A Place to Hide Our Shame
Matt and I were unsatisfied with our makeshift shelving in the... actually, I don't know what to call this part of the house? It's an extension that was added on to the back, sometime around World War II (At least, that's what our realtor told us, I never looked into it). I guess it's kind of part of the kitchen? Except there's no kitchen-y stuff in there, it's just walls and windows- no counters or cabinets or anything. And there's still some vestigial wall nubs left over that marks where the house originally ended, so it's very obvious when you cross from The Kitchen into The Extension.
Anyway, we had stacked two Ikea benches on top of each other to serve as temporary shelving when we moved in during 2013 and then we blinked and seven years had rolled by and we were like "...maybe we should actually make this look marginally better?"
So, we went back to Ikea.
Oh, this whole endeavor took place in January 2020, a mere handful of months before the world went into pandemic lockdown. I always meant to make a write-up about it (the housing project, not the pandemic) but I guess I just operate on a 6-7 year delay in all aspects of my life ¯\(ツ)/¯
So, yeah. We came back with a couple different flatpacks of new furniture and storage containers for various parts of the house. After hours of assembling, we had...
...an actual cabinet for the Kitchen-Extension-y-Area! Oooooh! Aaaahhhhh!
Except.
It was kind of dark.
That nook is very sunny and full of warm colors. The factory default tone of the cabinet kind of created a black hole in that corner of the house, you know?
Well, that's why God gave us paint!
We actually started out using this orange-y color straight out of the can, but when we finished we just weren't totally happy with it, so then we tweaked the leftover paint by hand with some other colors until we got a nice soft cantaloupe-y hue. We liked the contrast of the interior remaining black, so we left the insides as-is!
Aaaaaaaaaaand DONESIES!
Look how much better this looks than our slapdash stacked benches and piles of detritus! Now all the flotsam and jetsam of our life is safely hidden away from polite society behind our cantaloupe-colored cabinet doors.
All our secrets are safely stored away. Nobody knows I live like a trash raccoon in my nest of hoarded debris!

Love it! Currently doing some similar projects that our Mom flew out to help with, because we have a tough time getting a lot of these done too. 🫶🏻
Love the color! And the name! 🧡
Based on your description and what looks like a back door in the photo, I’d call that a mud room!
I came here to suggest mud room or sun porch.
Oh, the final color is pretty!
Oooo love 2 hide trash in furniture! It occurs to me that I haven't seen this upgrade yet, since it was 2019 last time I rolled into that extension!
Also I LOVE that you mixed your own color. My dumdum brain never let me realize that's something you can do with housepaint til last year!
Ain't it cool making stuff with your hands?
now I need like two of these for the room i'm renting....and bookcases. but that's always a given. I call myself a trash panda or trash otter. just because
I'm so glad this had nothing to do with your toys. I would've been shocked if you had any shame over your impressive collection
Oooh that colour is so lovely!
This seems appropriate - https://nathanwpyle.threadless.com/designs/we-own-things/
💯😁
The hoard just seems to grow, doesn't it?
All of this is so satisfying. The transformation, the final paint colours, the knowledge that I am not alone in living with a several year delay in completing stuff I set out to do. It gives me hope ❤️
Same. We moved in 2022 and I still haven’t finished unpacking
Gorgeous! Is that a Hemnes? I recognise those stripes inside the drawer 🤣 Love the colour!
