Saturn Leftovers (Bonus Video)
You thought I was Saturned out after the Saturn RPG video? I hadn't even BEGUN to scratch surface of the Saturn's innate weirdness! However, with this Patreon™ Exclusive™ Bonus™ Video™? I believe I have, at the very least, scratched that surface.
Thanks for being there for the channel. I hope you enjoy this collection of goodness and madness.

Man. Buldak Ramen are the BEST. I like the curry flavor in the gold pack.
Three dirty dwarves was headed by Ed Annunziata. He also helmed Ecco the Dolphin, Colibri on the 32X and……….Mr. Bones!!
A true auteur, nothing but respect for the creativity.
Bonus video, well guess I'll have dessert
MR BONESSSSS i am so obsessed with mr bones
I'm a Brit, and I had a Saturn in the Nineties and played the PAL version of Deep Fear originally when it was new, so seeing a later generation redisvover it is fascinating. I think an important thing about the game is its position in Sega history - you mention that it never had a US release party but Deep Fear itself was the last ever official PAL release for Saturn so the game really has powerful "end of an era" resonance, giving it significance beyond the game itself for players of the time. As for the game contents, a little bit you missed: it's worth pointing out that low oxygen also increases monster strength - admittedly it's very minor effect and easy to miss given how trivial the combat is anyway, but whereas normally monsters fall down after a few shots, when oxygen is red they'll tank the shots and keep walking towards you, before getting thrown in a big dramatic backflip when they're finally dead. As for your conclusions: now, I was a massive Sega Boy (still am!) and back in the Nineties school playground i defended my team belligerently, but even back then i had to admit that Deep Fear was inferior to Resident Evil. The complete lack of tension - low enemy count, easy combat, plentiful supplies, trivial puzzles - just negated both the survival and the horror. However, the game still had many great features. I can vouch that the terrible voice acting, far worse than any Jill Sandwich, has so-bad-it's-good vibes - Dubois the mincing queen was the height of comedy to me and my friends watching over my shoulder when we were 11. The environmental design is amazing and full of atmosphere (I appreciate that it cribs from a different strain of movies, like The Thing and The Abyss), the transformations are downright stomach-churning in their warping body horror, and to this date I still consider the collapse of the Big Table at the end of the game to be genuinely one of the best cutscenes in videogames. The monster designs are great, even if the 32-bit graphics just don't do them justice (the female mutant's got a nice ass though, you can get a good angle on it in one scene near the ladder in the Junk Area, lol!). The flooding and oxygen are nice twists but I agree with you that they're undercooked and gimmicky. On that front, Deep Fear is a game that i feel would genuinely benefit from a modern remake - just imagine how modern tech could render progressive real-time flooding, for instance, with the base gradually falling apart around you as a countdown to disaster. Concept artist Nishimura also did some incredible artwork for this game that the poor Saturn's scrappy polygons just don't do justice, so seeing them realised in their full grotesquerie would be spectacular.
Mr Bones is the "Neverhood" of the Saturn
This is awesome content, man. Well worth the sub.
Aaand now I've added three more games to my Deep Backlog list for when I start my retro streams up. I had very little in terms of Saturn games on that list and this video plus the main one have shown me it's definitely a platform I shouldn't ignore. Fantastic work as always dude. You've quickly become one of my favourite gaming essay channels. Also, fun fact: Appaloosa Interactive was originally called Novotrade and were the studio that made Ecco the Dolphin. They definitely had some variety.
I played Deep Fear for the first time around January and I also used the 3D controller. I too was infuriated by the screen fading to black. I had NO IDEA that the analog stick was the culprit. I'm speechless. Btw, Deep Fear's OST is incredible. Lastly, I just want to say that the Twin Stick is not really worth it, it's clumsy, stiff and there are only four games compatible (well, five if you count Bulk Slash). What a great pair of videos you made btw, I only got into the Saturn since I moved to Japan a couple of years ago and seeing you cover the games I've been slowly chipping away in this period of time has been a blast. Most of them are practically unknown. I wanted to subscribe to your Patreon for the longest time and this was the last nudge I needed!
I’m dying at OCEAN. FLOOR. PRISON
The bit about the missile "mistake" had me spit tea with sudden laughter. 🤣
Hey folks, sorry about the delay on the main video. If you're reading this, please note that the Patreon version (which is exactly the same minus ad breaks [and weirdly seems to have less compression than YouTube - go figure]) is now available for ALL PATRONS if you check the previous update on this feed!
aww well now my night is made
The the main video still scheduled for tonight?
Yessir, just waiting on my thumbnail guy to pull through before I make the video live. If I'm not ready to go in a couple of hours, I will at the very least edit the Patreon early access version so that everyone here can watch it.
Maj have you ever engaged with Retro Pals on twitch? They, like you, are masters of exhuming decrepit obscurities, and they have a particular affinity for the Saturn. Also thanks for the great content!!
My pleasure! I'm not familiar with their work, but I will take a look at their twitch channel. Thanks!
[fallout new vagas on sale] I can't possibly provide an equivalent value for you. You are man, you are.
Aw shucks =)
Is there a list of the games featured anywhere? Every time I watch one of these I wind up going shopping and it would save me having to take notes lol
"Shopping" I'm so sorry for what this video will do to your bank account :') - Bulk Slash - Deep Fear - Mr. Bones - PowerSlave - Three Dirty Dwarves
MR BONES VINDICATION
Great video. It's gotten me really hyped for the main one, which I was already looking forward to since you announced it. Thanks for doing what you do, these are definitely worth the price of admission
Any plans to put these onto, say, a private YouTube playlist or something? I like to listen to them while I work and clean, but that precludes having my phone unlocked, and it's very difficult to watch Patreon videos unless your phone is unlocked and your browser has active focus, and beyond that, as these pile up, it might get to be a bit difficult to sift through them with Patreon's clunky search functions. No worries if not, just asking!
That's a good suggestion - I'll see about compiling them all into a more listenable format soon.
Honestly this is good enough to go on the main channel
it's too good for the main channel, and only for the elect
Gosh, thanks :3
I realize this might be a bit confusing for folks outside of the early access tiers - the MAIN Saturn video will be out tomorrow (the 26th) for everybody. I just finished editing this today and figured I'd upload it ASAP. There's not really anything by way of references to the main video, so feel free to watch this one beforehand... or save it for dessert, your call. Cheers!
holy moly a 52 minute BONUS video???? you're spoiling us!
YOU DESERVE IT!
