Voyager Theme Reaction
Clipped from our upcoming reaction to the Voyager premiere episode

I guess the difference in our theme song tastes is I don't want a Captain's log, or a drop. Yes TNG's theme is definitely best at getting you pumped to watch the show. But over the years, I find that the iconic drop is actually my least favorite part of it. That said, the beginning of the TNG theme before the drop that plays over the planets, Captain's log aside, is probably my favorite Star Trek theme. It just sounds like optimistic space. Next favorite for me would be the DS9 theme. But I see your point. I love listening to this theme on headphones, and it even brings a tear to my eye every time I do that. But whenever I'm watching an actual episode, I always skip the theme because as part of an episode, it's just a long chunk of nothing that gets in the way. Plus while I get the visuals of the station, since the show is about the station, they're not very interesting to look at past the first few times. Voyager is right at DS9's level. Much better visuals, and I don't skip the theme when watching episodes. It also can bring a tear to my eye when listening to it on headphones. I just like the DS9 song more, probably because I like the DS9 show more, and the respective shows are what I think of when I hear these songs. I've noticed too that my taste in music in general has shifted over the years from more in your face stuff to stuff that is more atmospheric. For instance, as a kid, the drop in TNG's theme was by far my favorite part, and the other songs were boring. But now that I'm older, and maybe because I'm also on the spectrum, I actually find the TNG drop jarring now, and that's when I skip.
Voyager's theme is solid on its own, but man, paired with those beauty shots of the ship flying past solar flares and asteroids, reflecting off planetary rings... absolutely top tier. This isn't my favorite Star Trek series, but it's the only one who's credits I NEVER skip.
As far as intros & themes go, Voyager's is a more "cinematic" score. More of an "adventure on the open sea" type feel. Similar to TMP's Ilia's Theme in a way. All in all, with the TV show intros these guys have seen so far, I would personally rank them in this order: TOS>TNG>VOY>DS9
It’s not just the words, there is sort of a “charge forward to adventure!” sound to both TOS andTNG’s opening music. Both DS9 and voyager sound like those YouTube channel songs you play to get to sleep
Personally I like the intro to “Enterprise” the best.
Yes I miss the reading of ‘space….’ But maybe after Gene was gone with DS9 and Voyager they didn’t want to use it, I would still have liked it
I've learned a lot about Enterprise's theme from reading this comment section!
Been looking forward to this one, curious if you would hate it or love it... and as it turns out you're somewhat in the middle. Hoping it will grow on you as the show progresses. I think what makes this opening sequence so highly rated among Star Trek fans in general is that it's a combination of excellent music (not a lively anthem, but a well crafted melody) along with excellent visuals. The views of the ship going through different scenic vistas in space were top notch and cutting edge for the mid 1990s. And it holds up well... Even 30 years later it still looks spectacular. Super excited to see the full reaction to the premiere!!
Guess they didn't like Past Tense?
As far as themes go... lol just wait...
Stargate SG-1 still is my favorite theme song... You guys should maybe give it a review (just the theme song) and see how you feel
It’s not that I love any of the themes. It’s that I hate one. And the rest are a relief of neutrality in comparison.
Alex and Josh, imo the musical scores reflects the nature of each series. TOS was the speeding Enterprise in Western lore. TNG has the EXACT TOS Goldsmith Motion Picture score to keep beloved fans “engaged” in a new series. DS9: Stripped score on Isolation from Starfleet. And VOYAGER, the wonders and dangers of the Delta Quadrant.
I've always been rather "meh" on the theme. It's a good piece of music, but it makes the ship feel like it's plodding along. There's a reason why TNG went with TMP's march rather than Ilia's Theme (even though I prefer Ilia's Theme over the march as a piece of music).
Thanks for treating us with this. I very much approve of how you've decided to do this. I make no exaggeration when I say that I cannot WAIT for this same type of reaction when Enterprise rolls around~
There's still a long road ahead through the 90s before we hit Enterprise.
The themes have never really been a big thing for me. I usually skip the intro credits tbh. But I will say TNG has by far the best theme imo. And DS9 is easily the most boring. Voyager is somewhere in the middle. A friend of mine who was probably the biggest Star Trek fan I've ever known, used to crap all over the DS9 theme at least once a week in random DMs, so I definitely enjoy you guys' poking fun at it as it reminds me of him. He passed away a couple years ago now, but I know he would have loved your riffing on it.
I like this intro a lot. While I get what you mean with it not having the same energy as TNG/TOS, to me it does a good job of representing the mystery and vastness of space, the journey ahead, they are lost but determined. I also just really like that middle bit at 2:32, the harmonies and build up.
best intro is the NEXT show "enterprise" a show crimminally cancelled just when it got good
Voyager’s theme is my favorite. TNG is iconic but I really love the melodic Voyager theme. I don’t dislike any of the themes though (even Enterprise, which is umm…different).
Voyager's theme IS better than DS9's. Can't deny that.
Voyager is widely considered as having the best theme by far. Love all of them. Yes, even Enterprise's.
*Widely I'm sorry but what??
The Voyager opening theme is my favorite of all the series.
same and it's not close either.
I love the DS9 intro & theme. There’s that moment, after the comet goes by, where you just get a second of empty space with nothing there, just for a moment… the vastness of the abyss, before DS9 comes into view. It really paints the picture that the Station is out in the middle of nowhere, echoed by the loneliness of the French Horns.
DS9 is my favourite Trek show without question, but I like the Voyager theme a bit more than the DS9 one.
I think Voyager has the most beautiful theme personally.
I like most Trek themes but when I don’t watch with reactors I tend to skip them because I can
I think it's the most beautiful intro of them all. Always love the pan through the ice crystals.
As my second favorite composer after John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith is a legend! Most of his works, from “The Omen” to “Poltergeist” to “Total Recall”, are pure genius. This is not one of those works. Voyager’s theme is a hauntingly beautiful theme…and it’s certainly better than the DS9 theme (not saying much), but it hardly compares to the rousing fanfare of his TMP/TNG theme! I remember looking forward to hearing the G-man’s composition for this new Star Trek series and feeling so let down. Which actually coincides with how I felt about this series in general. Okay, now I will heed my mother’s advice and try to say only nice things about Suckager moving forward.
These were TV shows. The purpose of those themes was to let you know how long you had to head to the toilet then grab snacks and a drink before the show started while singing along with BAM, BAM BAM! to the drums and orchestra.
If you like Robert Picardo, you guys should check out The Howling, especially after watching a few episodes of Voyager as a comparison. Then again, being horror fans, you may have already seen that movie.
I just love RP as ' The Cowboy' in Robert Zemeckis's Inner Space ! Particularly when he's playing off Martin Shorts transition ;p Or even In Gremlins 2 ... now I'm showing my age....
I like this theme better than DS9. Wait until Star Trek: Enterprise before giving up on the themes.
There’s no narration like in ToS and TNG but DS9 and Voyager’s themes are great musical scores.
TV in the late 90s and 2000s was going through a big shift and Star Trek is the perfect franchise to highlight those changes. Even still today Star Trek is a good reflection of the state of modern media, love it or hate it.
The ship going through the high-resolution, beautiful space scenery is gorgeous!
I love the Voyager theme and intro. It's beautiful, majestic and with a touch of sadness which ties in with the theme of the ship's overarching mission.
ALEX - ...is it going to be "We're going on an adventure!"? Nope. It's more like "Help! We're lost. We wanna go home"
Don't worry Alex, we all get excited when Robert Picardo comes on
When you guys get to "First Contact".....the main title theme is one of the most beautiful pieces of music in cinema history period. It is SO haunting, but in a good way.
Totally agree
In high school, my music teacher taught us the themes of tv shows, I convinced him to add the Voyager theme. I played the french horn, this was probably the most fun I've had in high school. Muted trumpets start the song, then the percussions coming in, trumpets respond, then I come in on the horn, the flutes and violins providing the background (normally I provide the background for them). I still often get goosebump listening to that theme.
I think the Voyager opening titles and theme grow on you. I always skip the DS9 one, but not Voyager.
Voyager's theme is the GOAT of Star Trek themes, imo. But who knows, maybe they'll like Enterprise's theme better 😆
It'll be a long road getting from here to there. I'm guessing a couple years anyway.
Can't wait for enterprise theme😅 I haven't watched in yrs but still know the song by heart 😌
That's my karaoke go too
i actully kind of like Voyager's theme the best
Out of the themes for the 5 live action TV shows... I have a 3000 song USB stick in my car ... the theme song for ENTERPRISE is the only one on the stick. Also, on the stick are the opening themes for the movies: 2, 3, and 7. Also, a famous orchestra did Picard's flute solo. Oh, and a few ST3 score moments... "sarek", "sunset on genesis", "fighting chance" and "can I cook". When fans were clamoring for a "Captain Sulu" series, I always thought that the theme for ST3 would be a good Sulu Series theme, just like ST1 was the theme for TNG. Out of all series ideas, a Sulu series was a lost opportunity. I have no clue why they avoided those Trek years for a TV series.
This theme music is not the ear worm like the TOS/TNG themes are. But this show’s theme is not to “boldly go where no one has gone before” but rather a homesick crew’s long and dangerous “voyage home”. I think Goldsmith’s music fits that theme quite well.
Putting in an early request for a post-Enterprise tier ranking of Trek themes. 😁
Jerry Goldsmith, like John Williams, was a master when it comes to great scores: Planet of the Apes, Chinatown, First Blood, Supergirl, Basic Instinct, Air Force One, and of course five of the Star Trek movies. Here, he made one of his best.
My first memory of Robert Picardo is from a series called Steambath. It was a very strange show. I became aware of every role he did after that.
Not a triumphant stately march like TNG (which I love), and not a Space Age pop fanfare like TOS (which I really love). The Voyager theme feels more like a romantic nautical score and something that evokes a ship on the ocean. I like it. (way more than DS9 theme)
I have always found the Voyager theme quite calming. I really love the french horns near the beginning; they come in strong when the title appears.
Robert Picardo was also "The Cowboy" in Innerspace, and Clamp's Chief of Security in Gremlins 2.
After Voyager, I saw him everywhere (even in movies like innerspace, that I already watched x times before). Never before noticed him.
Anime Openings are still the king. Most Western shows just like have a jingle or something. Though the Simpsons and Family Guy openings are still good.
Haven’t watched a lot of anime but the ones I have the intro is for sure FIRE
It's a little embarrassing to admit because I've been a musician all my life, but the time signature of the Voyager theme has always thrown me for a loop. Like I had to look it up eventually because after listening to it a hundred times, I could not figure out how to count it. And I'm a percussionist! Rhythm is my THING! haha. Anyway, after I finally looked up the time signature, I started conducting the count every time the theme plays. So it's extra satisfying because it's tricky but I finally got it down. haha
Oddly, I always have had that problem with DS9's theme, but never Voyager.
I'm actually excited for these Voyager reactions because I have no emotional attachment to the show or its episodes. Time to give all the fan favorite episodes an E!
What I love is orchestral theme songs for Star Trek. A lot of shows (sci fi and otherwise) do pop songs for their themes and for a show set in the far future, those just don't hit for me. They feel too modern I guess, too rooted in the now, when I want the show to be a bit more timeless.
I love the original theme, the DS9 theme and I’m probably one of the few people who didn’t like that they repurposed The Motion Picture theme for TNG. I always mute it when it starts during an episode! That being said, I think that Voyager’s theme is by far the most majestic piece of music for a Star Trek series of the four that the guys have heard - and certainly the most beautiful opening credits sequence so far.
Frankly, I don't think they even really heard much of the theme song. They talked over most of it, then Alex got distracted. No biggie, you'll get hundreds more opportunities for it to grow on you. TOS/TNG themes will always be iconic and irreplaceable, but I think Voyager's theme is the most beautiful of them all, both in sound and visuals. The guys don't seem to have any wonder or awe regarding the beauty and mystery of space, so I can understand why it's just a "shrug" for them.
You guys should have listened to just the music before watching the show. You got too distracted by the actor/character names and you talked through the whole thing. 😒
If I were to list my five favourite things about Voyager, the theme song would one on there.
This trickle of Voyager hype has sparked the fire in me. Time to start once more.
The intro themes are whatever to me on pretty much anything I watch so I get it.
When you look at voyager flying above the rings on that planet and you see voyagers reflection in the rings, you'll suddenly notice that planet is impossibly, ridiculously tiny lol.
Wouldn't be the weirdest anomalous space thingie a starfleet ship has run across
But what about the absolute peak '90s CGI? Parting the nebula? Going through the rings of the planet?? This is like Monet paintings compared with "here's DS9 from a fifth angle. Here it is from a SIXTH angle." The actual theme sounds like it was written specifically for people who watched the show 30 years ago and are coming back to it now. It's got that burnished-nostalgia feel to it. I thought it was pretty mediocre when this aired but it's taking me back now. I do love that this sequence spoils absolutely everything it can spoil about the upcoming pilot episode. That's how you know it's '90s Star Trek.
I understand that DS9's opening titles have little visual variety, but it is a subject that I can't respond to properly (for reasons obvious to anyone who has seen the full DS9 run).
I’m sure you know who does the theme
I you gotta go with the TOS theme but I think I like this over TNG
The DS9 theme is not my favorite by any stretch. I can see why it was written the way it was since it is just shots of the station but it doesn’t offer a lot of harmonic interest, focusing on long droning notes and doesn't have much of a build. Voyager theme has timpani in the beginning to add a bit more energy. I always liked the woodwind motif that comes in with the main melody. I always got goosebumps in the B section when the cellos start doing triplet arpeggios underneath the ascending melody which doesn't really conform to any particular scale. It's somewhat eerie. For me, this theme sets evokes a Starfleet ship boldly going in a strange and uncharted part of the galaxy.
I'd forgotten how good the Voyager theme is! Hopefully it'll grow on them.
There is an extended version on the soundtrack that clocks in at over 3 minutes. The theme won an Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Main Title Theme Music." Jay Chattaway scores "Caretaker" itself which also was nominated for an Emmy.
It was also nominated for best opening visuals, but lost to ER that year
I think its a better theme than DS9s. DS9s is symphonic but quite plodding and slow.
You're not wrong. Nothing beats TOS and TNG so don't sweat it.
I like the VOY better than DS9 and TNG. The best theme in Star Trek is the First Contact main theme, one of the most gorgeous themes in history.
I actually think the theme for Generations one of the best.
The themes for ds9 and Voy are great but they don’t necessarilyhave good intros
Maybe it will grow on them, or maybe they just don't vibe with it the way some of us do. I love it and I feel like it fits well not only with this show but it just has an optimistic, majestic 'Federation / Trek / space vibe' in the best way.
Not my favorite Trek series, but's got a great theme song and intro!
Agree. Same.
As a Goldsmith fan since 1979, I out-rank anyone who discusses this theme....unless they were fans before 1979....in which case I'm going to demand proof if you disagree with my opinion. The first review I read of this Voyager theme (before the series debuted here in Ireland/the UK) was that it sounded as if Goldsmith had been told by the producers NOT to compose anything too exciting. That was Rick Berman's m.o. regarding music in ST. I like the theme and it did win Goldsmith his 5th Emmy, but it doesn't sound like his top rank work.
Looking foward to seeing if they recognize Robert Duncan McNeill from his other acting roles.
🤣🤣I know which one you’re talking about.
The theme is very similar to DS9 IMHO. That's fine, I love both. But Voyager definitely has the more interesting visuals. DS9 can be boring, just circling around the station. In Voyager you see some solar flares, some nebulae, some planets, and that's the shit we're here for.
The moving nacelles on Intrepid-class ships is still completely ridiculous, like fan-fic ridiculous.
Vaguely remember hearing at the time it was supposed to be something to combat the issues brought up in everyone’s favourite show “Force of Nature”…
Voyager's theme and intro are tied for my favorite with another show. Based on how you guys felt about DS9's intro I didn't expect you to particularly love it though. I still get a bit emotional whenever I hear the theme song. This probably sounds crazy but TNG and TOS have my least favorite intros, too over the top for me.
Man, I LOVE this theme. The triumphant, regal and intrepid (appropriate) sound they encompassed in this score just gives me such good feelings when I hear it. Couple with the beautiful intro of them passing by all the planets on their way out of our solar system, it’s just *chefs kiss*. But then I also adore DS9s intro. When you compare it to the whooshing by of the TNG visuals, there’s no comparison which is the better ship intro.
Nothing will ever compare with the TNG/Motion Picture theme.
We all can’t wait for the Enterprise theme reaction
It's Robert Picardo, as from Joe Dante films.
I love the theme, it's Majestic AF. Most of Jerry Goldsmith's trek music after TMP is more thoughtful than bombastic.
It's beautiful, especially with the visuals, but it's not a high-octane edge of your seat theme like TNG is. I do wonder how it'd sound with Kate Mulgrew having some form of narration over it, Picard's dulcet tones absolutely elevate TNG's opening. Or likewise it'd be incredible if DS9 had that with Avery Brook's voice.
"To boldly sit! Where no-one! Sat! Before!!" Kidding, kidding.
It's pretty pretty good
It is a great theme/intro
Alright let’s strap in for the theme song! Alex got turned on by what now? 👀
