Even today, there tends to be a cultural reluctance to discuss such issues openly, and privately, many people still avoid them altogether. Mental healthcare in Japan also continues to have significant room for improvement. This topic hits close to home for me as just a year ago, I lost a close friend who lived in Japan to mental health-related causes. The news came so suddenly. I do think Japanese society is gradually becoming more open to these conversations, but progress remains slow, and it still happens far too quietly.
