Back to Basics

I upgraded Game Objects and Scripts, Building a Graph, and Mathematical Surfaces, releasing them as if they were a single new tutorial. Three for the price of one! This is a complete rewrite of the Basics series, moving forward to Unity 2019 LTS, adding subjects like the package manager, URP, and shader graph. Most of the same old ground is still covered, but with a fresh approach.

Now that this upgrade is out the way I can publish some cool new Basics tutorials.

I am a huge fan of these tutorials! They've made me a better programmer, I'm especially enjoying the object management series. One thing I would love to see is a tutorial series or two that covers the basis of programming and the basis of the maths required for the rest of the tutorials (similar to the clock tutorial, but at a length more akin to object management). Basic series and beyond assumes a certain proficiency with maths and programming. A great way to bring in a larger audience / make the rest of your tutorials more accessible without compromising quality might be a tutorial series similarly designed as your others, but introducing concepts like variables (for new programmers) and mathematical concepts (this would be hugely beneficial for me as I believe there are a lot of developers like myself with not much of a mathematical background to speak of). I can think of a few times in the past where I've wanted to share this resource to people who are new to unity and programming in general but can't because of this accessibility gap. I think this is a huge shame as this is truly one of the best resources for unity I've ever come across for reasons beyond just learning X thing in unity (ie how to think logically and integrate large structures together). I see it as more just creating a 'pre-requisites' gateway to the rest of your tutorials so to speak. If that's not of interest to you then that's fine, will still be reading :)! Keep up the great work and I look forward to more!

Glad to hear you enjoy them! The plan is to publish separate articles covering the fundamentals of math and such.

Great work, Jasper! I'd *love* to see new tutorials in the Basics series. Personally, as a rookie programmer (that loves your tutorials) I found they went from basic to advanced with little to no middle ground. Can't wait!

The lack of a middle ground is on purpose. Once you've got the basics down you're ready for advanced stuff. But nowadays there's more stuff to cover that I consider part of the basics.
