the Deep throat thing my god our educational system sucks
I hope you guys stick with this show. Would a million times rather watch this than Voyager.
This episode is nightmare fuel.
"It's a pube" - this is what I"m here for. Don't ever change guys.
Such a great show. and the smirk at the end, lets you know what he is thinking that he can escape when he is ready.
Love how creepy this was the first time I saw it
So excited that you guys are watching X-Files now. When I was growing up, it was must see TV in my household, being one of the few shows that my family would watch together (also Star Trek: TNG, lol). Some episodes I have either forgotten completely or just have a few vague images of, but I still remember this episode to this day, because it creeped me out so much. It took me a quite a while to sleep soundly after this, let me tell you!
There are far better and far creepier episodes later on, but this is a strong showing so early in the series. Aside from his abilities, just the performance of Toombs absolutely freaked me out as a kid, not to mention launching himself out of the vent. I do feel the handcuffs were a bit of a copout. I mean this guy can squeeze his whole body down a chimney, but he can't squeeze his hands out of a set of cuffs? Also the weird thing about going back and watching these old shows is seeing actors you know from much later in their careers. I saw this episode as a kid, but Donal Logue was just a random, forgettable name in the credits then. It was King Horik on Vikings and Harvey Bullock on Gotham that made me familiar with his work, so it's weird to go back a couple decades before that and see him all baby faced here.
Rambling discussion? Oh, I savor your every discussion about X-Files like it's the nectar of life. So nice to hear fresh takes on my favorite show especially when it's two seasoned veterans of TV and movie appreciation that I respect. I was here for TOS originally, and ST2:WoK, but have stuck around and enjoyed re-watching TNG and now DS9. I will always be here for X-Files content, I may even join the Discord finally.
It ended on t he scene!
This one always made the fan voted marathons on FX in the 90s. This one is one of the ones I very clearly remember watching as a little kid. It’s so creepy and good.
Google "Deep Throat Watergate" you'll get your answer. I swear it's nothing dirty ! lol Love this! keep going! X-Files is awesome. especially the first few seasons. obviously with 20+ episodes seasons not every episode is going to be great, but for the most part i think you'll enjoy these
I bought season 1 to watch along, hopefully I end up doing the same for season 2. This and Ds9 airing at the same time was such a great era of television, I never missed a week!
I remember watching this show before bed and this for some reason was the only episode that really made it hard for me to sleep that night
Welcome to the first 'Monster of the week' episode, can't wait to get home to watch.
Yes! More! MORE!!!
Interesting tidbit. (nothing to do with this particular episode) Final Destination (made by the X-Files people) was written as an X-Files episode! I believe the script is available online. Someone had the idea to make it into a feature-length film and cut out the Mulder and Scully bits. Thus a franchise was born...from The X-Files! In the original script, the premonitions were explained as a genetic anomaly some people have that can momentarily see immediate future.
Not sure if someone already pointed this out, but the "leaker" to the reporters for Watergate (Richard Nixon) was called Deep Throat - long before the movie you reference (and yes, there is a movie that made that term famous). So they're letting you know that the character who is leaking information to Mulder in episode two and asking him not to take part in that particular investigation is a government operative who is leaking information to him like Deepthroat did in Watergate. He is Mulder’s inside operative so long as it serves him to do so.
I give whoever credit for filming the opening actually in Baltimore. I figured the establishing shot was just file footage but then the scenes of the first victim going to the office was someplace I recognized. I’m loving the X-Files reactions as much as the Trek ones and even a bit more since I don’t remember what happened in detail or haven’t seen the episode at all.
Yey! Another X-files reaction!
I do not really care for the Gov conspiracy / cover up of aliens stuff like the first two episodes. THIS is why I fell in love with X-files (and the many one off eps like it). I am glad they put this one third because I remember almost stopping watching after the first two.
It's so fascinating to me how people can be so opposite. I don't care for the monster of the week episodes for the most part at all myself. But I LOVE the government conspiracy stuff! Maybe that's one of the big reasons why this show has endured and is so beloved. There's something for everybody.
The term Deep Throat comes from the undercover source that worked with Woodward and Bernstein to uncover the Watergate Scandal. The source was given this name because of the film Deep Throat. It is assumed and I may be wrong about this, that the Deep Throat in the X-Files might be the same source. Once again, another great reaction. At this point, I would subscribe just for the X-Files, even if you weren't doing Trek.
That last part is great to hear, thank you
Doug Hutchison as Toombs is one of the creepiest performances ever. His dead blank stares are pure subtle gold. Such a different performance from his utterly vile character in The Green Mile. Never understood why this guy didn't become a bigger actor. He is really good.
Great reaction guys! This episode has always stayed with me. When I think of The X-Files this is one of the first episodes that pop into my head. That being said, there are still a lot of really great one's to come. I struggle to think of many other series that are consistently as good as The X-Files.
This episode has some elements of the Tooms character that reminds me of The Night Strangler. Given this show was an homage to the Kolchak: Night Stalker series, I was not surprised.
A subtle affect they had here. It showed everything in black and white except for Tumes intended victim. It miight have been a little too subtle. Alex noticed the picture went black and white but didn't notice Scully was still in color.
The term "deep throat" is for an anonymous source. Also, I think they yellow eyes and skin (jaundice) has to do with the fact that he has to eat livers like his liver doesn't function correctly so he has to eat 5 livers every 30 years to stay alive.
As you probably know, the term because more popular after the Watergate 1972 scandal as it was used by two Washington Post journalists.
Interesting behind the scenes note. The Director was considered to have done a poor job, and a few scenes were redone by Glen and James. First and last episode directed by Harry.
The show almost peaked too early with this one.
