It would take far, far more than even a Star Trek Holiday Special to RUIN the franchise. 😀
Surprised it hasn’t been mentioned, but there are a whole series of non-Cannon books written by William Shatner along with somebody else who continues Kirk’s adventures into the next generation era. Where he’s resurrected by the Romulans using borg tech somehow. He has to break free. He teamed up with Picard and Riker. He has adventures with old man bones, and Spock. I think Scotty shows up it’s been a long time since I read them, but non-Cannon so there you go.
Generations is in my favourite 50 movies, the only film i love more is Star Trek 6. It had everything i want in a Star Trek film. I love it.
Full admission: I'm a big "ship" guy. I think the effort, care, and consistency the creators put into the gorgeous Ships of Trek are one of the (many) reasons Trek stands out as a franchise so much. The Enterprise-D is my favorite Trek ship (Refit 1701 a close second). It's a ship I grew up with as a kid. Braga & Moore did the D dirty in "Generations." An old Bird of Prey, even going through the shields, would have been destroyed by the D in under 10 seconds on the show. Instead of that nonsense technobabble about using "ionic coils" or whatever to force it to cloak, they could of just cycled the shield frequency (remember the BORG anyone!?!?) and unloaded a volley of phasers and torpedoes at the old ship and blew it up before it got more than 3-4 shots off. Soooo lame and unbelievable. The crash was quite epic and super cool though, so I'll give it that. Just loathe how easily the D went down to a vastly inferior opponent. If the Duras sisters had 2-3 modern Bird of Preys going through the shields, I could buy it. But one super old one? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr "Generations" suffers from a lot of these type of problems, where the writers were obviously rushed and didn't really think through the details well. The uniform problems (going back-and-forth between scenes), Picard's choice of when to come out of the Nexus and how easy it was for him to bust out of "paradise," the ridiculousness of Soren's little rockets being able to take out entire stars and the D not being able to shoot them down in time (please...). Also not a fan of "introducing" Picard on the big screen with off-screen traumatic news. The movie frustrates me in so many ways, but I will concede it has a lot of to offer too. The themes are excellent, the cinematography and effects are top-notch, acting is very good, and it has some truly excellent character beats (Picard/Data in stellar cartography being a standout). Very mixed feeling on this film. C+ for me.
In Relics, Scotty say I bet Jim Kirk himself brought the old girl out of moth balls, BUUUT he saw him die on the B. Trek fans hate continuity issues
It’s a fine movie/story …. But it felt more like a long episode on tv
Quite the title lol
If you're picking apart the scientific and technical "errors" of this film, you're missing the entire point.
Separate the ship. Deploy two shield frequencies. Fire at will. Ugh
I don't see how that solves the problem at all. Then you have the Saucer Section and the Klingons attacking the rest of the enterprise. Why would you want to fire at Will in the first place? What did Riker even do to deserve that?
As for the Enterprise not adjusting its shield frequencies. How do we know they didn't? Remember that the Klingons could see everything Geordi sees, so they'd see the adjusted frequencies just the same.
It would be weird for the chief engineer to be calmly looking at their shield frequencies during a ship emergency. Geordi would be running around engineering putting out fires.
yes
I think the originally shot death of Captain Kirk by Soran is better, but still not great. I like Josh's thought that Kirk's real death occurred when he saved the Enterprise B. The reason I like the original ending better (having seen it in rough cut) is it shows that in order to beat or kill Kirk, his adversary would have had to cheat or fight dirty. You were never going to beat Kirk in a fair fist-fight; the only way to have beat him was for Soran to shoot him when he wasn't looking. And there is more to the scene than just Kirk being shot. Better (to me) than dying after falling down a cliff with a metal bridge.
In the opening 15 minutes of this movie, it is established they are traveling from Earth to Pluto and back to Earth. The movie claims they are the only ship within a 2 week radius of a distress call. Really? There is a recent interview with Ron Moore about writing this movie. He said, everytime he wrote a script, he'd get a list longer than the script of Producer notes he was required to fit in. Each time, he'd rewrite the movie from scratch to make their notes seem rational... and they'd respond with a bigger list. After 6 months, he just gave up and put everything they asked into the script, verbatim, and they signed off and he moved on with his life. I think it shows.
It makes sense if the B is out near Pluto. Depending on its orbit Pluto is 20-30 hours from Earth at impulse. ST1 and BoBW establish that going to warp in a solar system is beyond reckless. Pluto has a strange orbit that puts it above the plain of most of the rest of the solar system. The idea the Enterprise (at the edge of the solar system) is the only ship that can be there like in 15 minutes to save these ships from blowing up isn’t that crazy. Did the writers think this through when they wrote this scene? Probably not. They probably just got lucky.
Generations is a solid good trek film for being TNG first one! Of course you can pick apart every little detail if you want, but you’re being too critical if you are. In my opinion, watch any trek made after 2013 and that is what ruined Star trek Not this!
I’m in full agreement with Kirk’s death being an afterthought and how he needed a better one. There should have been a set up where there was something only Kirk could do. Knowledge only he had. That would have been satisfying. Better even if it tied in to something we saw him do to save the ship the first time, something only he and the viewers knew. As it was it felt like they tossed him in to have a “watch the movie. Kirk dies” marketing moment (we all knew he died before the film).
Speaking of marketing, you guys are brilliant at it. You have a product worth paying for, and you offer upgrades that enhance the experience, and present them well.
Generations is so much better then the last 2 movies, I love it and it's awesome. People can say what they want this is top3 star trek movies for me after "voyage home" and " first contact" . The last 2 movies killed the franchise they are so bad
As flawed as the last two TNG films are, I never found them to be "that bad." Just very flawed. Still plenty to like about both of those films imho.
Kirk’s death on Enterprise B is in an effort to save the ship, noble. Kirk’s death on the planet saved the Sun and several planets including the Enterprise D crew, noble. Kirk could have just gone back to before the Enterprise B launch party and make them reschedule the day to Wednesday, after the torpedos, tractor beam, and medical staff arrive. The ship wouldn’t be in the area and the people would all go into the Nexus, no harm no foul. Would make for a worse plot, but makes more sense.
Generations is my least favorite by far of the 4 TNG motion pictures!
Does Picard KNOW who Kirk is? I mean Kirk's reputation. The only suggestion he does is the line "He's James T. Kirk." That line always struck me as aimed at the audience, not that Picard realises who exactly he has teamed up with. If Picard doesn't know Kirk's entire career then are all Starfleet captains and crews regularly saving the Earth and large sectors of the galaxy?
I think it’s pretty clear he knows who he is.
It takes LIGHT over eight minutes to get from Sol to Earth, but somehow a simple rocket took mere seconds to get from Veridian III to the star. If our Sun suddenly ceased to function it would take eight minutes for us to even notice.
Micro warp drive equivalent is the only explanation.
I think Picard's view on having a family changed after Inner Light. I think there were some slight hints I picked up throughout subsequent episodes that after Inner Light, he saw what he had been missing (family life) and subconsciously missed it. Of course, he is no comparison to Sisko, who is a family man, without question.
Life is school in which we learn that time is the fire in which we burn. - A line from a great poem.
