The Verse Programming Language
Learn the Verse programming language!
Verse is a new programming language, developed by Epic Games. Verse is the programming language used in UEFN, and will be the language used to program gameplay in Unreal Engine 6, once it comes out.
This is a comprehensive course on the Verse programming language, and Scene Graph. Scene Graph is an Entity-Component System (ECS), which will be the official replacement of the Actor framework in Unreal Engine 6.
Free Asset Pack Provided
In this course, we will learn how to use Verse and Scene Graph to make gameplay experiences in UEFN (the Unreal Editor for Fortnite). We will:
Create entities and give them data and functionality with Scene Graph components
Create entity hierarchies and reuse them with customizable Prefabs
Design props, levels, and game mechanics with Prefabs
Create Verse-authored components with custom Verse functionality
Learn the Verse programming language in depth, including:
How to think like a Verse programmer
How to reason about Verse code, look up code definitions, and analyze the Verse, Unreal Engine, and Fortnite Verse code base
How to print log messages and draw debug shapes
Creating constants, variables, arrays, maps, tuples, optionals, and more
Creating functions, modules, function libraries, Verse tags, and more
Adding verse tags to entities, searching the scene graph and local entity hierarchies for entities and components
Create extension methods for various types in Verse
Create structs to package data
Create classes to leverage inheritance and polymorphism
Create interfaces to keep code modular
Send Scene Events up and down the Scene Graph in an anonymous way, including sending payload data
Creating custom events to signal and await to and from
Verse's concurrency features, including spawn, sync, branch, rush, and race
Create Verse components to handle game functionality, including:
Overlaps, sweeps and queries
Damage
Keyframed movement of entities
Play Skeletal Mesh animations from Verse
Spawn entities dynamically
Projectile movement
Play particle and sound effects from Verse
Set Material and Niagara System parameters dynamically from Verse
Add and remove entities to and from other entities at runtime
Create complex puzzle mechanics with a modular architecture
We will create a dungeon crawler puzzle-platformer in this course, complete with moving platforms, fire, spike traps, sawblade traps, pressure plates, Souls-style elevators, fireball projectiles, and more
We will add Fortnite-specific functionality in the last section, including zombie creatures, swimmable water, teleporters, equippable weapons, and flyable chickens.
You will learn how to use Lore to revision-control your project, reverting back to a working state if you ever find it broken and un-fixable
Verse code works in multiplayer. You do NOT need any programming experience!
This course uses UEFN. You must have enough space on your machine to download and install UEFN and Fortnite. In order to use the free asset pack provided, you must also have enough space to download Unreal Engine 5.8 to migrate those assets to your UEFN project.
This course is for complete beginners. You do not need any programming experience to take this course. I don't assume you have any game development experience.
You will love the Verse programming language, and find that programming gameplay in Verse is a wonderful experience once you understand the fundamentals!
See you in the course!

Hey Stephen, this course looks interesting. How many more parts are there going to be and when will the entire course finish being uploaded?
A lot, and soon. I've hit a snag in real life, dealing with a problem so I was planning on finishing it sooner. But it won't be long.
This course looks really interesting! Will it be available on Udemy? I'd rather have all my courses in one place.
I understand that! A version of this will be on Udemy, but not the whole course that will be here on Patreon. The reason is because Udemy has steadily paid instructors less and less to the point where I can no longer keep doing this from Udemy earnings alone.
will this course be available on Udemy ?
We plan on finishing it next month and putting the complete course up on Udemy.
First time I bought something on Patreon. Does it take some further action or time for these courses to unlock?
New videos are rolling out as they are completed. We are estimating mid next month for completion.
Stephen I Know GAS from your project and ı started Aura again for to being prof in gas c++ also I Know develop something from your other courses they are amazing I asked chatgpt abot this language for can I Use Gas project with verse and it said U Would be control your GAS project more easly is it true
It would likely be a version of GAS built in Scene Graph.
How nice!!!! I am looking forward to this course. I am also following your C++ course at the moment. I'm wondering though, if it is worth it, learning C++....
I think anyone serious about programming will want to know C++ too. Verse will be for gameplay, C++ for lower level programming. Just like UE5 devs know both, more capable UE6 devs will know both.
The most exciting thing is of course the "flyable Chickens"
I have to agree
I confused: Scene Graph and Verse uses Entities and Components, but not systems? So it's not ECS? It's more akin to Actors and ActorComponents?
It's an entity component system (ECS). Completely different from the monolithic Actor hierarchy.
Thank you, Stephen! As always, this will be amazing, I am sure!
Super awesome, thank you Stephen :)
Thank you Shannon!
I am in!. I prefer to wait the complete version of the course. You never let us down! Thanks man.
Thank you!!!
When will u launch this course ?
Very soon! The first few lectures will be out within the next couple of days. I will make an announcement and have a sale.
will that be a separate course or part of c++ course?
This is a separate course.
it seems amazing !
I don't like subscriptions; please also make it available for a fixed price.
Don't worry, I will.
Exciting! What will the cadence of lecture release look like? Will it be only for silver or gold tier subscribers? :)
It will be released quickly, at a higher cadence similar to the FPS course. This one will be Gold Tier. I'm going to give an ETA of 2 months to completion (and hopefully over-deliver).
