A brief update on the Ultima Online video...
This is an update specifically in regards to the upcoming Ultima Online video for those who are interested.
First of all, I really appreciate everybody who hopped on the server, even those who only fired the game once or twice. I recognize that it's a bit obtuse for modern tastes, but it was incredibly gratifying to see people really getting into it. I've heard so many great stories and seen some legendary screenshots. You guys have made this a very memorable month.
At this point, activity on the server has wound down quite a bit. Understandably so. Lots of people REALLY hit the grind when it first came online. Now the weather is getting nicer, plenty of other games are coming out (games that aren't 30 years old, mind you), and the novelty has worn off for some folks.
It's just as well, as I'm now fully immersed in writing this script. This gives me even less time for playing and community management. This is undoubtedly one of the most complicated videos I've ever made. I've read entire novels worth of post-mortems, essays, diary entries from the developers, patch notes, and Usenet posts from 30 years ago. I've watched somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 hours of interviews with UO developers, and compiled 20,000 words worth of bullet point notes across 3 documents. I have a folder with magazine interviews and previews which alone is more than 3GB (God bless the internet archive) - not to mention my footage folder which has just crested the 200GB mark. That's 1080p... imagine if I did 4K. I conducted an interview with an ex software engineer at Origin, corresponded with dozens of UO vets sharing information and stories, and quite literally THOUSANDS of people who joined our private server. Each step of way I can't help but think "What have I gotten myself into?"
Not that I've ever thought about stopping. In the very beginning, this Ultima series seemed like an impossible task. I remember finishing up the Akalabeth/U1 video and thinking to myself "It took that long to do the simplest game in the series... can I really get through this whole thing?" And here we are. What's one more impossible task?
Intimidating scope aside, the writing is coming easy this time around. I usually get jammed up while writing scripts for these larger videos, but this one seems to write itself. The form it's taking is more segmented and chapter-based than my usual videos, which I chalk up to the game's complete lack of a narrative thread. On top of discussing the game itself, the key to this script seems to increasingly be my own personal anecdotes, as well as the memories shared by others. Storytelling and experiences are at the heart of UO, and they seem to be doing a better job of emphasizing the game's mechanics than a straightforward explanation ever could. I guess we'll see how it all shakes out.
I know, I know. "He'll do anything other than play Ultima IX". Look at my channel man. Do you think I'm scared of bad games??
The truth is that tons of late-stage Origin history is buried within UO's development. More than I was expecting, this game and the context surrounding its creation are really critical in understanding Ultima IX and what follows. I think I've said this for the past 3 or 4 Ultima videos (and it continues to be true), but this'll be the most history-dense video I've made. So bookend enjoyers rejoice, we've got plenty of development horror stories ahead of us.
Knock on wood the writing continues smoothly, I should be editing soon. Once the video releases, there'll be a link in a pinned comment to the server as well as a video tutorial showing how to install the game. I'll probably have a "getting started guide" included in the video too, just to help acclimatize people to the sandbox. At this point, I have NO idea what kind of traffic to expect, but I would imagine the video will be a pretty effective advertisement. I saw a post in the wild recommending my server, saying "This is probably the only chance you'll ever have to play Ultima Online with a bunch of fellow newbies". If that's true, I consider it to be a very special by-product of this thing we're doing. I hope that continues after the video.
Thank you all for your patience and support as I've been putting this together. Some day after the video releases I'll do a little post-mortem of my own, explain what a crazy experience this has been. Until then, I'm back to writing. Hope your summer is off to a great start, and I will touch base soon!

Hey Maj, excited for the UO video. I’m hoping it’s all going well, but I have a query. Have you played Nier replicant, if so, what are your thoughts on it, and would you consider making a video on it?
Keep pushing, big boss
I hope you are ok. I wish you all the best!!! Regards from Germany. So my original account got folded into this one that I had and forgot about.
Have to drop the subscription for awhile due to financial issues, but it's always been great to hear from you about the process! Excited to see this on YouTube when it comes around.
I jump for joy everytime you upload. Can't wait for the next one
This attitude is why I've signed up to your Patreon!
Godspeed, cap'n.
Your work really is unparalleled, it's actual *documentaries* about games, complete with all the work that goes into it to track down sources and stuff. I can think of barely anyone else who puts this much work into producing something so high quality.
Our precious Maj thuggin
Looking forward to this one! I must admit, I was planning on making a thief to hunt you down and try to steal from you every chance I had, but I was unable to get high enough stealing to join the thief's guild so I kind of fell off. Sorry I couldn't give you that slice of the "good ol' days!" Hopefully someone either stole from you or PK'd you so you had a full experience.
exciting to hear about all this! you're one of the best youtubers out there because you put in the work man, keep it up!
I can’t tell you how much this series has come to mean to me. Thank you for your service.
There's absolutely a unique kind of fun to be had here! I really want to thank you and Big Spleen for making it possible! I absolutely plan to have some adventures in the near future!
I almost joined the server to relive my memories. Then I remembered my memories of UO were joining, getting ganked 4 times in a hour, giving up, and then letting my dad pay the membership fee for a year that I didn't play. Copy-pasta worthy story it ain't.
Despite having made the Ultima IX joke before, I’m in no hurry to see that video. UO is such an important game, I’m really looking forward to this one
Appreciate you being so thorough, it's what makes your videos stand out so much from the pack! Looking forward to it whenever it's out. :)
Since I first found your series, Ultima Online is the installment I've been most excited for - not out of any familiarity with UO, but just because of its place in multiplayer history. A friend of mine hopped into your server and had a blast with it! Take all the time you need; thanks for making such amazing videos.
Omg it’s me I’m bookend enjoyers! Sounds like you have plenty of material, but I can get you in touch with someone who worked on the game for several years in the early 00’s if you need another interviewee!
Your passion for Ultima is absolutely undeniable and it shines brilliantly through your work. I'm so glad we're able to contribute to it. Maybe someday I'll even play an Ultima game! (What would you suggest as someone who has never played one, but tons of Fallout 1/2/the awesome Russian Fallout 2 original fangames?) Thanks again for all you do man.
Much appreciated! If you enjoy Fallout 1, I think you'd have a pretty easy time getting into Ultima VII. Incidentally, it's my favorite one. What U7 lacks in the sort of reactivity you find in Fallout, it makes up for in the depth of its world building and the variety of interactions in its gameplay. It's just an incredibly charming, wonderful game to sit down and play with a cup of coffee. PS - I love the OG Fallouts, just replayed 2 last year. But I've never checked out these fan games. I'll have to look into this.
Bounced off the game pretty hard, but insane respect for powering through the legacy. Weirdly enough, trying it got me into FFXI, found my tolerance for legacy jank I guess!
Glad the writing's going well! I think a chapter-based format sounds great. And as a history/bookend enjoyer I am READY
I joined for a little bit and man it was rough but some people were really kind and helped me out, even if I did end up getting distracted with Diablo 4. Keep up the good work, Maj!! We believe in you 🙏
Seeing you put your heart and soul into this inspires people like me to keep working on our own passions projects.
Really looking forward to this. Also, not related to Ultima, I really liked the TekWar and Two Worlds videos. Any chance of doing other videos are more obscure games/multi-media projects like those again?
Absolutely! Those are my favorite sorts of videos to do (outside of Ultima, of course).
Thanks for the update M-dawg. Godspeed.
