up the opportunity for a steamy encounter with a hottie on Orgasm Planet for a technology that's no use to them. Big L for Mr Kim.
Kate Mulgrew absolutely annihilated that last scene with her acting. Picard can go kick rocks, Janeway is MY captain.
Two Voyager's in a row F Me.
💀😂
This episode is straight peak for me
What I like about this episode: Vulcan superiority - but also, Tuvok demonstrated the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. He was willing to sacrifice his career in order to get back home. Torres showing growth, but also, she has become friends with Harry which is turnabout from their first interactions in Caretaker. Seeing recurring cast getting scenes. I don't want to spoil anything about recurring cast on Voyager though so I will stop there. What I find interesting: Even though Chakotay is the First Officer in rank, Janeway apparently was still viewing Tuvok as her true First Officer. She truly hasn't formed an interpersonal connection with him. I am curious what his reaction to Torres's and Tuvok's actions would be.
not necessarily re: first officer! She seems to value Chakotay's input and respect his opinions, and she trusts him to hold the bridge when she's away and to handle a lot of the stuff with the crew. She just goes to the person she's closer to when it comes to more personal things. So the relationship is not yet at the point we've seen other Caption-1stOfficer pairs be in other shows, but going down the job description it's not like she's going over his head or failing to give him the proper responsibilities 😎
voyager found the delta quadrant risa
And yet Kim did not seek jamaharon
It has it's good Scenes, and weak Scenes, overall a good but not great Episode. BUT: The last 5 Minutes are up there for the best Scenes of all Star Trek to this Point. The last Scene is a fucking Masterpiece. Janeway is the GOAT.
Josh please get Alex a slice of pecan pie with vanilla ice cream STAT
Think if we did a fundraiser we could get him to eat it on screen?
FYI the word is *detractor* not *defector*
No, the episode was called The Defector. Did I not say it enough times in that sentence?
Another classic #horriblejanewaydecision - very confused why Josh is so pro Janeway here. Yes Mulgrew is great but look past the acting, how is foregoing the chance to get 40 years closer to home defensible here? But a great episode, the finest of Voyager's first season imo.
I love this one, great character moments throughout. My third favourite of the Season. A.
I knew, Josh, when you declared Eye of the Needle as your favorite episode of the season, that this one was going to knock it off the pedestal.
The problem with favoring the (so-called) "greater good" is that it quite possibly may not, in fact, actually be good because, much like Tuvok's use of logic in this episode, that kind of thinking can be used to justify pretty much anything, and it can be the death of individual rights (which are also the foundation of minority rights). Human history has shown just how dark that can go, when people start to dehumanize dissenters as obstacles to their "greater good", at which point they 'must be dealt with. ' It can start with marginalization or oppression, then spread to imprisonment, to torture, to murder, to war / mass murder, and/or to starvation, leaving millions dead and many alive but horribly oppressed. It can catch on from a cultural, political/ideological, or religious point of view. When that happens, history shows it's very bad news. Even if it theoretically is a "greater good", it results in the tyranny of the majority over individual rights. That can be large scale or small. In a group of three, two wolves living with a sheep can all democratically vote to eat the sheep for the 'greater good'. In a population that is dying out, a majority of men living with a minority of women that don't want to get pregnant could vote for 'the greater good' to impregnate them anyway to keep their people going. Two humans who need a kidney donation to survive can murder a healthy person to harvest his two kidneys for 'the greater good'. I passionately believe that if you're willing to trample over the rights of an individual or a minority, you don't really believe in rights, you just believe in getting what you want.
You don't want a pure shore leave episode... trust me!
Well… we want a good one
Considering the question of "Who is the Bones on Voyager", I suppose while there really isn't one in terms of a single character, Janeway gets the emotional feedback from essentially every other main character in one form or another.
Also, I do like the twist of the Federation crew being on the other side of a 'prime directive'. Cool idea.
Alex was on fire on this one. He’s the funniest person I’ve never met. I thought it was funny when he blurted out the first duff episode was The Emissary but then the idea of Janeway giving that ugly old pervert the middle finger as she dematerialised has just ended me. 💀
Meanwhile, damn, while I still don't love this episode overall (good, not great IMO), I do really love the 'S Tier Moment' contained in it. That last scene is fantastic. The first half or so is kinda boring. Some of the 'trio of traitors' scenes are pretty strong stuff, and then that ending is *chef's kiss*. Maybe a B+ episode featuring some A scenes and a 'triple S' scene?
Being able to live with yourself is a good way of explaining the importance of having principles that you actually stick with.
Hey guys, thanks for taking my question. When I mentioned the ramifications of altering the natural development, I was talking about making the trade for the technology. We know from the dialogue that "stories" are very important to this culture, and by giving them a giant database of stories from all over the federation the ideas or themes from those stories could be used in unpredictable ways. Looking forward to more great reactions (and your interview with Gates tomorrow!)
As a human, there's something very satisfying about watching a Vulcan's reaction to logic failing them.
obviously the Tuvok-Janeway of it all is goated, but I also really really love the B'Elanna development in this. You can see how that "You have disappointed me" cut her to the quick, when she wouldn't have given a flying fuck in the beginning. Captain Mom strikes again....
Just curious if this happens to anyone else. I only got a notification about this upload 15 minutes ago, despite it apparently being posted yesterday. Anyone else have a super delayed notification?
Yesterday was for early access
Although not a bald face lie, in Relics when Geordie tells the Captain how long it will take to get something done, Scotty then asks how long it will actually take him, implying he never told Captain Kirk the real time frame for accomplishing something but gave him a padded answer. That's how he got his reputation as a miracle worker.
Starship captains are like children…
One, the creep knew the technology wouldn't work else where but their planet. Two, Tim Russ controlling / processing the emotions with his eyes blinking more often. Excellent episode, once again I think this would have hit far harder if this was put later in the season. This one did a great job of ramping, and ramping up until a great pay off character wise.
Ugh I teared up at the end. The pain was palpable at the end. Two people speaking, not screaming, not cursing, but you can feel that there’s so much there. Really great last scene. “Dismissed.”
Love how much you loved this! Such a strong early episode. Also, I agree that disappointing Janeway would be as bad or even wore than disappointing Picard. As a teacher, I channel my inner Janeway when disciplining the kids in my class. Always seems to work!
Total mom energy. Tuvok is son and Be'lanna as daughter.
Damn how could I forget about this one. I hope they decide to do a full tier list for this season too.
We will!
Are there honestly patrons who just seem to hate it all?
Not at all! As much as I dislike what Voyager would become, I do like Voyager season 1 to 3. MANY S and A episodes including this one.
TNG has always been my favourite with Voyager a close second, but this watch through has me questioning that. TNG will always have that nostalgia factor for me of watching it as a kid, but Voyager has a seriously epic first season. I have to say, I think Janeway is my favourite captain...
I have a similar relationship with TNG, saw it as a kid so very nolstagic, but I adore Voyager and DS9.
The story is good, but, boy, the acting of Katrin Mulgrew elevates it even more. well done!
She stays hitting homers!
And remember Bel’Anna did spend two years at the academy so she has enough basic training in starfleet to follow.
People pay you guys just to hate on you? That’s crazy! I don’t always agree with you guys but you are like my buds I’ll say to my mom I’m watching Star Trek with the boys! You guys are far enough in now that you can play a game Trek fans play. Where you build your perfect crew from the existing pool! My crew would be Picard, Kira, Tom at the Helm, Harry at ops. Data as science officer (He’s not science per Se but he could do anything!) Chief engineer Scotty! Doctor EMH, security Odo, and Neelix as moral officer. 😂
Can I have Captain Janeway, First Officer Kira, Security Officer Tasha, Counsellor Troi, Doctor Crusher, Science Officer Dax and Chief Engineer Torres?
Every time I think about watching this episode, I remember the 2nd half. When I actually get to the episode, there is a thumbnail of that smarmy guy with long hair that Janeway interacted with... and I have second thoughts. Great episode, glad you all enjoyed it!
Voyager is the most pure “Star Trek” in the TOS sense, since TOS itself.
The “Prime Directive” shoe is on the other foot with this one. Love it.
Josh forgetting to breathe during the scene in Janeway's ready room at the end.
The last 12 minutes of this episode elevates this to an S.
Josh: “You could at least give my beloved queen someone handsome!” 😭😭
Name change to Jose? I thought your name would be Kevin.
I think the guest actor gets too much hate, a case of "he's doing a good job of making me hate him and finding him annoying". I think the "I don't like this...not pleasurable" line is less cringe and more identifying of exactly what this guy is. I respect it.
He gives off big massage oils and key party vibes.
"Hatrons" are 100% the people who sub even though they think your opinions are ass, and/or who think YOU are asses.......................so most of us😁
Lying to your Captain has been rare but rarely serious either
Wait, you guys are watching DS9 too!?
We've finally arrived at the correct pronounciation of B'Elanna
She is no longer being mistaken for a type of whale
I gotta say I watched this one 20 years ago and maybe a couple of times since then but always skipped bunch of it including the end, for some reason (except that first time, so that stayed with me). But I watched it again last week, and I still find the alien guy irritating. But the rest I really liked. I guess when I watched it first time I was in a specific frame of mind or mood. I never thought it was bad, just left a bad taste from whatever reason or emotion I had then. I still find their working behind the captain a little annoying (albeit understandable), but not nearly as much as I remembered it. And now seeing your reaction I am glad you liked it as well.
It’s ironic you guys love Brannon Braga and feel that voyager is very TOS like but a lot of trek fans felt like he wasn’t a TOS fan. Brannon Braga did passed on a chance to work on Relics due to not watching TOS.
lol that is ironic. Could be the case he has a similar view of Star Trek as us even without being a TOS fan
Kate Mulgrew is so damn good in that last scene. You can just see Janeway struggling to hold it together as she realizes she’s got a crew that’s willing to mutiny and a close friend/confidant who will ignore her orders/judgment and take matters into his own hands. I do almost wish there could have been a scene with Chakotay where Janeway contemplates whether Torres and Tuvok’s actions represent any sort of failure on her part as a leader (I think this kind of thing would probably make any captain question themselves), but I think Mulgrew gives us enough with her stunning performance.
Nah Chakotay is pretty much always forgotten go ask Robert Beltran
Sadly Gilligan did not get the crew off the island this episode.
Got to admit, I liked this one a bit better on this rewatch than last time. It's still far from my favorite, largely because a) I find the actor playing the French alien guy very weak, and b) I don't like Tuvok's turn here; despite his explanation at the end, it just doesn't fit with his character as established so far, in my opinion. Nonetheless, it has some very good stuff in it.
Some fun facts about this episode: - Eric Stillwell, one of the writers of the story for this, also co-wrote the story for "Yesterday's Enterprise", another one that defies your "wall of writers" rule. - The original pitch from Stillwell and David George had the aliens they encountered being the species Gary Seven was from, from "Assignment: Earth". Michael Piller vetoed the connection to TOS. - Tim Russ had some objections to the way Tuvok was written here, and a significant amount of the script was apparently changed to make him happy with it. He still wasn't completely happy, though. Apparently, Russ wanted Tuvok's motivation to be that he thought there would be a mutiny if Janeway refused the trade, as opposed to what ended up in the episode, that he was sparing Janeway her principles.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired. I loved the Prime Directive role-reversal but also remember feeling really bad for Janeway at the time. Trusting the Maquis seemed hard enough, but when you're not sure you can trust the Starfleet people either.... ouch! All Captains are somewhat isolated, but she is extremely isolated both professionally and personally more than anyone else we see in Star Trek.
The isolation is the part that probably stings the most here. We see here being friends with Tuvok and then he betrays her. When he gets dismissed, she's probably feels even lonelier than ever because Tuvok is the one she would bring into the ready room to discuss stuff like this.
When I first saw the alien guy, with his deep V-neck and his barbed-wire hairpiece, I was sure he was either going to call Janeway a "Herbert" or arrest Wesley Crusher for running on the lawn. Thankfully, this episode is far better than either of those. A genuine ethical dilemma (which is getting harder to do in new and different ways in this franchise), Janeway in full-on disappointed-mom mode (terrifying), and Tim Russ having surgical control of the level of emotion he allows to slip through Tuvok's armor. Who cares about the dumb aliens or their issues; once they disappear, this episode flies into the stratosphere.
There must be a difference between your dvds and Paramount+. The time kept unsyncing, and it was not a buffering problem.
It's the commercial fades I noticed. My copies fade longer and theirs seems to be a lot faster. I notice I have to adjust the sync after every 'cut to commerical break' transition.
Where do I sign up for the Dawn Zephyr?
Before we get to the sex scoreboard I have to say……. FUCK SAKE…. That last scene was one of the best in ALL of star trek. WOWZERS Voyager Okay now to the light hearted….I mean serious business of potential creampies. In the beginning the board thought we would have to revise and give Harry a +1 for a Delaney sister (apparently Jenny). But after reviewing the scene we are torn. Is Harry not admitting to a cheating situation or did he really premature shoot himself off the gondola. Hard (or maybe not) to say. We have decided Harry is being honest and a total wuss-bag and did not bang Jenny. Now we gave paris a +1 with a Delaney sister (no idea the name I am guessing Penny) and that seems confirmed. Now to the episode. We really thought orgies may occur given some of the talk but we can’t see anything that we can assume. Again, starting with Harry. JEEZ limp dick have a go. Good gravy that should have been the easiest egg to “CRACK” ever but we think instead of doing the wabonka he choose to rush and tell about the whatever tech-know-babble. DUDE it probably would only have been 2 or 3 minutes for you to finish (limb noodle). Just DO IT then go technoblahblah. So Harry does not get a new one. Janeway and Manbun almost looked like a score. Obviously, could have been but Janeway has most respect than to let Manbun have a slice of cream pie. She keeps him at pecan pie. So F sake. The Episode you would think Paris would be scoring hat-tricks he ……….. is not on the planet….. I guess. Okay SEX SCORE BOARD Paris – 2 Neelix - 1 Kes – 1 Overview. This turns out to be the biggest BLUE BALL ep in all of star trek. Aliens throwing themselves to be “cracked” but ….. no?... no!!!.
You have to think that there was crazy sex being had on the planet by the rest of the crew. An entire planet looking for pleasures? You know Paris knows how to shore leave. Harry could have EASILY scored twice here, but dude was completely off his game. On a planet with Ectasy in the wind, he still didn't close the deal.
Its been too long since I watched this one, Chakotay would be the other side we just haven’t seen yet but Kes is optional
If B'Elanna had gone total Starfleet at this point she would not have participated in the plot behind Janeway's back. Taking responsibility for her actions did show growth - not necessarily change. And - although she would deny that - a sign of Klingon honor.
I would argue Tuvok is total Starfleet and also participated
You can see B'Elanna's growth at the end, if Janeway had told her she was disappointed in her a few episodes ago I don't think she would have cared as much.
Sometimes you remember all the wrong stuff. All I remembered from this episode was the slimy guy and the boring market place scene at the beginning. I really don't know why. The ending is a knock out.
Worth adding that it’s fair to say that Janeway being as well written and developed as a character as she is, is primarily the responsibility of Jeri Taylor.
Jeri Taylor wrote two Janeway novels: “Mosaic” & “Pathways” that really explore that character. Definitely recommended.
It's a novel experience for me to watch these episodes for the first time along with you. I find it ... fascinating. As to the episode itself, nice twist with Tuvok being the one to make the illegal exchange. And Torres discovers Klingon honor. I wanted to cry after Janeway dismissed Tuvok. I enjoyed it. Starting to see I wrote this show off way too early.
The scene between Janeway and Tuvok is just perfect. Where the camera work is the icing on the cake, Kate Mulgrew be the cherry.
I predict that this will NOT be the episode that will qualify as the first Voyager you both dislike. That one is ...... not one I'm going to mention because I follow the TA Prime Directive, dammit! 🫡
I suspect I know which one you're thinking of, and they're probably going to love it
Probably the best in a short Season 1. Great stuff.
One of the things this series has nailed in its first 10 episodes is giving us fantastic Janeway scenes. The scene with Tuvok at the end is stellar.
All right, something to do tonight Right sorry about the Paramount thing. But it means you’re getting noticed even more
Right. I stumbled over a young YouTuber yesterday who listed the five best Trek YT channels in his opinion. TA was number 3.
