IT & Cycles of Abuse

Hey all, I made a video about IT 3027 which I really loved and thought it well conveyed a lot of the subtext of the story that I just never noticed was there before. Hopefully you dig it.

And here I was saying I prefer the horror styles of things like Gaslight, of all films. Late viewer here, but the whole 'Missing Stair' thing (9ish mins in) is a really important part to discuss (and of course we should talk about the meaning within movies!)

This is fantastic! I am going to see the movie this weekend and I am really glad to watch this first. I stood against the cycle of abuse and raised my kids with love and respect rather than fear and shame. I stood against many generations of abuse the spread through my family like a disease for so many years. Stephen King was the reason I saw it the way I did and decided that the cycle ends with me. King describes the cycle of abuse very clearly in Rose Madder. It is a fight, it is a disease. I look forward to watching this movie and relating what i can. Sorry, for the long message. Thank you, Nyx.

The only thing preventing a perfect score for the new IT is we know it isn't the end of the story. I sat in the theater as they had their farewell scene and thought - "That's great. Is chapter two in the neighboring theater?" / Sorry to hear about the monetization bit with YouTube. I knew you had a Patreon account for some time but that news is what tilted me this way.

I'm confused about the floating thing and why it's so great. Are they trying to say that when you float, you feel nothing and feeling nothing is better than feeling pain? And if the kids already did all this research into the history of Derry and never mentioned it before, how are they going to find out about this magical turtle? Yes, I saw the Legos turtle, but did I miss the explanation for it during the 15 seconds I was thanking my server for bringing me a refill on my soda? Or is this where everyone bullies me into reading the book? Loved your review! <3

A lot of stuff to think about here. IT came out in 1986, which is the year I graduated high school. I remember reading it my freshman year of college, and it resonated with me a lot. The "town doesn't care about bullying" thing, even 30 years ago (and written about a time 30 years before that) was shockingly normal back then. Bullying in the 70s (when I was a kid) and the 80s (when I was starting to be an adult) was considered a shameful thing....for the kids being bullied. You had to be "strong" to avoid being bullied, or else you were a failure. Also to note...Derry, as a town that King writes about, is a very, VERY poor town, and the idea that people just don't leave is ingrained into the Derry mythology. And when people talk about, "Why don't you just leave" (abusers, poverty....to get topical, BAD WEATHER), they don't see the whole picture that poverty traps you in more ways than one. You don't leave an abuser who literally helps keep a roof over your head, and you can't leave a town where everybody you know and supports you even a little bit for somewhere you'd be entirely on your own....yeah, that's part of Derry. People turn a blind eye because to not turn a blind eye means they understand they're complicit, in a lot of ways. Anyway, great analysis!
