UNCUT - Eye of the Beholder (TNG S7E18) | Star Trek Journey 312

It finally hit me!!!! I don't know if someone mentioned below. The blond guy in this episode, the psychic catalyst, is from Shashanke Redemption, one of 'The Sisters'.: "I like it when they fight back." The actor is good at balancing slimy creepiness with regalness to the point of being uncanny. It was driving me crazy until now lol
Reminder: You just watched Deanna's wet dream
Soon after the season was over I was at a Star Trek Convention where Marina attended. She said that she said something to one of the writers about giving her something more to do and their response was to put her and Worf together to fuck with them. Of something like that, it was a long time ago and I'm old.
I like this episode, I feel in this one, since we already know Worf has feeling for Troi, from a past episode, this one like a good magician it has us focus on them and we not notice any other clues that might be in this episode. Well done. Troi, also said it was a mix of her thoughts and Pierce, so in Troi mind we already sensed Worf's feeling for her, so that was on her mind already. Is my theory at least. Also imagine if the bones in the wall were real and all this time there have been hidden there, that would have been so crazy.
I like your shirt Josh, Rise above hate! Solid mystery episode, great vibe (fits well for an October watch).
It was an excellent gothic/horror sci-fi for Halloween. Agreed! That shirt? I might buy that shirt.
When I first watched the show as a teen, I was a total Troi/Riker shipper and hated the Troi/Worf stuff, but I find now that I rewatch it, I'm enjoying it a lot more. I wish they'd had a couple more seasons to delve into it.
It's never been a favorite episode of mine, but this was one of my favorite reactions!
Loved you guys rewinding the tape trying to figure out what you had just seen.
Reminds me of an old British TV drama, "The Stone Tape"
Also a suicide in Second Sight (dude didn't need to fly into the star, he did it to relive his wife of the burden of being married to him). Also the warp speed is destroying the fabric of space episode on TNG, the women killed herself to damage space to prove that it was possible to damage space.
Good observations, I still feel in those cases those forms of suicide are generally caused by an external circumstance and not the person‘s actual personality and despair which often are harder to determine in real life than the things they show us in TV shows
On the subject of Klingon strength being possibly overstated... I once read a similar theory that alien booze such as blood wine and Romulan ale actually aren't very strong, but Humanity is running a long con so that we can drink them under the table if the necessity arises...
I don’t think they’re that strong really. We’ve seen Vulcans do some amazing feats of strength. Klingons are just bruisers.
Mark Rolston has the unfortunate blessing of playing creepy really well. He is infamous for his role in Shawshank Redemption.
I’m with you guys. I love this episode. The ending doesn’t completely ruin it for me but I guess I haven’t rewatched it a lot. I’m team Worf and Deanna!
I've never been a fan of this episode it was more Brannon Braga Weird wank. And it was Pretty Dull.
It was all Bobby in the shower
as we were in the period between season six and seven, it was announced that season seven was the final season so we knew the end was coming
What’s with Troi’s Joker lips makeup?
I’m probably wrong about this, but I believe this is the first suicide in Star Trek
That would probably be Joe Tormolen in The Naked Time.
Who is hating on you, Josh?
45:20 Yes. It was all in her head!! They did not pork. I LOVE the mindfuck of this episode!!
5:28: "Or it'll be some weird ghost story. Who knows?" You called it! I think of this episode as a mess because it is NOT a dream before the 20 minute mark. After I watched it for the first time on TV, I could not remember which part of the Troi/Worf romance actually happened. The convoluted technobabble explanation in the final two minutes also didn't help. 46:10: You have to remember, back in those days(TM) before DVD, you couldn't go back to a previous scene if you didn't understand something. If you have to wait years for a rerun in order to finally "get" it, that episode will not be fondly remembered.
A convoluted techno babble explanation in the final few minutes? Must be a Braga episode!
I forgot about the "It's not like Dan to take his own life" line. LOL!
Star Trek making Lost before Lost.
?
Pierce spooked me out because he looked like Wladimir Putin in the f..ing 90s!
He always looked creepy! (Before Putin)
I thought Worf /Riker was too late in the game.
I thought we weren't allowed to spoil the Worf/Riker romance
Definitely my type of episode, S
Good point that the alternate realities are a workaround for introducing this new idea into a mostly episodic series. Especially in its final season. And if everyone wasn’t on board with the pairing. Frustrating, but it makes sense. Personally, I think there’s enough foundation between the two characters to make it a natural development.
Worfanna?
Deorf
I like this episode even more on a full rewatch. Half of the episode being a dream is frustrating, but I think it works here as it explains the suicide and leaves us knowing that Troi is into Worf, which I really don’t get the hate - she’s a babe and he’s a chad, of course they’d be up for banging. It’s a good mystery and the directing is great, I keep noticing new background details each time. I’d give this an A.
I don't believe it's frustrating, it's a fantastic twist!!
I’m not crazy about this episode. It’s ok I guess. Seeing the inside of the nacelle was very cool though. C+
I'd love to know what the hell was going on with Deanna's lips in this episode. Also "It's not like Dan to take his own life" is up there with some of the worst lines in Trek lol.
Fresh off that 💉
Michael Dorn will play a character named Dr. Michael Moghson in an upcoming movie. Apparently, he's not completely done with Worf.
Is this a joke?
MIchael Dorn got the chance to make out with 2 women this episode. Nice.
And they each got to make out with his teeth. 🧛♂️
Definite "Eyes of Laura Mars" vibes in this one. I give it an A.
Warp speed limit mention! And yeah, now youre catching the drift, only mentioned when we need to break the rules.
Which I’m guessing is any time they need to move the ship
"Was he straight up committing suicide? Well, that's what he did, but was that his intention? I really like that." Lol, taken out of context, that's funny!!
Had the same thought as they said it haha
Brannon Braga is the quintessential whacky sci fi idea guy more than a structured story guy. The differences in Ronald D Moore and his style is arguably what made them work so well together. I’ll have a lot more thoughts on him later in the franchise.
So did you guys know that Klingons supposedly have 2 dicks? 🍆🍆 Because of the Brak lul the Klingon redundant organs.. Although they say in ethics that they only have 1 heart. Though multi chambered.. 🫀Also they only got one nose and 2 eyes 1 mouth? 🤷♂️ so why would the D be doubled?
Once you guys are through all the spoilers you need to watch Marinas con panel performances.. she’s hilarious! 😂 She has always called Micheal Dorny! Because her husband was also a Micheal..
I slightly disagree that the science fiction plot takes away from the suicide of Kwan at the beginning. As we saw with Troi's hallucination, the reasons for her attempted suicide weren't just completely made up; they had roots in her real feelings and insecurities. Presumably the same was true for Kwan. The psychic thing didn't just take him over and force him to kill himself; it worked by ramping up his real feelings to an insane degree.
I love this episode. A great mystery, some great dialogue scenes, and great direction. I love the realization that what she saw was a reflection and I love the scene with Worf and Riker in Ten Forward.
Did that happen or was it in Troi’s vision?
So this one did improve on rewatch for me. There's some solid mystery elements, and the nacelle set is pretty cool. Also the Riker and Worf scene in 10 Forward is hilarious. I'll give it a B. Big step up from the D I was leaning toward. I did laugh at Troi's comment at the end. She was hitting Worf with the "how could you cheat on me in my dream" energy. If he knew what she was talking about he'd be like "first off, that was a hallucination, and second, WE'RE NOT IN A RELATIONSHIP..............unless you want to be?". Decent episode. Better than I remember.
Roshenkoi.
Troishenko.
Honestly better than I remembered. It's too soapy and mired in technobabble (psychobabble?), and who really cares about these events beyond the satisfaction of solving a cold case. But even though I knew where the ride was going, getting there was fun.
i really like this one. its season 7 in a good way
Star trek TNG The sex scoreboard **call changed see below this post** I imagine all of you (who care anyway) are wondering what will be the call here. The answer is: YES!!! It counts. Just like a few other “in the mind” humpin-pumpin scores this one is a known for sure Worfing for Troi in episode. We see the start and then the morning after. Riker 14 Troi 7 new Picard 4 Dr. Bev 4 Data 2 Geordi 2 Broccoli 2 i Worf 2 new Chief/Keiko 1 Ro 1 Extra: Note, Troi is half the score as Riker. So Riker is the King slut, Troi the Queen. At least as of now. Reminder we did not count the baby making in Parallels because it didn’t happen during the ep. Here it did during the ep. If you disagree (Jovet of course) then make your case. A good argument may result in a change but this case I think is a tough one to change. It would mean going back and changing the other “not real” shaggin’. Let the debate begin: **CHANGE IN SCORE FROM ORIGINAL POST** @Nolan (see the reply below) made some great points that has led to changes above. Actually the Worfing was not done by Worf but by fantasy Worf. Now we will count for Troi because it is Troi but real Worf was not the one giving a Troi-oscopy. So from above Worf loses the score. Also. another great @Nolan point. Riker was pulling that LT. Going back it is clear that she was screaming NUMBER ONE!!! a few times that night so Riker gets a score added. I know if there is someone new it may seem like a stretch, but is in line with what we have been doing and many others including many TOS scores were at this level of ASSUMPTION. changes to above: Troi still 7 Riker now 15 Worf now 1
The question is, will any character in Star Trek be able to catch up with Riker? Did you keep a tally for Kirk?
Upon a rewatch - think I remember why I didn’t like the end when I first saw it - it’ was too ambiguous about Worf and Troi 😅
It’s basically the “ It was all a dream!” Which was kinda a cop out.
I like this one, esp where it blurs the line about where the hallucination really started. For those playing along at home, around the 22:30 mark should be where she enters the hallucination, the part where she sees the psychic visions: it's the last scene that doesn't have Troi in it
It’s just an ok episode. Do agree with the writers they don’t do mysteries well. And speaking of the writers they liked the idea of a beauty and the beast romance but I also agree with them that they really don’t spark. Fells like a brother sister relationship not a romantic one. Marina was not a fan of this at all. laughably bad understanding on suicide something you might see on an afternoon special, not what you should see on a show geared for adults. And as a viewer the reality of how TNG was written ( and just from the writers words between seasons 6 and 7) you know many things were highly unlikely to happen. On the plus side directing and atmosphere is good and the score is above average.
So much to like here, the mystery element is good it feels slightly off kilter in a good way but I can’t help but feel the ending undermines it a little - it’s a bit muddled (maybe that’s the point?) Also like the score
Another youtuber, Steve Shives, has a series where he does skits about underappreciated starfleet jobs. In one, he plays a janitor complaining about how he has no idea how hes supposed to clean the psychic imprint of a murder-suicide out of a wall.
I love Steven!
Boy, this episode had you guys chasing your tails. That's okay, I had a what the hell just happened moment when I first saw it too. Totally enjoyed the episode though. Nerd part of me loved seeing what the inside of a warp nacelles looks like.
I love this one
I really don't understand what everyone has against season 7. There are some question mark episodes and weird stuff, but nothing's truly BAD. I love season 7. It has some of my favourite episodes. I have more favourites in Season 7 than I do Season 6. Season 5 is ultimately my favourite season though. It has The Next Phase and Cause and Effect.
Season 7 is solid. I would say it has the most "fun" episodes that are enjoyable to watch, and yeah they get a little batshit which is okay! There are no E's this season and the only possible D for me is Interface.
Bleh episode, but I’m increasingly hanging in on Season 7 just so I can follow Josh’s shirt game.
I really enjoyed this episode. It was a great mystery with some really good character dynamics, delusion or not. I will say, for Trek to touch upon subjects as serious as suicide, seemed extremely ballsy. Granted, I do not know how openly people used that word or confronted that topic back in the 90's, but I know that today, it's just not talked about or even discussed especially on social media to the point where you could get banned! I know I'm the "baby" of this community lol, but when I binged this, it shocked me for being so taboo and I love the risks it took. I will actually give this an S. I think it's almost perfect.
